It Is Not Easy

The Epistle tells us that if we are to put our efforts into anything it should be something that really matters.  Not for the perishable rewards given in sports but for the eternal reward of Heaven.  These three Sundays are for an examination of conscience.  We should be asking during these days what we have done in our life that has truly mattered.  It is not easy to be a Catholic, because it means we will have enemies in this life.  The opinions of men do not affect our eternity.  It does not matter how we begin our life, but how we end it.  We must live with distrust of self and knowledge of our dependence on God.

Mass Of Loyalty

This month is dedicated to the Holy Rosary and this sacramental is so powerful that just carrying it is important and beneficial.  The Rosary is a contemplative prayer which is adaptable to communal recitation that can be difficult for some, especially children.  The Introit tells us that God will save us and we must resist the devil.  The Gospel about the marriage feast parallels Christ’s life and stresses the importance of having grace in order to participate in the Sacred Banquet.  Loyalty is being faithful to God, His Church and the Faith.  It continues its influence into our families and friends.  Parents have the responsibility to teach this to their children so that they inculcate this virtue into all their relationships in life.

The Summary of Holy Week

In the liturgy of Palm Sunday we are shown by Holy Mother Church the summary of the entire Holy Week.  Christ allowed Himself to be given regal praise this day, and we continue that celebration in the blessing and distribution of palms, which are a sign of victory.  The ancient practice of the Church in Jerusalem is repeated now in the triumphant procession.  Heaven is our goal, and we are called to follow Our Lord in all humility, so that we may have a part in that final procession when the souls of the just join their heavenly King.

Penitential Mercy

Although many outside the Faith look askance at the penances Catholics perform, they are unable to explain the meaning of Christ’s words, “unless you do penance you will perish.”  We have great attachments to our vices, and it is only through grace and penance that we can learn truly to hate our sins.  The season of Lent is a time of mercy.  We receive this mercy through confessing our sins and receiving the sacraments.  We must pray the Confiteor and beg God to help us, with a true conviction of amending our lives.

A Heart of Virtue

We must remember that, in addition to the frequent reception of the sacraments, we should make use of the sacramentals of the Church. The blessed candle is one of the greatest sacramentals because it is a symbol of Christ, the Light of the World. Votive candles which are lit in the chapel represent our prayer even after we leave.

There are many lessons taught by the readings of this Mass. St. Paul tells us to put on a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. The practice of these virtues will bring us directly to Heaven when we die. Humility is particularly effective in overcoming sins of the flesh. It is only through these virtues and the love of God that we will have true peace.

The Gift of Our Chapel

We should pray to the saints as if they are real people, not simply images.  The dedication of the Church of Our Savior in Rome, which is the “mother and head” of all churches throughout the world, has been the residence of the popes.  A mosaic in this Church commemorates the apparition of Our Lord which took place during the consecration ceremony.  All other churches are considered Catholic because they are an extension of this Church in Rome.  The cruciform structure of every church reflects the God-centered purpose of our religion, while the altar facing the East demonstrates that the church is not for the people first, but for the worship of God.  A priest should enter the church trembling, knowing that he enters the courts of Heaven.  Traditionally, the doors to the church represented the Trinity, with a carving over the main door depicting Christ in judgment.  It is only after passing through His judgment that we will enter our heavenly abode.

What Sets Catholics Apart?

Good Catholics are set apart from the rest of the world, not only because of their modesty and humility, but especially because they render good for the evils they have received.  If we want God to hear our prayers we must avoid evil and do good, pursuing peace with others.  Catholics are called to do the opposite of what the world commands.  When non-Catholics witness actions which are above the natural order, they recognize the source of those good actions could only be God Himself.  Our Lord has given us the true interpretation of God’s Law, which had been perverted by the religious leaders of His time.  We should ask God to help us understand how to follow Him in this life and to understand better the joy of the life to come.

Why God Permits Suffering

Today is also Father’s Day.  This vocation is attacked in our society and only adds to the suffering and sacrifices that fathers must endure for the sake of their families but God always hears their prayers and heaven awaits them.  The Black Forest fires that have been destroying many homes in our area have even threatened us but God has preserved us.  We have many spiritual helps to protect us and all are welcome here in case of danger.  Things like this make people wonder how evils exist in a world created by our heavenly Father Who saw that all was good.  Non-Catholics are at a loss to answer such questions and some conclude that God cannot exist.  We know that there are many reasons why we suffer and imitating Our Lord on the cross and winning eternal glory is certainly one of them.

Aid on Our Journey to Heaven

All that Our Lord won for us on Calvary – the justification, divine life, and divine assistance He merited – could not be given to us until He rose from the dead.  The wounds He still has on His body are like channels of grace.  We are united to our living Redeemer in Heaven.  Through the signs of the liturgy, all the gifts of Heaven are brought down and applied to each of us.  One of the first gifts we are given is faith.  The Light of the World illumines our souls in the midst of the darkness of the devil.  If we are true followers of Christ, we do not walk in darkness but have the light of life.  This truth is represented by the powerful sacramental of the Paschal Candle.  As the Hebrews followed the Pillar of Fire through the desert to the Promised Land, we follow Christ through all the trouble and bitterness of our lives.  We sing a hymn of joy, because, through our faith, all our trials only increase our happiness.  We are ready to recommit ourselves to the promises we made in baptism.  Now we are prepared to enter the gates of Heaven which have been opened to us.

The Liturgy of Heaven

It is important that we be fervent and attentive during Holy Week.  We do ourselves great harm by not entering into these moments with our hearts and minds.  The world will pass away and mean nothing, but what happens in the liturgy has consequences for all eternity.  We have been given a dignity beyond all comprehension.  God needed nothing outside Himself to be perfectly happy but, in His divine plan, God desired to have His Incarnate Son give Him infinite, external glory.  We join in this infinite glory because we are members of Christ’s Mystical Body.  Today we are united with this moment in Christ life by participating in this liturgy, and we look forward to the ultimate triumph of our King and our procession into the heavenly Jerusalem.  As defeated as Our Lord appears in the world today, this will be as nothing compared to the glory of His coming kingship.
