The Virgin Mary’s life had many sorrows, but we limit them to the seven major sorrows of her life.  We should recall each of these seven sorrows today, remembering especially the greatest of them all – when the Blessed Mother stood at the foot of the cross.  The image of the Sorrowful Mother in our chapel holds a very special significance.  This image has become a source of great grace and consolation to many who have seen it.  People know instinctively where to go when they are in trouble – they go to their loving Mother.

The Battle Of Saint Pius X

Pope Saint Pius X only reigned for eleven years but his contributions to the Church are unparalleled in modern times.  He took the name Pius because the past popes who possessed that name suffered for Christ as great defenders of Catholic doctrine.  As soon as he became pope, he sought to reform the devotion of the clergy.  He is also called the Pope of Holy Communion because he reduced the age at which children were able to receive communion.  Through this great saint’s writings and example, we learn how to fight heresy, and especially Modernism, without compromise.

The Fruit Of Our Labor

One of the side effects of sins of impurity is blindness of heart.  “By their fruits you shall know them.”  We see the fruits of both the evil and good people in our own lives and throughout the history of the Church.  It is no easy task to change one’s life.  We must carry our cross daily and in uniting our sufferings with those of Christ, we will truly bear good fruit in our lives.  We have a duty to follow the commandments with great love of God.

Our Hearts Will Be Revealed

We ask the Blessed Mother to help us through this liturgy, because it was she who stood at the foot of the cross.  Because of the elements of joy and paschal anticipation in the Mass, it is not fitting for this day in which all joy has been suppressed.  The Church is in mourning for her God, Who has died for her this day.  The Church is calling upon sinner to repent, and to partake of the fruit of the new tree – Christ Himself on the tree of the cross.

The Cost of Redemption

During the season of Passiontide, we see the cost of our Redemption.  The statues are veiled and every consolation is removed from us so that our attention may be focused on the sufferings of Christ alone.  We see in the Gospel the sin against the Holy Ghost in which one maliciously and deliberately interprets what is good as something evil.  Those guilty of this sin are the ones not worthy to receive forgiveness and will “die in their sin.”  In the face of such wickedness, seen especially in our own time, we should cling all the more loyally and faithfully to our suffering Savior.

What the Transfiguration Promises

At the Transfiguration, Christ took three apostles that represent three virtues. St. Peter represents duty, St. James represents knowledge, and St. John represents love. It was as if Christ relaxed and allowed His Divinity to shine through His human nature. This was shown to the apostles and to us to save us from discouragement in suffering. We see the glory that is in store. It is an insight into Heaven. We should not be fooled by the world and its false promises but always remember that in our Communions we received the Source of all good.

Penitential Mercy

Although many outside the Faith look askance at the penances Catholics perform, they are unable to explain the meaning of Christ’s words, “unless you do penance you will perish.”  We have great attachments to our vices, and it is only through grace and penance that we can learn truly to hate our sins.  The season of Lent is a time of mercy.  We receive this mercy through confessing our sins and receiving the sacraments.  We must pray the Confiteor and beg God to help us, with a true conviction of amending our lives.

Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Him

Death hurts us all, but the Church gives us words of comfort in the face of death when she reminds us that on the last day all will rise.  The coffin of the deceased is surrounded by candles at the Requiem Mass, representing Christ, the Light of the World.  Even those who have left the true Church have admitted the great comfort the Church offers us in our last moments.  In praying for final perseverance, we are asking for all the help necessary to fight the final attempts of the devil to steal our souls from God.  The deceased soul’s work is over, but ours is not.  We must continually pray for the souls in purgatory and pray for our own salvation.

Humility Makes Us Happy

A Catholic should never be sad, despite his troubles.  We see the example of the Little Flower, who died a painful death, at the age of twenty-four, yet she died laughing.  It is pride that makes us sad, and humility which makes us happy.  The Epistle tells us to forgive friends and enemies alike.  We forgive and ask for forgiveness.  Comparing our lives to those of our neighbor will impede our progress, while comparing them to the lives of the saints will make us saints.  Prayer, rather than argument, is the most effective way of converting our neighbor.

Believe And It Shall Be Done To You

We must first love God, then our neighbor, and then love ourselves according to God’s Will.  The three theological virtues are freely given, not earned.  When we reach heaven, faith and hope will no longer be needed, only charity will remain.  We practice charity, which is true love for neighbor, even when we do not like him – even when he attacks us.  Just as Our Lord saved the Apostles who were in danger on the stormy sea, we should never feel as if we are doomed.  We must tell God how deeply we believe and ask Him to increase our belief.
