The Introit of this Mass reminds us that we suffer because of the misfortunes of life and we can avoid this by behaving and practicing virtue. The Gospel teaches the importance of believing in order to gain favors, even miracles, from God. Finally, we have been given guardian angels and we should love these closest friends and have devotion to them.

With the battle cry “Who is like unto God?” the great archangel, St. Michael, defended the honor of God and won forever his name. This ancient feast recalls the dedications of a couple of famous churches where St. Michael is venerated. It also celebrates all the heavenly spirits who lead us in worship and prayer while watching over the whole created cosmos and each of us. Ask for the intercession of St. Michael and all the angels that we become devout and one day see them in heaven.

The life of St. Mary Magdalen is a perfect example of the serenity that comes to anyone who converts from sin and begins to love God above all else. The Act of Contrition is our way of imitating this holy penitent.  St. Camillus is another case of a beautiful conversion which led him to express his love of God through heroic care for the sick and dying. Finally, this sermon gives several practical ways of living a spiritual life in today’s world. It explains the difference between temptation and sin and how to deal with both. Discerning God’s Will for us requires prayer, reflection and counsel.

Today’s sermon refers to the Epistle of St. James from the Fifth Sunday after Easter in order to caution us not to be overbearing in our relations with others, especially in matters pertaining to the Faith. Â With reference to the prayers of the Mass for St. Joseph the Worker, we learn of the great virtues of the man chosen by God to be the foster-father of Jesus. Â Although not His biological father, Joseph was a true father to Jesus in every sense of the word and a model for all fathers. Â Because of his great virtues, he is called Patron of the Universal Church and even today works for our salvation. Â The admonition: “Ite Ad Joseph” is a good one for us to follow, especially in these times.
