Be Inspired

Ash Wednesday 2019
From ancient times ashes have been used, even by the pagans, for the practice of penance.  The Church has done so also and extended their use to all, not just the public penitents.  This sacramental at the beginning of Lent reminds us of the words to Adam after his fall that we are dust and unto dust we shall return.  The graces today should inspire us to renounce the pride and arrogance inherited from Adam and draw close to Our Lord as the saints have told us and finally to realize that in the end we will be judged by love alone.

Love Rules All

4th Sunday After Epiphany 2019

In the Epistle for the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany St. Paul teaches that charity must be part of the fulfillment of all the commandments and not a license to commit sin.  We must do our part and fight against evil.  We need to ask for forgiveness, renounce our sins and cry to Our Lord with the apostles “Save us, Lord!”

Our Presentation

Feast Of The Purification 2019

The feast of the Purification also celebrates Our Lord’s Presentation in the Temple. The Mosaic law required a mother to offer sacrifices before she could be allowed again to participate in worship. In addition, it stipulated that a first born son should be offered to God Who would then return him to the parents for raising him. The Blessed Mother and her Divine Son were exempt from these requirements because of Their sinlessness and holiness but They showed us the way of humility today. We must imitate Them in offering ourselves to God.

End Of The Year Warning

Last Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Last Sunday after Pentecost is a reminder not to be a lover of this world nor compromise with it.  The Gospel gives signs of the last days which are meant to warn us.  Also, the importance of sacramentals, especially the Rosary and the Miraculous Medals, is explained because of the feast of St. Catherine Laboure this week.

The Promise Of The Rosary

20th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
After a brief explanation of sacramentals, the importance of catechism and an exposition on the Epistle and Gospel for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost we learn about the Holy Rosary.  Our Lady used St. Dominic to propagate this highly indulgenced prayer that has its origins with the monastic brothers.  It has been the means of combatting heresy and anti-Christian armies.  It is our tie to the Liturgy and the means of overcoming all the problems facing us because of modern society.

Do Not Be Distracted

Palm Sunday 2018
Palm Sunday is an encapsulation of all of Holy Week as the triumph of the Resurrection is seen with the entry of Our Lord into the Holy City and the sacrifice of the Cross in the Passion.  We must not waste this week nor be distracted.  We can win souls to Christ by imitating the virtues Jesus showed on this day: humility, meekness and obedience.

Unto Dust You Shall Return

Ash Wednesday Evening 2018
Blessed ashes remind us of death and our own nothingness.  These marked the public sinners from the early days of the Church and do for all of us now.  No sins are too much to be forgiven and penance and fasting are powerful means to save us as they did for the Ninivites.  The Epistle calls all to join the priest in doing penance. We should never betray God for any momentary sin.  Love of God dispels sin and vice from our hearts.  We should pray for devotion and sorrow during Lent so Easter will be a preview of the life to come.

God Will Hear Us

Ash Wednesday 2018
In 1741 the pope declared that Lent is the true sign of the Christian fighting for his salvation by means of penance through fasting which is understood by the receiving of the sacramental of ashes today.  The entire Septuagesima season focused our attention on sin and our identifying the predominant fault we want to eradicate now.  We begin our forty days of prayers, almsgiving and fasting with confidence that God will hear our plea and forgive us as He did with the Ninivites at the preaching of the prophet Jonas.

Blessing of St. Blaise

Feast Of St. Blaise 2018
St. Blaise was an early martyr bishop whose intercessory power was well-known especially by two famous miracles.  The elements of these divine favors are what make up the blessing of throats on his feastday.  The spiritual benefits from this sacramental are increased by our devout reception of this blessing.

Sacrament Sunday

6th Sunday after Pentecost 2017

After learning about the saints this week, particularly St. Mary Magdalen, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the brown scapular were explained.  This Sunday’s Mass is concerned with the Easter Sacraments of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist which are the thoughts found in the Epistle and Gospel.  The Blessed Sacrament will strengthen us throughout life and we must always pray that we be preserved from a sudden and unprovided death in the end.
