First Sunday of Lent 2020
This sermon begins with a review of the Lenten regulations and a recalling of the life and the struggle for his vocation of St. Thomas Aquinas, whose feast is this week.  Then we learn about the sacramental of ashes which is a powerful aid during this season which offers us more graces than at any other time during the year.  With this help we perform supernatural works which overcome everything that separates us from God.  After His forty days of fasting in the desert, Our Lord showed us how to defeat the devil and his temptations.  We are meant to follow Christ’s example.

Child Of Grace

The Epistle for today teaches the importance of the supernatural virtue of charity which is not to be confused with natural human kindness.  Charity not only enables us to love God and neighbor but it gives us knowledge beyond the highest attainable during our earthly lives.  Today was also the clothing day for one of our seminarians and the sermon continued on the topic of a vocation to the priesthood and religious life.  The importance of grace as a necessity for supernatural endeavors was explained.  The following qualities are essential during the future preparation for service to the Church: perseverance, trust in God, distrust of self, dedication and strength in adversity.  All of these will aided by the sacramental of the religious habit.

The Happiest People

Remnants of a dedication Mass are part of the Propers for today.  We seek peace and happiness in God’s House and we pray for these whenever we come to church.  The Collect and Epistle speak of the gift of grace which comes to us from the altar.  The Gospel shows the Divinity of Christ and how the grace of the sacraments, like Penance, heals our souls.  Also, this week is the feast of St. Teresa of Avila and it reminds us of the beauty of vocations to the Carmelite life.  The Sisters enjoy a happiness with Our Lord that is above any worldly considerations.

Zeal

Wednesday in the 2nd Week in Lent (Brother’s clothing day)

On the occasion of a novice’s clothing in the religious habit, we learn about zeal in the hearts of those consecrating themselves to God.  Postulancy has been a test and now the novitiate is the time to learn more about the spiritual life.  Distrust of self and confidence in God will aid us along this path.  The religious habit teaches death to the world, purity, obedience, prayer and service.

Why did Christ choose to be the Son of a worker?  St. Joseph’s vocation represents someone who changes the world, because in using the materials of the world he symbolically transforms it.  A Catholic should be familiar with the definition of Capitalism, Social Darwinism, Prosperity Theology, Fascism, Socialism, Marxism, and Existentialism.  The true Christian view stands opposed to these philosophies, because it teaches that man is judged not simply by his work but by the quality of his character.  Even small works have value if they are done with great love for God.  “Whatever you do in word or work, do all in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Instruction to the Married Couple

The wedding day is particularly important for the wife, because this union provides the security and protection for her and her future children.  She, representing the whole Mystical Body, surrenders herself to the husband who is supposed to be the living representative of Our Lord through the love he provides.  A marriage only works when both parties will it to work.  All the sacraments are forms of worship as they are united to Christ’s redemptive sacrifice.  Matrimony is a participation of the fruitful love of Christ from the Cross.  The married couple are called to be the extension of God’s love, as they produce saints to propagate the kingdom of Heaven.

The Father of Vocations

Feast of Saint Joseph 2015
When a person is given a vocation, he is always given the divine help necessary to reach his final goal of Heaven.  Even the people who miss their divine calling are given sufficient grace to save their souls.  Many people, especially in our days, lack confidence in God and are too afraid to fulfill their great calling in life.  St. Joseph was called to be the spouse of the Mother of God and the earthly representative of God the Father.  This was a vocation which was truly beyond human ability to fulfill.  The only doubts St. Joseph entertained were doubts about his own judgment.  He recognized his poverty in every way, but was filled with confidence in God.  Like the priest, St. Joseph had custody over the Body of the Son of God and was willing to lay down his life to protect Him.  The patron of all our needs is St. Joseph.

His Hidden Life

Children belong to God, and it is the responsibility of the parents to instill the principles and values necessary to live in the world.  Children must remember that their parents are people, not simply objects fulfilling a role in their lives.  In all the years of Christ’s private life no one knew He was the Son of God.  This speaks volumes about His humility. “I must be about my Father’s affairs,” means that fidelity to God comes before natural attachments, and even obedience to parents.  Christ’s hidden life was spent in love and obedience, and by this Christ demonstrated that the life of prayer and meditation is far superior to the active life.

Priestly Life: Human and Divine

To teach, rule, and sanctify are the three powers priests must employ to accomplish their purpose on earth.  Through preaching the priest shares the fruits of all he knows.  In ruling the priest is able to organize society according to the principals of the Church.  By sanctifying the priest makes the people truly holy.  The priest is called “Father,” because he gives life by healing and restoring the faithful.  The priest should offer all, especially the Mass, for the remission of sins.  God chose men, not angels, to be priests, because men know sin and can offer compassion to their fellow sinners.  But despite knowing sin, no one on earth has a greater obligation to perfection than the priest.  Priests belong entirely to Christ and must possess His mind and will.

The Veiling Ceremony

This week we have the feasts of St. Mary Magdalen, St. James the Greater and St. Anne.  This Mass repeats Holy Week for us and its sacraments of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.  Today is also the veiling day for one of the Carmelite Sisters which is rare in our world.  The veil is the sign of consecration to Our Lord as the true Spouse of souls and the reserving of the look of the countenance to Him alone.  Do not deny Jesus anything because no amount of generosity on our part can outdo that of the Savior.  All the elements of this beautiful ceremony express the joy, peace, sacrifice and eternal reward that a contemplative vocation embodies.
