Sermon From The Feast Of Christ the King 2013 On this feast of Christ the King we recall Quas Primas, the encyclical letter of Pope Pius XI, which explains this teaching on Our Lord’s social kingdom and the reasons for instituting this feast. Later this week we have the holyday of obligation known as All Saints day and the following day we have All Souls day which reminds us of the holy souls in Purgatory who are being purified before entering heaven. Taken together we have the Church Militant, Church Triumphant and Church Suffering being presented to us as the perfect union of the Mystical Body of Christ. The fact that only Truth has rights produces its wonderful consequences in salvation history where the desire for sanctity and living for God are beautifully seen and realized under the peaceful and loving reign of Jesus Christ. #20131027
Conference On First Friday October 2013 St. Francis is greatly misunderstood in our day but was, in fact, a true son of the Church. By his words and example, he made innumerable converts. The Gospel for the Mass of his feast day emphasizes his charity. He was an utterly selfless man. The Little Flower, St. Thérèse, despite all the differences between her life and St. Francis’, shared many similarities to him in spirit. She promised to spend her Heaven doing good on Earth. Poverty of spirit makes one recognize his nothingness. We must remember that sometimes God sends us suffering to open our eyes to the truth. #20131004
Sermon From 18th Sunday After Pentecost 2013 This sermon tells the story of Saint Matthew who was unique and unlike any of the other disciples chosen by Our Lord. However, this sermon includes multiple talks including loyalty and friendship with the example of the friends to the man who was lowered down to Christ in today’s Gospel. Also, the vice of covetousness is warned against as seen in people of pride and those who have a grasping desire for power and wealth. We are instructed to pray with faith because our prayers lack faith and this is the cause of the lack of miracles today. Lastly, we are reminded that repentance for sins is paramount and a clear conscience allows one to pray better. #20130925
Sermon From The 9th Sunday After Pentecost 2013 – 10am Mass Tomorrow is the feast of the great penitent, St. Mary Magdalen. Early in life she fell into sin which made her like Satan. However, Our Lord’s love frees us from sin. Some, like the Pharisees, rejected His love. Even mortal sins can be forgiven by a perfect act of contrition. The Blessed Mother will help us as St. Mary Magdalen discovered. Christ praised our saint for choosing the better way in contemplation and giving all as shown by her anointing Him with oil. After the Epistle and Gospel follows an instruction on the priesthood and religious life which stresses the importance of zeal for the commandments as expressed through the vows so thereby we lay up treasures in heaven. #20130721
Sermon From The Feast Of All Saints 2012 We recall the great doctrine of the communion of saints while celebrating the Church Triumphant today. The feast originated when the relics of the martyrs were removed from the catacombs and were brought in triumphal procession to be placed in the Pantheon, now consecrated to the Blessed Mother and all the martyrs. There are far more saints than those we are able to celebrate throughout the year, so this feast is for all those other saints, both known and unknown. In the liturgy we are given a glimpse of the Lamb of God surrounded by all His saints and angels. At every Mass we practice the adoration which we will perform for all eternity in Heaven. Our goal is to join all the saints of the Heavenly court along with our Divine Savior Who calls us to come to Him on this holy day. #20121101M
Sermon From The 18th Sunday after Pentecost 2012 St. Jerome was an extraordinarily learned man, especially in the fields of rhetoric and language. Pope St. Damasus commissioned him to translate the entirety of the Bible into Latin. To this day the translation of St. Jerome, known as the Vulgate, is considered the official scriptural translation of the Catholic Church.
St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved saints of the Church. After hearing the words of the Gospel preached in a sermon, he renounced his inheritance and worldly possessions and dedicated his life to God. Although he is mistakenly viewed as a saint of ecology, he only wrote so beautifully about the natural world because of the gift of knowledge, which he possessed to a great degree. This mystic gift enables a soul to see the emptiness of the world except for its expression of God’s glory.
The feast of the Holy Guardian Angels celebrates all those angels that are given to us from birth to watch over and protect us. We should frequently speak and pray to our Guardian angels. In the Gospel of that Mass, Our Lord warns against the sin of scandal. We are called to avoid evil and the appearances of evil. The clergy and parents in particular must be on guard against this terrible sin. #20120930
Feast of Saint Michael 2012 This feast has been celebrated for nearly 1,500 years. The existence of angels, or some form of spiritual guardian, has been affirmed by people of every culture and religion. We have not only been told about their existence through Divine Revelation, but God has allowed them to visit us innumerable times throughout history. The angels are quasi-infinite in number, because each of them was made to reflect a perfection of God. We will never appreciate all our guardian angels have done for us. We give our good angels great joy when we are virtuous, and we give them great power to aid us when we invoke their help. St. Michael was chosen as God’s great defender, not because he was the most powerful, but because he was most Godlike in his love. #20120929S
During an early persecution of the Church, St. Januarius was so loyal to his friends that, at the risk of his own life, he went to visit them while they were imprisoned. This heroic choice led to his arrest and martyrdom. The importance of the virtue of loyalty should be inculcated by parents into their children.
We have received great instruction during the thirty days of Our Lady. The reason why the devotion of the five first Saturdays of the month exists is because Our Lord desires that we make up for the five great attacks against His Holy Mother, particularly the attacks against her perpetual virginity. Thirty days are not enough to make up for all the Blessed Virgin has suffered for each of us. We must remain confident that God will have mercy on us if we persevere in prayer. #20120916M
Sermon From 9th Sunday After Pentecost 2012 Catholics should be familiar with the story of St. Martha and what it teaches us about the importance of prioritizing the spiritual life over the good works of an active life. There are many who so spend themselves in “good works” that they have no time left for Our Lord. We should practice ardent, frequent, and brief prayers throughout the day.
Saints Abdon and Sennen are two saints from Persia. They were known for their great charity to the poor and needy, and in particular for their dedication to burying the dead – that corporal work of mercy which led to their arrest and martyrdom. The early devotion towards these two saints demonstrates the universality of the Church.
After being badly wounded in war, St. Ignatius of Loyola spent much of his convalescence reading the lives of the saints. It was this practice of spiritual reading that led to the conversion of his worldly life, and subsequently the founding of the Society of Jesus, with its countless missionary journeys throughout the world.
St. Alphonsus Ligori followed a vocation despite the great opposition from his father. He is considered one of the chief moral theologians of the Church.
Through divine inspiration Saint Peter Julian Eymard knew that he must dedicate his life, along with the religious orders he founded, to the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
St. Dominic met with great difficulty in converting the Albigensians to the Faith, until he, at the request of Our Lady, begin to use the Holy Rosary in combination with his preaching. With the help of this powerful prayer, he experienced astounding success in his mission. #20120729
Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2012 Today the Church focuses particularly on St. Peter. He was a simple fisherman, yet he was chosen to lead the Church. We should desire to imitate the great love and docility that St. Peter showed throughout his life. We observe the flaws of his nature in the Gospel. However, we also see that, by the hand of God, a supernatural edifice was built on that natural foundation, just as the Church was built on this rock. This great saint instructs us in the lesson he was taught by Christ – to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God. He had such trust in Our Lord that during his imprisonment and in the face of his execution, he slept soundly in his cell. This is the feast which reminds us that we too must possess undying trust and hope in the providence of God. #20120629M
