Faith: The Beginning of Heaven

Our Lord worked the miracle recounted in the Gospel because of the strong faith of the men who brought the paralytic to Him.  We are only capable of doing evil by our own power, but all the good we do is because of the help of God’s grace.  The Church has taught for 2,000 years without error.  Through this we see the truth of St. Paul’s rhetorical question, “what grace are you lacking?”  Christ came to bring us to Heaven.  And our faith, when it is enlivened by charity, allows us to begin to experience Heaven while we are still on earth.

Restoration Through The Rosary

There was only one religion started by Our Lord, and we should never be swayed to think otherwise.  Centuries ago, when devotion to the Holy Rosary had begun to decrease, a terrible plague was sent throughout Europe as a chastisement.  The Blessed Mother and Our Lord appeared to Blessed Alan de la Roche and instructed him to promote the Rosary through his preaching.  By his efforts, this devotion was restored.  In our own day the Holy Rosary is often ignored or suppressed.  We should be on fire for the defense of Our Lord and His Mother and use the Holy Rosary as a prayer of penance to make up for the sins of mankind.

The Secret To Sanctity

When Our Lord raised the son of the widow of Naim to life, the miracle was instantaneous, with the child restored as if he were simply waking from sleep.  As Christians we know that all suffering is sent for a reason, and sometimes the greatest joys come from times of sorrow.

The Epistle for this Mass speaks about fraternal correction, a teaching so often misunderstood by Catholics.  Remember Our Lord describes himself as meek and humble of heart.  The virtue of meekness is related to clemency, which gives us the ability to forgive easily insults.  A man who is humble recognizes what he is of himself.  This is what made the saints lowly as the dust.  Pride is the most deceptive of all vices, even disguising itself as humility.  We should be well instructed about this vice so we may recognize it better and more effectively uproot it from our souls.

What Is Promised Through Her

Feast of the Assumption 2015

This Gospel recalls the mystery of the Visitation, in which we see Elizabeth as an old woman humbling herself before the young Virgin Mary.  A momentary gift of reason was given to the infant, St. John the Baptist, in the womb of his mother when he received the revelation that he was in the presence of the Redeemer.  On that day the Blessed Virgin was recognized for the first time as the Mother of God.

The Dogma of the Assumption was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in modern times, but it was held, from the earliest days of the Church, that those who dared to question this dogma were enemies of God.  Even the saints are looking forward to that final day when their souls will be united with their bodies in Heaven.  This feast is a proclamation of that future day on which we will feel for the first time the embrace of our Blessed Mother.

The Divine Power Of Faith

The body of doctrines that all Catholics must believe is called Objective Faith, which is distinct from the virtue of faith.  This virtue gives us the ability to ascent with the mind and adhere with the will to all the truths revealed by our Divine Savior.  We do not appreciate the great privilege we have been given through faith.  It is an act of the greatest love of God for Him to share the mysteries of His life so that we might believe in them.  The gift of faith is offered to even the worst among us.  The Gospel today displays the great power of intercession, because it was due to the friends of the deaf and dumb man that he obtained his cure.  This teaches us to pray perseveringly for the conversion of our neighbor.

Love Him In Return

Feast of the Sacred Heart 2015
“To have Christ dwelling through faith in your heart” refers to the abiding presence of the Divine Person of Christ in our souls while in the state of grace.  When St. Paul speaks of knowing God’s love, he does not simply refer to an intellectual knowledge, but rather a direct, immediate experience of the love of God, just as the great saints experienced.  This feast of the Sacred Heart was requested directly by Our Lord, and no man is free to ignore this devotion.  The original sketch of the Sacred Heart shows a great wound inside of which is written the word “caritas” – “love”.  This devotion was reserved for a time when the world had grown cold in its love that it might gain favor through the revelation of Our Lord’s Sacred Heart.

The Food of Christian Souls

There have been innumerable Eucharistic miracles throughout the history of the Church.  In this greatest of all the sacraments, Our Lord is contained, offered, and received.  The priest speaks in the person of Christ when he says, “This is My Body.”  After transubstantiation takes place, the priest holds in his hand the Author of Creation.  We should look at the Host at the elevation and adore our God.  Christ desired to come in the manner of food because He wished to be united with us in such a way that it is as if we are essentially one.  Although Christ is alive, He comes to us in the state of death.  Sacramentally there is renewed Christ’s sacrifice in the Holy Eucharist, so our sufferings may be identified with His.

Convert All Nations

The dogma of the Ascension of Our Lord is the only dogma to be proclaimed by the angels.  The Scriptures were written by practical men who desired proofs to support their belief.  We review the story of the Ascension to increase our understanding and to love it better.  The souls of the just were waiting in patient expectation of this day.  Following the divine command, the Apostles traveled far and wide to convert the world.  Only the Catholic Church has produced all the great saints and the miracles to confirm their teaching.  This day Christ ended His visible mission on earth and will soon send the Holy Ghost.

The Lasting Joy of Faith

Today’s Epistle tells us of the importance of good example.  Many more conversions are made by good example than by preaching.  The “little while” during which the disciples would not see Christ described His passion, death, and descent into limbo.  The disciples were so attached to Our Lord that it was like death for them to be separated from Him.  After this “little while” in the tomb Christ predicted that He would rise again and would be seen by His followers once more.  Faith is a supernatural power that permits us to ascent with the mind and embrace with the will everything God has revealed, simply because He says so.  The fact of the Resurrection gives assurance to our faith and fills us with lasting joy.

The Sun of Justice Rises

We call this day Sunday because the early English-speaking Christians kept the pagan name of the day to honor the “Sun of Justice” Who has risen.  This is common practice of Catholicism, to Christianize every culture.  Easter Sunday is the day of the Light of the Sun of Justice.  We are more sons of God then even sons of our parents.  Because we have a share in God’s life, our only desire should be to obtain Heaven. Our three infallible Witnesses are in Heaven Who give testimony of the truth that Christ is both God and man.
