This Sunday continues the renewal of the Paschal mystery with the account from St. Paul’s epistle of the several appearances of the Risen Lord before His Ascension – one to over 500 people.  The Gospel about the cure of the deaf mute is so impressive that it has been incorporated into the ceremonies surrounding one of the Paschal sacraments, namely, Baptism.  Yet, this miraculous cure pales in comparison with the Consecration at today’s Mass.

The Prayer Of The Proud Man

Today’s Gospel contrasts the prayer of the Pharisee and the Publican.  The proud Pharisee thanks God for making him better than everyone else, especially the Publican.  We should compare ourselves to the best so as not to be complacent and even foster our own humility at the same time.  Humility of will is that virtue by which we not only realize our need for humiliation but enjoy it.  We learn this in the lives of the saints like St. Peter.  This holiness of the saints is one of the ways, along with Christ’s miracles like the Resurrection, to find proofs that Catholicism is the True Church.

After the Epistle and Gospel, Father spoke about the care he received the last few weeks and his attendance at Mass and how much it is centered on God.  Then he spoke about today’s feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori who is the patron of moral theologians and who propagated the system of probabilism through his newly founded congregation and its priest members.  St. Alphonsus’ father opposed his vocation to the priesthood until he heard his son’s first sermon and then he approached him in sorrow and repentance for causing him difficulty in pursuing it.  St. Alphonsus wrote many devotional works, was the instrument of miracles and the example for other saints like St. Gerard Majella.

In the Gospel Christ condemns unjust anger and asks us to love our enemies.  Will we shirk this duty as a soldier who refuses to go into battle?  In the Epistle St. Peter writes that we should be merciful and in return we will receive mercy.

Feast Of The Sacred Heart 2020
Love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus must be part of everyone’s life, especially the consecrated who are baptized, confirmed or ordained.  The reason for this is that His Human Heart belongs to God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, and contains those mysteries that St. Paul alludes to in today’s Epistle.  The Mass texts for today tell us more about the Heart of Jesus as revealed starting with the opening of It on the Cross.  Private apparitions to St. Margaret Mary gave the impetus for spreading this devotion and the popes have encouraged it throughout the centuries.  Many benefits accrue to us by practicing this love and one is the peace and rest that comes to our own heart and soul by learning to be meek and humble like Our Lord.

We Rest In His Hand

Among the themes of the time after Pentecost which we are beginning is the assurance given us by Divine Providence.  No matter the crisis we face God is always with us and never tests us beyond our strength.  The Holy Ghost reminds us of this through the sacred liturgy which celebrates feasts of consolation like the Holy Trinity, Corpus Christi and Sacred Heart.  Today’s Mass provides us with the same confidence and in the Gospel which describes sufficient and efficacious grace we are cautioned not to allow the concupiscence of the eyes, the flesh and the pride of life to deflect us in our journey towards God and heaven.

The Intimate Love Of God

Good Shepherd Sunday 2020
The beautiful expanded account of the Gospel of the Good Shepherd is comforting and consoling.  We are free from fear and death.  As Catholics we do not simply submit to our demise as the animals do but we embrace it as Our Savior did.  A plenary indulgence is attached to such a heroic death. Christ suffered terribly to save us and speaks lovingly to us as our Shepherd.  His love will not permit anything truly evil to touch us.  Any cross He allows us the privilege to carry will bring us to a happier future.

Faith Overcomes The World

Today is called Low Sunday in comparison to the High Sunday of Easter last week. This Lent was our opportunity to tell God we are sorry for our sins and we resolve to continue having this sorrow throughout our lives.  Faith is the center of our reality and source of our victory.  We are like the apostles in today’s Gospel who receive the consoling words from the Risen Savior, “Peace be to you”.  Repeat the indulgenced words of St. Thomas often, especially at the elevation, “My Lord and My God”.  Live the life of God in our souls now through the Indwelling of the Blessed Trinity.

Jesus, Come To Me, Embrace Me

While unable to attend Mass, we must be more devout at home, especially by practicing spiritual communion.  The Indwelling of the Blessed Trinity and the action of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost in our souls will inspire us.  That type of inspiration is what moved the people in Jerusalem to proclaim Our Lord King today; although they cried for His death less than a week later. The palm is a sign of victory and why it was used to welcome Christ into the Holy City.  It is a pledge of our victory today.

Deliver Us, O Lord

Passion Sunday 2020
The last two weeks of Lent are the most sacred and have a special name, Passiontide.  In today’s Gospel, Our Lord proclaimed His Divinity with the result that He had to hide from those who wanted to stone Him.  The Church incorporates this into Passiontide by hiding Christ and all the reminders of Him by veiling the Crucifix and statues.  This year it is more dramatic because many are unable to even come to the chapel.  Given these circumstances we should unite more than ever with the texts of this Mass and cry out for deliverance.  We should practice prayer, especially the Rosary, and all the exercises of the spiritual life with renewed purpose so as to strengthen ourselves, with God’s grace, during this present crisis and for the future.
