A Vocation Worth the Fight

2nd Sunday after Pentecost 2024
Tonsure Ceremony
With first tonsure one becomes a cleric.  This ceremony has been part of the Church since the 5th century.  Just as slaves were shorn to show their complete ownership by their master, so the cleric shows that he now belongs to Christ.  The surplice is imposed to represent putting on the new man, because holiness is no longer an aspiration but a direct call.  Our Lord promised to those who give up the world a hundredfold in this life.  The candle carried in procession represents the soul of those to be tonsured, and when the bishop receives and extinguishes the candle, it demonstrates that the very will of the cleric is offered to God.  God will grant the necessary graces to do everything he asks, if the cleric remains confident in Him as he forges on towards the goal.

Trinity In Unity

Trinity Sunday 2024
Today we honor the dogma at the heart of our Catholic Faith.  God, through His Divine Son, chose to reveal the truth of the Holy Trinity to mankind.  Although we could never reason to the existence of this great doctrine on our own, nor can we completely understand it in our finite minds, we firmly believe it through the gift of faith.  We should recite the Athanasian Creed to reaffirm our faith in opposition to those who deny it.  We must believe everything that Christ has revealed to us and be prepared at every moment to defend it.

The Prerequisite of Charity

Holy Thursday 2024
These are the most sacred days of the liturgical year, because they make present the very act of our Redemption.  The Holy Oils, from the Mass of the Chrism, receive their efficacy from the Holy Eucharist.  Today is the birthday of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which was offered in anticipation of Christ’s death on the Cross the following day.  A gift of Faith is required to believe the dogma of the Holy Eucharist.  The Holy Oils made this morning are prepared to sanctify us.  The exorcisms performed over these oils drive away the influence of the devil from the oils themselves and from all whom they will anoint.

The Real Battle

Ash Wednesday Evening 2024
Our heart should remain forever in the chapel with Our Lord.  Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the great practices of Lent.  The words that were spoken by God to Adam and Eve after the Fall are repeated for us today with the distribution of blessed ashes.  We are reminded of our mortality and the passing glory of this world.  If we always remember our mortality, we will certainly avoid sin.  When we fast it not only makes us weak, but it also brings us closer to God.  Christ came to Earth to suffer and die for our sins, and without His suffering we would not be saved.  How much do we owe Him in penance; how much do we owe Him in love?

From Dust to Dust

Ash Wednesday 2024
The Church reminds us of the fate that awaits all men.  We are mortal and destined to return to dust.  The sacramental of blessed ashes reminds us of our mortality and also the transient nature of worldly glory.  From the triumphant Roman generals to the Byzantine emperors,  a Memento Mori has been a common practice to remind men that if their hearts are set on perishable things, their souls will perish with them.  For good Catholics this is not a season of sorrow but of liberation from the attachments of the world.  We should see every day we are given as a merciful call from God for a conversion of life.

Saint Blaise

Feast of Saint Blaise 2024
St. Blaise was a physician who became a bishop. He was greatly loved by the faithful and they flocked to him because of his great knowledge and spiritual direction.  St. Blaise was arrested during the last of the great Roman persecutions of the Church.  On his journey he was met by a mother who pleaded with the saint to save her son who was choking on a fish bone.  St. Blaise miraculously saved the boy from death.  While he was in prison, he was brought candles and food by his loving devotees.  After his martyrdom the miracles and devotion to this saint spread far and wide throughout the Church.

The blessing of throats is a sacramental to help cure any problems of the throat, along with any other afflictions.  By the invocative blessing of throats, it does not place us in the realm of the divine, but it calls down God’s aid on the individual.

Pray For Their Rest

All Souls Day 2023
The Mass of the dead is really the Mass of life.  Virtually nobody prays for the dead, which is a great injustice.  Although Purgatory is not formally denied, it is simply never mentioned.  We must pray for the priests and religious who held fast to the true traditions of our Faith, and all the faithful who were buried from our Chapel.  When we die, we are incapable of making any more choices, and are unable to merit or demerit.  Nothing sullied can be in the presence of God, and the justice of God demands that we make up for our sins.  Few people in this life make satisfaction for their temporal punishment so God in his mercy offers them Purgatory.  It is a place of great joy and great longing.  God has ennobled our prayers so that what we pray can affect our neighbor.  God will grant mercy to the Holy Souls on the condition that we ask.

Our Invitation To Heaven

19th Sunday after Pentecost 2023
The Epistle for today’s Mass speaks of Baptism, in which the “new man” of Sanctifying Grace is given to the soul, and the Holy Trinity comes to dwell within it. St. Paul tells us not to give place to the devil, and we can follow his direction by the use of the Rosary and the Brown Scapular. The wedding feast of the Gospel refers to Heaven, and the Rosary is the prayer which takes us there. We cannot enter Heaven without the wedding garment of Sanctifying Grace.

Our Hand In Hers

First Friday October 2023
There have been many sacramentals in honor of the Blessed Virgin, but the Dominican Rosary seems to be favored above all others.  The Rosary is the sign of a true Catholic.  It is a beautiful prayer, but it is difficult and is often neglected because it requires effort.  The Rosary is particularly a gift for our modern times because it is a weapon against secularism, religious indifferentism, and the other heresies which abound.  It disposes a person for infused contemplation.  This is what we pray for when we ask that we “may imitate what [the mysteries of the Rosary] contain and obtain what they promise.”

Running To Our Lord

Feast of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus 2023
Investiture of Sister Rose Michael
When the priest gives the habit of Mount Carmel, it is Christ Himself giving the habit and all the graces attached to it.  God wishes that a person embrace religion willingly, without any external pressure.  In poverty we place all our trust in divine assistance.  In chastity we experience the true meaning of love, offering body and soul to our Divine Savior.  In holy obedience we follow God’s Will through our superiors.  God is calling us to live a life joined to the Passion.  We will be sanctified if we maintain great desires in our holy vocation.
