We Must Answer to God

26th Sunday after Pentecost 2024
In this Epistle St. Paul encourages the Thessalonians, who were enduring persecution for the Faith, instructing them to persevere in their struggle.  The parables in the Gospel similarly encourage Christ’s followers by explaining the external growth of the Church as well as our internal growth in sanctity.  God’s ways are not ours; His way is irresistible.  We should be encouraged by the words of this Gospel and never forget the favors God has sent us.  Our battle is with principalities and powers, and it is easy to be fooled by the sophistries of a pagan society – a society which constantly makes excuses for the murder of the unborn.  Each of us, even the great and powerful, will have to make an answer to God for the choices of his life.

Our Belief In Purgatory

All Souls Day 2024 – Evening
The Vestment for tonight’s Mass displays a cross intertwined with the branches of a weeping willow, reminding us to weep for those souls who have not reached their heavenly reward.  Because of its implicit denial of the general resurrection of the dead, the practice of cremation was so condemned by the Church that it incurred the penalty of excommunication.  We see how ancient the practice of praying for the dead is from the account of the Machabees.  To say that everyone goes to Heaven directly contradicts the words of Christ, the Scriptures, Tradition, and reason.  The souls in Purgatory are so close to their eternal end, and we must do what we can to speed their journey.

Care For The Departed

All Souls Day 2024
We come to this Mass to help the Poor Souls.  Holy Mother Church does not neglect any of her children, even those detained in Purgatory, because God greatly desires that we care for the dead.  The origin of the maniple that the priest wears was originally a handkerchief to wipe the tears from his eyes, and in union with him we all weep for the Holy Souls today.  Everything is directed to the souls in Purgatory.  Even on this First Saturday, when the Blessed Mother is usually the focus, she defers to the suffering souls.  We pray for final perseverance, so that when we are attacked by the devil in our last moments, we will turn to God.  Heaven is only for the perfect, and in order to enter we must have no attachment to sin.  If we do not remove those attachments in this life, we must remove them in the next.

True Affection For The Dead

All Souls Day Evening 2023
Our bodies at the time of death are separated from our souls and undergo corruption.  All the souls of the departed will hear the voice of the Son of God at the Last Judgment.  It is an ancient practice, and one that is natural to man, to pray for the dead.  We must be punished for our sins.  Even if our guilt is removed in the sacrament of Penance, we must still make up for our sins.  Purgatory is a place of mercy, and we have the ability to aid the souls detained there.  Our Faith is based on worshiping God and the salvation of our souls.

Pray For Their Rest

All Souls Day 2023
The Mass of the dead is really the Mass of life.  Virtually nobody prays for the dead, which is a great injustice.  Although Purgatory is not formally denied, it is simply never mentioned.  We must pray for the priests and religious who held fast to the true traditions of our Faith, and all the faithful who were buried from our Chapel.  When we die, we are incapable of making any more choices, and are unable to merit or demerit.  Nothing sullied can be in the presence of God, and the justice of God demands that we make up for our sins.  Few people in this life make satisfaction for their temporal punishment so God in his mercy offers them Purgatory.  It is a place of great joy and great longing.  God has ennobled our prayers so that what we pray can affect our neighbor.  God will grant mercy to the Holy Souls on the condition that we ask.

We Are Offered With Christ

20th Sunday after Pentecost 2023
The three principal parts of the Mass are the Offertory, the Consecration, and the Communion of the Priest.  If we miss one of these parts, we have not assisted at Mass.  We are united to the sacrifice and are offered up with Christ.  The Mass is the purpose of creation, because it is the essence of religion and the greatest means of offering honor to God.  We are told to redeem the time we have lost.  We have the grace to make a conversion at any moment.  We need to pray fervently, because our salvation depends on it.

Our Hand In Hers

First Friday October 2023
There have been many sacramentals in honor of the Blessed Virgin, but the Dominican Rosary seems to be favored above all others.  The Rosary is the sign of a true Catholic.  It is a beautiful prayer, but it is difficult and is often neglected because it requires effort.  The Rosary is particularly a gift for our modern times because it is a weapon against secularism, religious indifferentism, and the other heresies which abound.  It disposes a person for infused contemplation.  This is what we pray for when we ask that we “may imitate what [the mysteries of the Rosary] contain and obtain what they promise.”

Comfort Her

Funeral Mass for Saundra Warner
The Church encourages us to pray always for the deceased that she be released from Purgatory if she is still detained there.  We know that praying for the dead is not in vogue but its practice is pre-Christian because all peoples, sharing the primitive revelation from Adam and Eve, offered sacrifices for their departed loved ones so they could be freed from a place of purifying after death.  It was recognized that after death we were rewarded or punished for our deeds in life.  Christ approved of the Jews praying for the dead during His life in the Holy Land.  We can help pay the debt for one of our own and thereby comfort her.

Christ The King Conference

First Friday, November 2021
Two final notes concerning the Holy Souls are how they pass time in Purgatory and how we relate to them. We are raised with the secular teaching that the Church and State should be separated.  Christ spoke to the people of His time as integral individuals and did not dichotomize them by their public and private lives.  The Our Father petitions for the coming of His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.  Christ did not limit Himself to individuals but commanded preaching to entire nations.  All this is based on the hypostatic union which constitutes Our Lord as priest and king.  St. Pius X said that the problems of the world are permitted by the laxity and lukewarmness of passive Catholics.

Remember Death

All Souls Day, Evening 2021
The ancient pagan art in Rome often had death as its theme.  We too should meditate on death but Christianize it by seeing the goal as God in heaven.  Some of our brethren have not achieved the goal yet and are in Purgatory.  We can assist them by praying for them and teaching others, especially our children, to pray for them.  By taking a moment to help the Holy Souls we will be gaining friends for eternity.
