St. Mark And St. Fidelis

4th Sunday After Easter 2016

Today we are honored to hear Fr. Superior speak to us on the merits of two great saints: St. Mark the Evangelist and St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen.  St Mark is known as the apostle who spoke to the Gentile-Christians whereas St. Peter was known as the Apostle who spoke to the Jewish-Christians.  Each had his own charism for speaking to these groups and St. Mark is noted for being the most succinct in his discourses   His Gospel is considered as being the easiest of the four gospels to read and his writings were meant for us, the Gentiles.  St. Fidelis, a Lawyer who became a Capuchin Monk, is known for his strong dislike for the lawyers who took advantage of the poor and his abhorrence of sloth, as he was always at work keeping busy with the tasks at hand.

Virtue of Virtues

3rd Sunday after Easter

After explaining why St. George became a popular saint and reading the Epistle and Gospel, Father briefly explains the “little while” of today’s Gospel and then gives a close reading of the Epistle in which St. Peter instructs us on the moral life.   The key is the practice of obedience and meekness which we first must exercise towards ourselves, especially when we get angry at our own failings.

I, Myself, Will Tend My Sheep

2nd Sunday After Easter – Good Shepherd Sunday

Today’s sermon delves into why there is One we call the Good Shepherd who is willing to die for His sheep and also why there are hirelings who abandon the flock in need.  The Introit of today’s Mass clearly invokes Mercy under the Banner of the Good Shepherd who, in fact, gave up His life for His sheep and continues to do so at every Sacrifice of the Mass.  For a further contemplation we are referred to Chapter 34 of the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel, for in it God declares against false shepherds and promises to care for the sheep Himself.

The Paschal Flame Will Never Fail

Easter Sunday Morning Mass 2016

Lumen Christi, intoned by the Celebrant three times with increased vigor as he approached the Altar during the Easter Vigil, is a reminder to us that the Light of Christ will remain with us even in the darkest hour – that period of time between Christ’s Death and His Resurrection.  And He showed this Light to His Blessed Mother, to those at the cross and to the many of the faithful so as to confirm their Faith and leave no room for discouragement – that indeed, they might spread the Good News to all nations.  Will we spread the Good News despite the efforts of many who would dispel it in our times?

Meditation On The Resurrection

Easter Vigil 2016

What does it mean for us to say: Christ rose from the dead?  It means that He finally and once and for all overcame Death and gave us a hope for our own resurrection if we stay true to His words.  This awesome act of the Son of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, is the most profound and stupendous act in all of human history and the symbols of the Fire, Paschal Candle, Holy Water that He left us are meant to give us a glimpse of the compassion Jesus has for us as we travel the road set for us when He said to His disciples: “I will not leave you orphans.”  It is important also that we remember the large number of people who give testimony to this Event – that it was not just a story or fable of some kind but that it really happened.

Help Us Do Our Duty

5th Sunday after Easter 2015
The Oration of this Mass asks that God bless all those who are humble and to teach us how to think correctly.  We must be humble if we wish to correct our lives.  Humility allows us to hear corrections and take them to heart.  This Epistle was written by the cousin and friend of Our Lord, St. James.  Even the enemies recognized the holiness of this saint.  St. James tells us that we need more than faith alone to be saved and instructs us on the importance of honesty.  The most common vice contrary to honesty, is dishonesty to oneself.  Every time we sin, we tell ourselves a lie.  We must do our duty to be saved.

Distinguishing Truth From Error

4th Sunday after Easter 2015
Why is the month of May dedicated to the Blessed Mother?  The practice began by the efforts of a Jesuit priest of the 18th century in Rome, who dedicated the youth of his time to the Virgin Mary.  By devoutly reciting the Rosary during this month we will remain under her protection as well.  The instruction of this Epistle urges the practice of the great virtue of patience to combat unjust anger.  The virtues and gifts of the Holy Ghost which we possess allow us to hear the word of God and to recognize the false teachings of the world.  We want to express our faith in the Resurrection and assert our trust.

The Christian Worker

1st Friday Conference May 2015 (Part 2)
Why did Christ choose to be the Son of a worker?  St. Joseph’s vocation represents someone who changes the world, because in using the materials of the world he symbolically transforms it.  A Catholic should be familiar with the definition of Capitalism, Social Darwinism, Prosperity Theology, Fascism, Socialism, Marxism, and Existentialism.  The true Christian view stands opposed to these philosophies, because it teaches that man is judged not simply by his work but by the quality of his character.  Even small works have value if they are done with great love for God.  “Whatever you do in word or work, do all in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”
