The Dogmas of Christmas

In a moment in time the Word assumed a human nature and from then on, He was completely God and completely man and will be so for all eternity.  This feast of Christmas also includes the doctrine of the Virgin Birth.  The Blessed Mother was virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ.  This miracle foreshadowed the Resurrection, in which Christ passed through His tomb while leaving it shut.

The reason why the Son became man was first to honor His Father, and only secondarily for the salvation of mankind.  All things were made as an expression of His goodness, and all mankind was made for God first.  God became a Father in a new way on Christmas, because it was only then that He became Father in the flesh.  Our Lord came to dwell forever in our hearts as the King of Peace.  This is a feast of hope which offers a foretaste of the final victory at the end of time.  The three Masses of Christmas focus, first on the eternal birth of the Son from the Father, then the birth of the Word in the Flesh, and finally the birth of the Word in men’s hearts.  Christ appeared as a helpless child, and all are drawn to the innocence and purity of an infant.  It teaches each one of us to become like little children so we might enter the kingdom of Heaven.

The Best Gift for His Mother

Conference on Grace and The Immaculate Conception – When we speak of perfect passive conception, we refer to the moment in which the product of active conception is infused with a soul and becomes a human person.  From this moment of perfect passive conception, the Virgin Mary was redeemed in a preservative, not a liberative, manner.  The Blessed Mother from this point possessed a greater union with God than all the angels and saints.  Our Lady was not only free from the guilt of Original Sin, but also the concupiscence of the flesh, of the eyes, and the pride of life.  By a divine ligature, she was unable to consent to even the slightest imperfections.

Sanctifying Grace is a created share in the supernatural life of God.  When God breathed human life into Adam, He breathed a share of divine life into him as well.  Grace must be valued above all things.  We must be willing to live and die to preserve it.  The Blessed Mother was given the plenitude of grace in preparation for her role as the Mother of God, as well as Mother to each one of us.

St. Francis’ Knowledge and God’s ‘Little Ones’

St. Francis of Assisi is greatly misunderstood and mistakenly viewed as the saint of the ecologists.  He composed a poem, which he gave to the members of his order, and this “Song of the Sun” demonstrates St. Francis’ love of nature – not for its own sake but because of its Creator.  The gift of knowledge gives one a better appreciation of God’s attributes through the beauty of the natural world.  This makes us desire the happiness of Heaven and earnestly pray that we may possess it.

The hallmark of the life of St. Therese of Lisieux is the doctrine of spiritual childhood.  In the Gospels, Our Lord not only spoke of the necessity of spiritual childhood for salvation, but warned against giving scandal to the innocent “little ones.”  St. Therese made the appreciation of her helplessness and complete trust in God the foundation of her spiritual life.  She spent her life doing little things with great love, and if we do the same, we too will be safe.

For Those Who Have Lost Their Way

St. Tarcisius lived during the days of great persecution.  He was ordained an acolyte or deacon as a young man, and was commissioned to care for the Christian prisoners.  While bringing Viaticum to these captives, St. Tarcisius was accosted by a group of pagans.  He gave his life rather than expose the Holy Eucharist to desecration.

Devotion to the Holy Infant of Prague is loved and honored by Our Lord Himself.  Our Lord is not a child now, but this is the humble state in which He first appeared in the world.  The statue depicts the Holy Infant as both God and Man, as well as King of all creation.  His welcoming gentleness seems to radiate out from the Infant Jesus of Prague.  He makes Himself a guide to all those who have lost their way.

Much is said about the accomplishments of St. Pius X, but not enough about his interior life.  His prayer had reached the heights of contemplation and was directed by the Holy Ghost.  He radiated goodness and wanted to comfort everybody, yet fought unwaveringly against the enemies of his spiritual children.

Where Joy and Sorrow Meet

Feast of the Purification 2024
The candle is one of the great sacramentals of the Church.  It is like a sacrament in the sense that it is an outward sign, but unlike a sacrament, it does not give grace automatically.  This day links Our Lord and the Blessed Mother so closely.  Today we remember both the joyful mystery of the Rosary and the first of the Virgin Mary’s great sorrows.  Because the Mother of God was not affected by original sin, and because of the Virginal Birth, she was not subject to the law requiring purification.  However, she submitted to it in all humility.  God used the New Eve to carry the New Adam into the Garden, when the Blessed Mother carried Our Lord into the temple.

The Family, The Foundation of the World

Feast of the Holy Family 2024
St. Joseph is the head of our family.  He was formed in the image of God the Father because he was given a share of the same love that God possesses for His Son.  St. Joseph loves us as he loved Christ, because we are part of the Mystical Body.  The Blessed Virgin is the true Mother of God because she gave Him His human life.  Our Lord knew all things in His Divine Mind, but He chose to learn as we do in His human mind, so He could be the perfect model of humility.  He wanted to be like us, so we would want to be like Him.  Today we are taught about the virtue of obedience, without which we cannot be saved.

Now God Has A Name

The saints of the Christmas season are St. Stephen, the model of resistance against unbelief, St. John, the Apostle against division within the Church, and the Holy Innocents, who are the models standing against corrupt governments.  Today is the feast of the Circumcision, which offers proof of the true humanity of Christ, because on this day He shed the first drops of His Precious Blood.  In participating in this ceremony of the Old Law, Christ was associated with us sinners, and will be for all eternity.  Today God was given a name that all could utter.  When we call upon the name of Jesus, we ask God to save our soul.  Today is also the Solemnity of Mary which proclaims the Virgin Birth.

Our Rise or Our Fall

No longer are we slaves of the law, no longer are we separated from God.  God has made us His friends.  He loves every creature He has created but He is forced, so to speak, to hate the sinner by the sinner’s own choice.  God’s irrational creatures fulfill His will by necessity, but we have been given a free will and the ability to choose.  Our friendship with God may be maintained by simply following His commandments as His other creatures do.  We must ask ourselves if throughout the previous year we have risen to the role of true Christians or if we are Christians only in name.

Light Will Conquer Darkness

We have the privilege of giving glory and proper worship to the Trinity on this day.  We celebrate the dogma of the Redemptive Incarnation.  In His infinite love, God became man, lived with us and died for us.  Our Lord’s enemies try to attack and undermine this great feast, but without success.  We must love justice and hate iniquity.  The Light spoken about in the Gospel is the Son of God Himself.  Everyone is offered the light of God’s grace, and those who receive it are made sons of God.  The devil’s plan is to turn mankind from God, but we know the victory has already been won.  In the face of the world, we are unwavering in our obedience to the Trinity.

A Silent And Holy Night

It is a true joy to relive the happiness of that night in Bethlehem in which our Savior was born.  It was in silence and solitude Our Lord entered the world.  Just as Christ passed through the rock of His tomb at the moment of His Resurrection, He passed through the womb of the Blessed Mother, without violating her virginity.  This chapel is our Bethlehem, in which we relive the moments of the Nativity.  We are united with all of our forefathers throughout the history of the Church.  Our Lord came not only for the glory of His Father, but for us and our salvation.  Christmas is the beginning of Christ’s victory over the world.
