In this conference, the beautiful and consoling teaching of the Church on Indulgences is explained. Beginning with the early Church we see how the treasury of merits won by Christ, His Blessed Mother and the saints was opened for the benefit of sinners. The errors of the Reformation in distorting this doctrine are touched upon and practical steps are given to avail ourselves of Indulgences in our daily lives.
After a brief remark about the great reformer pope, St. Gregory VII, we learn what St. Paul means in his epistle to do all in the name of Jesus. The story of the Magi and the epiphany is explained. Finally, our patronal feastday of the Holy Family is spoken about, especially in light of the 40th anniversary of the founding of our religious community on this day.
In this sermon, we are reminded of the heroic lives of Saints Peter and Paul as the pillars of the Faith. We too must have the great love and generous hearts as they did. Despite the sad situation around us we can change our lives by becoming saints and thereby change the world.
Laetare Sunday
After announcements we learn about St. Thomas Aquinas the angel of purity. After the Epistle and Gospel the significance of the Rose and Laetare is explained. Then the  Easter sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist are described. This Sunday is a foretaste of Easter joys in mid-Lent. The details of the  Miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fishes as sign of institution of Holy Eucharist at the last Supper is given with the citation of St. John Chrysostom about the Blessed Sacrament.
2nd Sunday after Epiphany 2016 St. Vincent was ordained a deacon and was arrested with his bishop under Roman persecution. While imprisoned St. Vincent began preaching to those around him, and even the tortures he endured did nothing to silence him. St. Vincent resisted the slightest compromise. It was only by his continuous prayers that he remained faithful to Our Lord. May we all be as faithful as this great saint.
The theme of the feast of the Epiphany is continued in the text for today’s Mass. St. Paul instructs the converted pagans in Rome to be patient with their neighbors. At the wedding feast of Cana, Our Lord made it clear to His holy Mother that the will of His Father came before every other consideration. The first miracle He performed sanctified marriage in a special way and increased the faith of the Apostles. #20160117K
Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus 2016 St. Telesphorus led the Church as pope soon after it was founded. He is one of the many saints who corroborates the fact that our Church is certainly apostolic. This pope gave us the midnight Mass on Christmas, along with the Gloria chanted at the Mass, and many other practices we have to this day. The star which led the magi was not a natural phenomenon, but clearly a miraculous guide to lead these men to Our Lord. Uttering the Holy Name of Jesus obtains an immediate response from Our Lord. God the Father loves to hear us invoke the Name of His Son. Christ was given this Name at the moment of the circumcision, when He began our redemption by shedding the first drops of His Precious Blood. There is no more lofty prayer than the Name of Jesus. #20160103S
All Saints Day 2015 Today we rejoice because this is the day on which the Church celebrates all her children who have overcome the world. In the process by which a saint is canonized, it must be determined that they expressed nothing contrary to faith and morals, and that they practiced virtue in a heroic way. After this, the Church waits for God to affirm the individual’s sanctity by miracles attributed to their intercession. It is not enough for a Catholic merely to recite the Creed, he must believe it and practice it. For every walk of life, there is a saint who has lived it as an example to follow. Today we adore God as we honor His saints, and desire to make the little sacrifices necessary on our road to holiness. #20151101M
Feast of Christ the King 2015 All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven. We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity. The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives. We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.
Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration. Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations. He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power. Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all. #20151026
Sermon From 20th Sunday After Pentecost 2015 This year marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and her feast is this week. Her quotes show her to be a traditionalist and a teacher of prayer. Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Last week was the feast honoring the Rosary and we are reminded of the importance of this powerful sacramental, what it is and how we should pray it efficaciously. At Fatima the Blessed Mother revealed to the three children on October 13, 1917 when the Miracle of the Sun took place her identity as the Lady of the Rosary. Besides the Rosary she taught them how to offer up their daily little sacrifices in reparation for the sins of the world and for their own sanctification. #20151011M
