Enkindle The Fire For Heaven

Lynn Burdi Funeral Mass
We miss and will always pray for the deceased who had a love for the traditional Latin Mass and for the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Her rose garden in front of the chapel is the constant reminder of that.  We here who mourn our loss must pray and sacrifice for her to be released from Purgatory if she is there being purified in preparation for her entrance into heaven. The merciful fire that accomplishes this is ignited by our love through the Holy Mass so we must pray fervently for her now and in the future.

God Thinks Thoughts of Peace

24th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Introit for these final Sundays after Pentecost is from the letter of Jeremias to the exiles in Babylon and reassures them that God will lead them back to the promised land as He leads us back to heaven.  The Gospel encourages us to believe that Christ, who sleeps now during the storm, will save us at the right time.  St. Paul in the Epistle directs us to love our neighbor by obeying the commandments. We can show love to our neighbor by praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.  It is wise to teach your children this practice so they will pray for you someday.

Be Prepared To Meet God

All Souls Day Evening 2018
All Souls Day is a consoling Catholic liturgical commemoration which distinguishes us from other religions.  It reminds us of the perfection required for entrance into heaven and a place of mercy for those who still need purification.  It warns us of hell if we die an enemy of God.  Christ said we must pay even the last penny and so the souls in Purgatory are doing that by making amends for their sins.  We must pray for the dead and for ourselves in facing death.  God has given us the sacrament of Extreme Unction which prepares us to meet God and we should pray for this great gift daily.

The Embrace That Wakes The Dead

All Souls Day 2018
We are called on All Souls Day to be like the religious Sisters of the Society of the Helpers of the Holy Souls by praying and sacrificing for the relief and release of those detained in Purgatory.  A member of this congregation, Mother St. Austin, wrote much about the purgatorial life and those who live it.  In excerpts from her poetry we learn about God’s great love of the souls of the Church Suffering and how He embraces them and brings them to heaven once they have been perfected through their time of purification.  St. Mary Magdalen is their patroness because she is the example for us of how the sins of a lifetime can be expiated as she accomplished it in three hours at the foot of the Cross.

His Kingdom Of Love

Feast Of Christ The King 2018
After a preview of All Saints and All Souls Days, the sermon proper for the feast of Christ the King begins after the Epistle and Gospel.  Pope Pius XI established the feast in 1925 to counter the secularism that permeates our society.  After an examination of the causes leading up to our modern errors we are given the teaching on the social kingdom of Christ which frees us from the shackles of sin.  Our Lord has given us a kingdom of peace, unity, holiness and above all love.  We must love in return and not despise His love.

Consolation At The Time Of Death

Funeral Mass October 12, 2018

At this funeral Mass we are reminded about the importance of praying for the dead.  We must die because of Adam’s sin which we inherit and we must free ourselves from the guilt and punishment of our own actual sins.  Christ has given us the Sacrament of Penance to remove guilt but we may depart this life still with a debt to be paid and that is accomplished in Purgatory.  Now our work begins by praying for the departed.  These truths are a blessing to Catholics who know from them what to do when death claims one of our loved ones.  The Sacrament of Extreme Unction has been given by Our Lord just for the moment of death and the Church provides the Apostolic Blessing to give us added encouragement at this critical time.

None Is Justified In God’s Sight

All Souls Day Evening 2017

“It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead.”  This citation from the Old Testament shows how much the Jews cared for their deceased family and friends.  The need for prayer after death is due to the effects that sin leaves its in us and all must be purged before we can enter heaven.  Even the saints, as holy as they were, admitted their daily failings that needed to be purified.  We merit and satisfy now for our sins but the souls in Purgatory can only undergo suffering to make satisfaction but without merit.  God loves the Holy Souls and is more close to them than to those still on the earth.

The Doctrine On Purgatory

All Souls Day 2017

Despite the tone of mourning and sorrow the Church has infused this Mass on All Souls Day with hope.  The reason for this is explained by the teachings of our Faith about Purgatory where those who have died as imperfect friends of God are purified of the obstacles that impede their entrance into heaven.  This devotion is ancient in the Church and in history and the liturgical expression of it is examined.  Finally, the saints are cited for their insights.

Necrology

All Souls Day 2017

Pray for the faithful departed, especially those from this chapel.  We must appreciate how perfectly pure and reverent one needs to be in order to enter Gods presence.  Holy Souls are in peace and depend on the living to be purified.  Have mercy on them because the hand of the Lord has touched them.  Have Masses offered for them.  Our known vices must be eliminated now with merit or else they will be the cause of our punishment without merit.  A word to the wise is sufficient.

Do Not Delay Your Conversion

Last Sunday after Pentecost 2016

Our Lord admonishes us that when the end of the world comes, many will not expect it and, more importantly, not be prepared for it. There have been numerous times when the world did not expect the widespread destruction that occurred, such as the total destruction of Jerusalem where “not one stone was left upon a stone.” Scripture tells us about the events that we will see in the final days citing the analogy of the fig tree, that when it sprouts and sends forth its buds you know that Spring is near. It also warns us not to believe the deceivers who give false statements about the presence of Christ in the final days. We should use the upcoming new liturgical year to prepare our souls to receive the Master when the Angels sound the trumpet announcing His return.
