Fifth Sunday After Easter 2017 – 1st Holy Communion Sunday
St. James in the simple and direct style of his epistle gives practical advice on living a moral life. In the Gospel, Christ reveals the secrets of the Blessed Trinity to His apostles. Also, today the children received their First Holy Communion and they were given their final instruction about Its importance and the effects of the Holy Eucharist in their lives.
The Easter Vigil begins with the Feast of Light in dispelling the darkness of sin. The next part of the ceremony is about Baptism and renewal of vows and finally we have the Mass. The central doctrine of Easter is the Resurrection of Our Lord and His overcoming of evil and death. We renew our Faith and rejoice in Christ’s glorious Resurrection.
After a brief instruction about liturgical and sacred art this sermon tells about the importance of the sacramental of ashes. Stations of the Cross is a Lenten practice beloved by the faithful because our Blessed Mother began the devotion. Catholics must imitate the way of the Cross so they may be joined to Our Lord on it. Finally, the temptations of Christ are explained.
Ash Wednesday 2016 We hear the words of Genesis today that we are dust and unto dust we shall return. The Church tells us these words to help us remain humble. Following the example of Job, even in the midst of troubles and sufferings we must remain docile to God’s will. Practicing penance will avert the punishments of God, but we must have sincere sorrow from the depths of our heart for having offended Him. Fasting, almsgiving, prayer, and spiritual reading, are powerful means of sanctification. However, we should never allow these good works to become a show or hypocritical. God gave us a free will so that we may choose to love Him. This is not a time of sorrow, but one of inner peace and happiness. #20160210K
Feast of the Purification 2016 After childbirth, the Hebrew women were considered ritually unclean because of the shedding of their blood. The Blessed Mother was exempt from all the requirements of the law, because she had not shed blood in her virginal birth and because she had no need for a sin offering. The newborn children were required to be presented to the temple to show that they belonged to God first and were only loaned to their natural parents for a time. This presentation of Our Lord was a portent of that day on which the Virgin Mary would offer her Divine Son on Calvary to God the Father. This feast was celebrated in the most ancient days of the Church in the Holy Land, and was used as a means of combating a pagan celebration of the time. The use of the powerful sacramental of the candle is a testament to our glorious and bloodstained past, when the Mass was offered by candlelight in the catacombs. #20160202
Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men. In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us. We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell. Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them. If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God. #20151102
21st Sunday after Pentecost 2015 Most of us can think of a time during our life when we were slow to forgive one who asked for forgiveness. The terrible crime of refusing forgiveness to those who sincerely ask for it is in direct contradiction to the Our Father, in which we ask that God forgive our trespasses as we forgive others. Spiritual reading and the Holy Rosary are powerful weapons against the devil, as well as some of the greatest aids to living a true Christian life. Every Catholic should be familiar with the 15 promises that the Blessed Mother made to those who devoutly pray the Rosary. #20151018K
Sermon From 20th Sunday After Pentecost 2015 This year marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and her feast is this week. Her quotes show her to be a traditionalist and a teacher of prayer. Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Last week was the feast honoring the Rosary and we are reminded of the importance of this powerful sacramental, what it is and how we should pray it efficaciously. At Fatima the Blessed Mother revealed to the three children on October 13, 1917 when the Miracle of the Sun took place her identity as the Lady of the Rosary. Besides the Rosary she taught them how to offer up their daily little sacrifices in reparation for the sins of the world and for their own sanctification. #20151011M
1st Friday Conference October 2015 So many Catholics desire a greater understanding of the Mass. The Consecration of the Mass is surrounded by rituals and rubrics that are filled with meaning. When you appreciate the meaning of these rubrics you see the true beauty of the Mass and the great evil of those who would wish to destroy it. There is no dogma of the Faith which teaches infallibly the doctrine of Guardian Angels, however, the evidence from Scripture and Tradition is so overwhelming that it is considered infallible. When Christ speaks of the angels watching over the “little ones,” He is not speaking only of children but of all who are innocent. Our Guardian Angels preserve us from dangers to our body and soul, as well as temptations from the evil spirit. They inspire holy thoughts and aid us in performing virtuous acts. From the testimonies of many saints, we know that our angels never tire of being with us all day long and watching over us at every moment. #20151002
17th Sunday after Pentecost 2015 There was only one religion started by Our Lord, and we should never be swayed to think otherwise. Centuries ago, when devotion to the Holy Rosary had begun to decrease, a terrible plague was sent throughout Europe as a chastisement. The Blessed Mother and Our Lord appeared to Blessed Alan de la Roche and instructed him to promote the Rosary through his preaching. By his efforts, this devotion was restored. In our own day the Holy Rosary is often ignored or suppressed. We should be on fire for the defense of Our Lord and His Mother and use the Holy Rosary as a prayer of penance to make up for the sins of mankind. #20150920K
