Fundamentals For Fatherhood

2nd Sunday after Pentecost 2022
With the vocation of fatherhood being so attacked in the world today, it is more important than ever for Catholic fathers to hold fast to the holy principals of their vocation.  True manhood, with its accompanying virtues of perseverance, responsibility, and love of neighbor, is the essential foundation for this vocation.  The father as the head of the family is responsible before all others for, not only the intellectual, but also the spiritual education of his children.  In following the example of the great saintly fathers of Catholic history, men will be able to meet the expectation of this most necessary calling.

Spirit Of The New Law

Pentecost Sunday 2022
Sunday is a day sanctified by God.  From the creations of the angels to the Resurrection of Our Lord, and now the feast of Pentecost, this day has been made holy in a special way.  The Holy Ghost descended upon that small group of disciples to institute the New Law and inspire them to spread the Good News.  They preached for the conversion of thousands of souls and the growth of their own personal holiness.  We continue this mission to this very day.  We must purify our intentions and refuse to be satisfied with anything less than the Greatest Treasure of all, possession of God Himself.

Ite Ad Joseph

Sermon On The
Feast of St. Joseph 2022
Devotion to St. Joseph can be seen in the testimony of St. Teresa, Mary of Agreda and the prophetic words of Isidore of Isolanus.  It flows from his vocation as spouse of the Mother of God which was an essential component of the Incarnation and guarding of Our Lady and the Son of God.  St. Joseph had purity which enabled him to fulfill this role, not only towards the Blessed Virgin but as a virginal father to Christ in imitation of God the Father.  St. Joseph was a pious man who led the Holy Family in their liturgical observances and is the first traditional Catholic.  He often was faced with challenges that tested his virtue, but he relied on God for assistance which always came.  Therefore St. Joseph is patron of all people and walks of life so we can go to him with confidence.

Lent Is A Season Of Joy

Ash Wednesday 2022
Septuagesima season has prepared us for this time of removing sin from our lives.  This should comfort us as we begin this time of penance.  When examining our conscience we should not look at self but at Our Lord crucified to realize the effects of our evil on Him.  Lent is the bond of unity in the Church when we all struggle together. By  Penance we understand different things.  It is the sacrament, a moral virtue and the acts flowing from it.  Ashes are given today because they are one of the three major sacramentals in the Church and remind us powerfully of death which is the consequence of Adam’s sin.  Finally, practical suggestions are given to help us choose and practice spiritual exercises which will make Lent truly beneficial for us.

You Will Die the Death

Septuagesima Sunday 2022
This is the beginning of the Septuagesima season as we transition from the joys of Christmas towards the sorrows of Holy Week and the glories of the Resurrection.  The stational church for today is St. Lawrence outside the Walls which reminds us of the death we inherit from Adam and Eve because of the cemetery that is attached to this church.  The Gloria and Alleluia are dropped from today’s Mass to re-enforce the realization of our fallen state.  Parents should not imitate our first parents in exposing their children to dangers which can destroy God’s life in their souls.

Indirect Charity

5th Sunday After Epiphany 2022
We have many wonderful saints this week and also the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes at the end of the week.  St. Paul in today’s epistle teaches us how to practice love of neighbor through mercy, humility, meekness and kindness.  In the Gospel Our Lord prepares His disciples for the reality that the devil will seek to destroy the spread of the Faith.  Christ teaches patience so that the good will not be uprooted with the evil but that all will be made right at the final judgment.

Charity Lifts To Heaven

4th Sunday After Epiphany 2022
This week we will bless throats in honor of St. Blaise.  The Holy Ghost through St. Paul writes that we should owe no man anything except to love one another.  This endorses living debt free, as much as possible, but it does not include being free of charity which all must practice.  Charity is the greatest of all the virtues, including the other theological ones.  Without charity we are lost. It is the only thing that can make us happy here and in heaven.  The second part of today’s Mass is the reminder that Christ is in complete control of everything and that we must never lose trust in Him.  Finally, we learn about the upcoming feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple.

We Belong In Heaven

3rd Sunday After Epiphany 2022
From the life of St. Raymund of Pennafort we learn that it is never too late to follow a life of holiness.  This Mass reminds us that we do not belong here below but above with God in heaven.  Therefore we should pray always with that intention and separate ourselves from even just thoughts which will plague us on our deathbeds.  Finally, Our Lord stresses the importance of the priesthood in the Gospel when He directs the cured leper to show himself to the priests.  We need good and holy priests and generous vocations.

Hearts May Be Revealed

Sunday After Christmas 2021
St. Paul in the Epistle explains one of the effects of God with us, namely that we in turn become sons of God and can cry out Abba, Father.  We renew our belief in the Incarnation where the Second Person of the Trinity, while retaining His divine nature assumed a human nature.  The Gospel account is taken from the Presentation in the temple where Simeon prophesied that the Christ Child would be a sign of contradiction and that His Mother’s soul would be pierced so that many hearts would be revealed.  The saints after Christmas are examples for us of the generous response to the Holy Babe of Bethlehem.

Abound In Hope

Second Sunday Of Advent 2021
The feasts of Saints Nicholas, Ambrose and Damasus are this week.  It would be good for parents to teach their children about the practices we have during this season like the Advent wreath, Santa Claus and the Christmas tree.  St. Paul in the Epistle reassures us Gentiles, using the prophet Isaias, that we are saved by God’s mercy and we should have hope.  St. John the Baptist sends his remaining faithful followers to Christ so they realize that Our Lord is the Messiah.  The Mass texts foster prayer in us and we should pray always.  We should not succumb to the fear and force that controls our society today but we have a better story about a God who saves by coming as an Infant.  Finally, the story of Our Lady’s intercession to save a soul confirms the adage that Hope Springs Eternal.
