Die To Self

Good Friday 2022
There is one thing that we know and can be certain about and that is that God became a Man and died on this day.  From all eternity this was in the Divine Mind and the ultimate purpose for all creation.  The Sacred Liturgy, in the absence of the Holy Mass today, re-presents the events on Calvary for us to share.  We are imitating the early Christians by using the same liturgical rites as they did.  When Our Lord died on the cross He made a special effort to direct and to entrust us to His own Mother.  We honor and love her as the Co-Redemptrix and Mother of Sorrows because her Divine Son instructed us to do this.  We must appreciate what our sins have done to Son and Mother and detest them by an immolation of our selfishness with Christ on the cross.

Traditor Not Traitor

Passion Sunday 2022
Saints this week include Sts. Isidore and Vincent Ferrer.  Friday honors our Mother of Sorrows.  We should imitate St. Joseph and the Holy Family and make every effort to attend Holy Week ceremonies, especially the Sacred Triduum.  St. Paul in the Epistle shows how the Old Testament prefigured Our Lord’s Passion and Death.  In the Gospel we see the conflict intensifying between Christ and the Pharisees because Jesus identifies Himself as God and one with the Father.  This so infuriates His enemies that they pick up building materials to stone Him but Our Lord hides from them.  We are reminded of this by the draping of the statues during these last two weeks of Lent called Passiontide.  We sinners, also,  have offended God and driven Him from our temples, our souls.

Lent Is A Season Of Joy

Ash Wednesday 2022
Septuagesima season has prepared us for this time of removing sin from our lives.  This should comfort us as we begin this time of penance.  When examining our conscience we should not look at self but at Our Lord crucified to realize the effects of our evil on Him.  Lent is the bond of unity in the Church when we all struggle together. By  Penance we understand different things.  It is the sacrament, a moral virtue and the acts flowing from it.  Ashes are given today because they are one of the three major sacramentals in the Church and remind us powerfully of death which is the consequence of Adam’s sin.  Finally, practical suggestions are given to help us choose and practice spiritual exercises which will make Lent truly beneficial for us.

You Will Die the Death

Septuagesima Sunday 2022
This is the beginning of the Septuagesima season as we transition from the joys of Christmas towards the sorrows of Holy Week and the glories of the Resurrection.  The stational church for today is St. Lawrence outside the Walls which reminds us of the death we inherit from Adam and Eve because of the cemetery that is attached to this church.  The Gloria and Alleluia are dropped from today’s Mass to re-enforce the realization of our fallen state.  Parents should not imitate our first parents in exposing their children to dangers which can destroy God’s life in their souls.

The Church Endures

24th Sunday After Pentecost 2021
Today’s Gospel is warning and a consolation that the good and evil grow together but are separated at the end and receive different rewards based on their deeds in life.  The Church has gone through troubles in the past and present but will always survive because of God’s preserving grace.  The enemies will have their apparent power stripped away.  We should not assume that we are the wheat and neglect to watch over our hearts and have weeds grow there instead.  The most successful apostolates are good example and prayer.  The virtuous life becomes easier as we practice it.

Signs Of Demonic Temptation

21st Sunday After Pentecost 2021
Tomorrow is the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist and today is the feast of St. Margaret Mary the Apostle of the Sacred Heart.  The Epistle for this Mass was written by St. Paul during his imprisonment and the armor of his jailers was a reminder to him of the defensive and offensive weapons that we have in our spiritual combat, not with natural forces but, with preternatural forces on high.  Lucifer is the leader of these proud fallen demons who are the cause of most of our temptations.  Sudden, disturbing, prideful, lying and divisive characteristics mark these attacks from the devil.  The Gospel warns us to be merciful because we have received mercy.  The Divine Maternity has an important attribute that honors Our Lady’s virginity before, during and after Christ’s birth.  The Holy Rosary is our great means of sanctification.

Saint Pius X, Our Pope

1st Friday Conference, October 2021
This conference begins with a sobering account of the current problems with the validity of the sacraments because of the devil’s hatred of priests and the means of salvation.  The story of today’s Saint Remy is encouraging in the face of this new paganism because this holy bishop baptized Clovis which began the life of the eldest daughter of the Church – France.  This month is dedicated to the Holy Rosary and quotations about it from the saints encourage us to pray it devoutly.  Finally, we recall our holy pope, St. Pius X, who enriched the Church and souls during his papacy.  His love for God and neighbor was evident in his efforts to preserve the Faith pure and undefiled, to honor Our Lady as Co-Redemptrix, to emphasize the Liturgy, increase devotion to the Holy Eucharist, increase study of the Bible, restore Gregorian chant, revise the Code of Canon Law, reform the Breviary and much more.  His sanctity was attested by conversions and miracles during his lifetime and during this canonization process.  He is our strong protector and supporter today against the evil of modernism.

Quis Ut Deus?

Feast Of St. Michael The Archangel
Today’s new vestment is a beautiful depiction of St. Michael defeating the devil who rebelled against God.  St. Michael received his name from his response to Lucifer’s challenge to the Blessed Trinity.  The leader of the good angels asked “who is like God” (Quis ut Deus)? And that became his name Michael.  On this day in the fifth century a church was dedicated to God in St. Michael’s honor and this feast celebrates that event and honors all the spirits called angels who are organized into nine choirs with different functions.  We have prayers and devotions which honor St. Michael and the angels.  He is the patron of many and one of our own was recently saved by invoking this protecting spirit.  A powerful exorcism against the devil invokes St. Michael’s aid and the uplifting hymn from today’s breviary praises him.

Our Lady of La Salette

17th Sunday After Pentecost 2021
Today is also the feast of St. Januarius who was martyred in the fourth century.  A vial of his blood is preserved in Naples in a reliquary and on his feastday it often liquifies to show the saint’s protection of the city.  It did so today. On this day in 1846 the Blessed Mother appeared to a shepherdess and a young boy who were pasturing cattle on the side of a hill in the French Alps.  Our Lady explained how disregard of the second and third commandments by profaning her Son’s Holy Name and missing Mass and doing servile work on Sundays were the causes of the famines etc. that were punishing the people.  She gave the children prophecies of terrible future events if the world did not convert and do penance.

Raised From The Dead

15th Sunday after Pentecost 2021
All profession days are beautiful moments for our religious communities and for the people.  Today is also unique and reminiscent of Jesus’ words about St. Paul at his conversion, “I will teach him to suffer for My Name”.   This joyful day is also a pure and perfect sacrifice in union with Our Lord on the Cross.  The means of this oblation are the evangelical vows of poverty, chastity and obedience that were professed this morning before Mass.  These are counsels from the Gospel which are for those called to embrace them and who are generous in doing so.  All the baptized must live the spirit of the vows but religious practice them.  Now begins the work of living the interior life deeply and thereby becoming a fruitful spouse of Christ.  There is much to learn about the theological virtues and the vows but the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Mother will be your guides.  Be stout-hearted because the Lord is your light and salvation  and He will never forget you.
