Pray Like The Publican

10th Sunday after Pentecost 2019
The Church wants us to recall the special gifts given to it in the early days to help the spread of the Faith.  The Holy Ghost continues to give us graces today.  In the Gospel we are reminded about praying with humility as the publican did.  We should avoid the proud attitude of the pharisee.  The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary should help us foster devotion to our Heavenly Mother under this title which is so closely tied to the Sacred Heart of her divine Son.

Noli Timere

9th Sunday after Pentecost
We must never be afraid because Our Lord said “I am with you all days.”  He told us to pray without ceasing because prayer is so powerful and tied to His mercy.  The Epistle and Gospel warn us not to show ingratitude and indifferentism in the face of God’s goodness.  The Gospel in particular stresses the importance of not neglecting the smallest moment of grace lest we not recognize it and mourn the time of our visitation.

Transfiguration Conference

Feast Of The Transfiguration 2019
In this conference we learn that transfiguration is not uncommon in the lives of the saints.  The Collect for the Mass today is key to unlocking this feast day.  It says that the mystery or sacrament of the Faith is confirmed through this theophany.  The outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace is Our Lord Himself and the Father commands us to listen to Him.  Moses and Elias confirm this while speaking to Jesus about His upcoming Death.  This event marked Christ’s directing of His Life now to the Cross.  He relaxed in prayer and allowed His divinity to manifest through His humanity.  This strengthened Him and His apostles for what lay ahead.  The Transfiguration is our bulwark against all our trials today.

Concentrate On Heaven

8th Sunday after Pentecost 2019
Have a special devotion to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart during this month.  The liturgy reminds us of all the graces we receive in God’s house and how we should appreciate it.  One benefit is becoming a child of God and knowing Him as our Father not just as our Creator.  Our Lord warns us in the Gospel to use the material things of the world for those less fortunate then ourselves and He says to imitate the zeal of the pagans not for earthly gains but for heaven itself.

Bible Facts

19th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The 19th Sunday after Pentecost reminds us not to neglect the divine invitation to the marriage feast and to come prepared wearing our wedding garment symbolizing grace.  Clothed as a new man we will put aside sin and follow the commandments.  Today is also the feast of St. Jerome, the translator of our missal texts and patron of Scripture study.  This then provided an opportunity to refute several attacks against Catholics concerning the Bible.

Do Not Be Paralyzed By Sin

18th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
St. Paul’s Epistle for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost tells us the importance of the grace of God which the Holy Ghost gives us many times each day.  We should never neglect these daily opportunities and we should use them to fight off the devil and his temptations.  We should not let sin paralyze us.  The Gospel is a beautiful account which shows the authentic mercy of God.  We should ask our angels to help us pray and repent.

Humility Reveals Our Faults

17th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The 17th Sunday after Pentecost is a Mass about humility and how this virtue points to our faults and not to our neighbor’s. This year it follows the feasts of the Holy Cross and Seven Sorrows which remind us of the gifts from God like His Cross and Blessed Mother.  We should seek to appreciate these especially as we have them in the Holy Mass.  Would we not travel around the globe to attend just one Mass?  Then we should love and cherish every Mass we attend.

Draw Us To Yourself

Exaltation of the Holy Cross 2018
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a renewal of Good Friday but with the emphasis on the glorifying of the instrument of our salvation. From His Holy Cross, He calls to us and draws us to Himself.  At this Mass we are meant to respond generously to this invitation and become as Tertullian described the early Christians “Cross Lovers”.  The Cross was the means by which the Church was delivered from three centuries of persecution when Constantine triumphed by it.  His mother, St. Helen, shortly after discovered the true Cross.  Centuries later the emperor restored the Cross to its basilica in Jerusalem.  All these events are remembered today and encourage us to remain faithful.

Prevenient And Concomitant Grace

16th Sunday after Pentecost 2018 Conference
The Collect of the Mass for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost is a concise and direct statement about another beautiful aspect of the doctrine on grace.  The realization of this teaching will make us better appreciate how much we depend on God for the littlest supernatural act we perform – no matter how easy and even connatural it seems to us.  St. Paul’s Epistle shows us the principle that is God, namely, that Goodness is self-diffusive and more so the closer we are to It.

Labor Day

15th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost is a quintessential Mass for the season.  From the hope expressed in the Introit to the Communion verse about our Life in the Eucharist we are assured of God’s mercy on the path to Heaven.  This year the Sunday falls before Labor Day and it is good to remember the holiday’s Catholic roots in medieval Guilds and what the modern popes have written about this important component of society.
