Signs Of Demonic Temptation

Tomorrow is the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist and today is the feast of St. Margaret Mary the Apostle of the Sacred Heart.  The Epistle for this Mass was written by St. Paul during his imprisonment and the armor of his jailers was a reminder to him of the defensive and offensive weapons that we have in our spiritual combat, not with natural forces but, with preternatural forces on high.  Lucifer is the leader of these proud fallen demons who are the cause of most of our temptations.  Sudden, disturbing, prideful, lying and divisive characteristics mark these attacks from the devil.  The Gospel warns us to be merciful because we have received mercy.  The Divine Maternity has an important attribute that honors Our Lady’s virginity before, during and after Christ’s birth.  The Holy Rosary is our great means of sanctification.

God Is The Solution

It is important not to waste time especially with today’s technology which causes many distractions.  It is more common now for people to be depressed, sad and lonely more than at other times in the past.  This is because they are not looking to God and the Blessed Mother.  Especially during this month, we should turn to the Holy Rosary which has many consoling promises attached to its recitation.  We should frequent the sacraments like Penance after making an examination of conscience and we should attend Mass with reverence and attention.

Saint Pius X, Our Pope

This conference begins with a sobering account of the current problems with the validity of the sacraments because of the devil’s hatred of priests and the means of salvation.  The story of today’s Saint Remy is encouraging in the face of this new paganism because this holy bishop baptized Clovis which began the life of the eldest daughter of the Church – France.  This month is dedicated to the Holy Rosary and quotations about it from the saints encourage us to pray it devoutly.  Finally, we recall our holy pope, St. Pius X, who enriched the Church and souls during his papacy.  His love for God and neighbor was evident in his efforts to preserve the Faith pure and undefiled, to honor Our Lady as Co-Redemptrix, to emphasize the Liturgy, increase devotion to the Holy Eucharist, increase study of the Bible, restore Gregorian chant, revise the Code of Canon Law, reform the Breviary and much more.  His sanctity was attested by conversions and miracles during his lifetime and during this canonization process.  He is our strong protector and supporter today against the evil of modernism.

Humility And Love Are Related

Today also commemorates the feast of the Holy Name of Mary which was moved to September 12th because of the miraculous victory of the Christians in saving Europe from the Turks in 1683.  Invoking Our Lady’s name is a powerful aid to our spiritual combat as well.  Today’s Mass begins with a reminder of the importance of prayer in obtaining God’s assistance.  Without God we cannot be saved.  The Epistle is a call to holiness, prayer and charity.  Does not the countless number of children saints show we all can be saints too?  The Gospel teaches a wise lesson that has eternal implications as well.  Love will lead us to humility and together assure us of being exalted with a higher place in heaven.

All profession days are beautiful moments for our religious communities and for the people.  Today is also unique and reminiscent of Jesus’ words about St. Paul at his conversion, “I will teach him to suffer for My Name”.   This joyful day is also a pure and perfect sacrifice in union with Our Lord on the Cross.  The means of this oblation are the evangelical vows of poverty, chastity and obedience that were professed this morning before Mass.  These are counsels from the Gospel which are for those called to embrace them and who are generous in doing so.  All the baptized must live the spirit of the vows but religious practice them.  Now begins the work of living the interior life deeply and thereby becoming a fruitful spouse of Christ.  There is much to learn about the theological virtues and the vows but the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Mother will be your guides.  Be stout-hearted because the Lord is your light and salvation  and He will never forget you.

Immaculate Heart Conference

This First Friday comes during Our Lady’s Thirty Days which begin with the Assumption and end with the feast of the Seven Sorrows.  There are many feasts related to our Blessed Mother during these days.  The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and this devotion has a long history in the Church.  Many saints propagated it through the centuries and there are many stories about its efficacy such as the Miraculous Medal and Our Lady of Victories.  The purpose of the devotion is to honor the physical heart of the Blessed Mother and her love for the Blessed Trinity.  It is accomplished by veneration, confidence, compassion and reparation.

Daily Examen

This Sunday continues the theme of humility that we saw last week.  St. Paul in the Epistle especially points out what we are like on our own merits and what we can become with God’s grace.  True humility is seeing ourselves as we are before God.  In the spiritual life this is done by the daily examen through which we discover our faults and then we can concentrate on our predominate one by practicing the opposite virtues to destroy and replace that vice.  We prioritize our time and make sure we examine our consciences daily.

Humility And Sanctity

10th Sunday After Pentecost 2021
This is Humility Sunday.  Our Lord in the Gospel states clearly that he who humbles himself will be exalted.  It is the fundamental virtue for holiness.  The Epistle lists the charismatic graces that were so prevalent in the days of persecution because the early Christians needed these helps in facing martyrdom.  As the Church came out of the catacombs it was already fully developed as could be seen at the Council of Nicea.  From the beginning the Resurrection was preached and sanctity was evident in the lives of the faithful.  We can do the same but we must pray.  Saints Oswald and Dominic are wonderful examples for us and their feasts are this week.

Take Heed Lest You Fall

9th Sunday After Pentecost 2021
This week we celebrate the feasts of Saints James the Greater, Martha, Ignatius of Loyola and the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Anne.  This Sunday is providentially placed in the summer to help us combat temptation and sin.  The Epistle warns us how easily we can fall from grace as can be seen by what happened to the Chosen People in the desert.  History provides many more examples such as King Henry VIII.  God permits evil as a punishment for sin and to teach us to turn to Him when in need.  Even those far from grace can do this and in a moment of desperation say “God, help me”.  Pray fervently that you may go to heaven and you will.
