Peace And Mercy

18th Sunday After Pentecost 2020

After hearing about the importance of studying the catechism and of praying the Rosary, the Mass for this Sunday was explained.  The Introit prayed for peace and the Collect prayed that mercy would guide our hearts.  This mercy culminates in the beatitude that praises the merciful who practice the virtue of prudence and are guided by the gift of counsel.  Christ demonstrates this in the Gospel account of the cure of the paralytic.  The details are moving and show Our Lord being merciful, forgiving sin and proving it by a miracle.  We should rush often  to the Sacred Heart for forgiveness in the sacrament of penance and receive His peace in Holy Communion.

Keep The First Fervor

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost 2020
After hearing about Saints John Gualbert, Veronica, Bonaventure, Henry, the Carmelite Sisters of Compiegne and Camillus we had a renewal of the Paschal sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist in the Epistle and Gospel.  The Divine Office recounts the story of King David and how his sloth led to sins of adultery and murder.  His meekness saved him when his crimes were exposed by the prophet Nathan.  We should imitate his repentance and reject the devil and all his works.  Receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion faithfully will lead us to union and heaven one day.

Love God With All Your Heart

5th Sunday after Easter 2020
Today is also the feast of St. Paschal Baylon, the patron saint of Eucharistic Congresses because of his extraordinary devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.  Later this week is the fest of St. Rita who is a favorite patron of our community because of her intercession in obtaining the gift of ordination for our priests.  The Epistle today from St. James stresses the importance of doing good works and stands in opposition to the heresy of being saved by faith alone.  We must love God and do so by ridding ourselves of the terrible virus of sin.  The Blessed Virgin Mary is our ally in this and we should be practicing special devotion to her this month.  The Rosary is a perfect means of doing this and the standard prayer that our vocations have in common.

Faith Overcomes The World

Low Sunday 2020
Today is called Low Sunday in comparison to the High Sunday of Easter last week. This Lent was our opportunity to tell God we are sorry for our sins and we resolve to continue having this sorrow throughout our lives.  Faith is the center of our reality and source of our victory.  We are like the apostles in today’s Gospel who receive the consoling words from the Risen Savior, “Peace be to you”.  Repeat the indulgenced words of St. Thomas often, especially at the elevation, “My Lord and My God”.  Live the life of God in our souls now through the Indwelling of the Blessed Trinity.

Patron Of All

Feast Of Saint Joseph 2020
St. Joseph is described as a just man in the Gospel which means he was deeply religious.  His virtues prepared him for his vocation to be the spouse of the Blessed Mother and foster father of the Son of God.  His fears after the Annunciation were about his own worthiness to fulfill his role in so Divine a mission.  The angel reassured St. Joseph and he never wavered in his loving fidelity to duty.  Unlike the Apostles, his job was to protect and to conceal the Savior until His hour had come.  His virginal paternity is a perfect reflection of that of God the Father.  St. Joseph fulfilled his roles as saint, husband, father and worker so that he truly is the patron of all.

Learn As A Catechumen In Lent

2nd Sunday of Lent 2020
Lent is a long retreat for catechumens to prepare for Baptism and for penitents to prepare for Communion. We follow in their footsteps as we learn from each of the Lenten Masses as seen, for example, in this week’s story of Esau and Jacob.  Today’s Epistle stresses God’s holy will that we become saints while the Transfiguration Gospel reaffirms Our Lord’s divinity, especially in preparation for His suffering ahead which will test our faith as it did the apostles.

Love Is Life Or Death

This week is the feast of All Saints which honors God in His heroic examples of sanctifying power.  Today is the feast of Christ the King which was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to combat secularism and to re-assert God’s rights in modern society which have been denied.  Christ is King in His divinity and in His humanity through the grace of union, headship, priesthood and conquest on the Cross.  He established His Church with rights to teach, rule and sanctify.  We pray daily in the Lord’s Prayer “Thy Kingdom Come”.

Love Without Reserve

This Sunday continues the feast of St. Michael and as our statue of him points the way to God so St. Michael has been given to us to protect and to lead us to heaven.  This Mass celebrates the love of the Son of God in coming to earth to save us.  We should love Him in return and this virtue of charity with humility and meekness will help us love our neighbors too.  This month is dedicated to the Holy Rosary and we should honor our heavenly Mother’s request and pray it daily.  It is a contemplative prayer which is powerful for our spiritual life and for the restoration of the Church and the salvation of souls.

Seven Sorrows

We celebrate wonderful saints at this time of the liturgical year.  This week we have the following: St. Francis and his stigmata, St. Joseph Cupertino, St. Januarius and St. Matthew.  The Epistle for this Mass is a lesson on the spiritual life.  Our Lord stresses the importance of seeking this life in union with Him above all other considerations.  Today we also commemorate the Seven Sorrows of our Blessed Mother and her close participation in the sufferings and death of her Divine Son.

That They May Be One

Q&A Conference
The Introit for this Mass states that God is in His holy place and the people dwell there in union of mind.  This unity in Faith is a gift we enjoy and is a fulfillment of Christ’s prayer at the Last Supper when He compared this oneness to that which the Father and Son have.  Our Sacred Heart shrine contains the relic of an early Christian.  This man believed the same Faith and lived according to the same moral life that we profess and follow today.  This relic is our tangible link to the Faith of the Apostles.  The Gospel today reminds us of the ceremonies of Baptism which free us from the evil influences of the devil.
