During an early persecution of the Church, St. Januarius was so loyal to his friends that, at the risk of his own life, he went to visit them while they were imprisoned. This heroic choice led to his arrest and martyrdom. The importance of the virtue of loyalty should be inculcated by parents into their children.
We have received great instruction during the thirty days of Our Lady. The reason why the devotion of the five first Saturdays of the month exists is because Our Lord desires that we make up for the five great attacks against His Holy Mother, particularly the attacks against her perpetual virginity. Thirty days are not enough to make up for all the Blessed Virgin has suffered for each of us. We must remain confident that God will have mercy on us if we persevere in prayer. #20120916M
Sermon From 9th Sunday After Pentecost 2012 Catholics should be familiar with the story of St. Martha and what it teaches us about the importance of prioritizing the spiritual life over the good works of an active life. There are many who so spend themselves in “good works” that they have no time left for Our Lord. We should practice ardent, frequent, and brief prayers throughout the day.
Saints Abdon and Sennen are two saints from Persia. They were known for their great charity to the poor and needy, and in particular for their dedication to burying the dead – that corporal work of mercy which led to their arrest and martyrdom. The early devotion towards these two saints demonstrates the universality of the Church.
After being badly wounded in war, St. Ignatius of Loyola spent much of his convalescence reading the lives of the saints. It was this practice of spiritual reading that led to the conversion of his worldly life, and subsequently the founding of the Society of Jesus, with its countless missionary journeys throughout the world.
St. Alphonsus Ligori followed a vocation despite the great opposition from his father. He is considered one of the chief moral theologians of the Church.
Through divine inspiration Saint Peter Julian Eymard knew that he must dedicate his life, along with the religious orders he founded, to the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
St. Dominic met with great difficulty in converting the Albigensians to the Faith, until he, at the request of Our Lady, begin to use the Holy Rosary in combination with his preaching. With the help of this powerful prayer, he experienced astounding success in his mission. #20120729
Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2012 Today the Church focuses particularly on St. Peter. He was a simple fisherman, yet he was chosen to lead the Church. We should desire to imitate the great love and docility that St. Peter showed throughout his life. We observe the flaws of his nature in the Gospel. However, we also see that, by the hand of God, a supernatural edifice was built on that natural foundation, just as the Church was built on this rock. This great saint instructs us in the lesson he was taught by Christ – to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God. He had such trust in Our Lord that during his imprisonment and in the face of his execution, he slept soundly in his cell. This is the feast which reminds us that we too must possess undying trust and hope in the providence of God. #20120629M
Conference On First Friday, June 2012 The Blessed Virgin Mary is a true queen, with authority and jurisdiction granted to her by her Divine Son. She was given this title from the days of the catacombs. Our Lord is a true King in the proper sense, both as God and man, due to His Grace of Union; and here we find the root of Our Lady’s queenship. Because of her unique relationship with almighty God, she is what one might call the “Queen Mother.” The human nature of God the Son was produced from her and, because of this, Our Lord would not be King in His human nature if it were not for her. She is, therefore, not only queen of Heaven and Earth, but also queen of Purgatory. She is queen of angels and saints, and queen of religious orders.
Catholics should understand the true nature of the gift of tongues which was granted to the Apostles on Pentecost. The miracle was found in the fact that all the foreigners heard the Apostles speaking in their own languages. It should not be identified with the false “gift of tongues” found in heretical religious sects. This miraculous gift was granted to the early Church to strengthen and unify it in its infancy and to aid in the spread of the true Church. #20120601
Conference from 1st Friday May 2012 In the early Church, widowhood was considered a special vocation for women. Widows would dedicate themselves to the care of the church and looked to St. Monica as their special patron. The tears of St. Monica merited the conversion of her son, who left behind his dissolute life and became one of the greatest theologians and philosophers of the Church. St. Monica came from a Christian family in Northern Africa. As a young woman she was inclined to drink excessively. When this vice was discovered, in her shame, St. Monica vowed to never drink wine again and kept that promise for the rest of her life.
When the force of the human will is aided by divine assistance it is truly astounding what can be accomplished. If we want something enough, we do what is necessary to get it, but if we don’t want to do it, the least excuse will prevent us from trying. If we are forgetful of self, focused on our duty, and rely on divine assistance, we will overcome the greatest obstacles. #20120504
3rd Sunday after Easter 2012 The name “Extreme Unction” means the “last anointing,” because this sacrament is only given when the danger of death is imminent. It is in our last moments that the devil has his final chance to strike out at God by tempting us to sin. Oftentimes this sacrament provides health to the body in addition to its spiritual aids.
Easter is the guarantee of the resurrection of all the just. The preternatural qualities possessed by the glorified bodies of the just at the end of time will include impassibility, subtlety, agility, and clarity. #20120429V
Feast of St. Joseph 2012 In the Hypostatic Union of Jesus Christ, He possessed no human personality, and because of this, His human nature is transcendent and universal. In a sense all our human natures are found in His. St. Joseph, who was chosen to be the father and protector of Our Lord’s Body on Earth, is a true father to the Mystical Body of Christ – our father. When a boy comes into his manhood, he realizes an inherent responsibility to be a protector of those around him, especially the most needy. A true man must possess both strength and compassion and St. Joseph is the perfect exemplar of these manly virtues. We frequently remember the sorrows of the Blessed Mother, but we neglect to remember how much St. Joseph sacrificed and suffered in the care of the Holy Family. The age when the whole Church will recognize the greatness and authority of this Patron of the Universal Church is yet to be seen. #20120319
