Love Is Life Or Death

This week is the feast of All Saints which honors God in His heroic examples of sanctifying power.  Today is the feast of Christ the King which was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to combat secularism and to re-assert God’s rights in modern society which have been denied.  Christ is King in His divinity and in His humanity through the grace of union, headship, priesthood and conquest on the Cross.  He established His Church with rights to teach, rule and sanctify.  We pray daily in the Lord’s Prayer “Thy Kingdom Come”.

Pray Like The Publican

10th Sunday after Pentecost 2019
The Church wants us to recall the special gifts given to it in the early days to help the spread of the Faith.  The Holy Ghost continues to give us graces today.  In the Gospel we are reminded about praying with humility as the publican did.  We should avoid the proud attitude of the pharisee.  The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary should help us foster devotion to our Heavenly Mother under this title which is so closely tied to the Sacred Heart of her divine Son.

Love Of God And Neighbor

5th Sunday after Pentecost 2019
The Church begins our sanctification now with the reminder that our love of God is shown by our love of our neighbor.  This is so important that Our Lord instructs us to delay even prayer and public worship so we can first reconcile with our brother when necessary.  How we do this requires prayer, reception of the sacraments and a generous response to the inspirations of the Holy Ghost.  By this we turn our hearts and affections from this world to the invisible treasures of heaven.

Long To See The Trinity

Trinity Sunday 2019
The Sign of the Cross is the signature action of Catholics which expresses our faith in the Blessed Trinity.  This feast enhances the importance of this supernatural mystery which is remembered at every Sunday Mass.  God has revealed this secret of His life which teaches us that in God there are Three Divine Persons: Father, Son and Holy Ghost.  References to this doctrine can be found in the Old Testament and more explicitly in the New.  Created grace is our share in God’s Trinitarian life which we long to enjoy in heaven one day.

Triumph Tinged With Sorrow

The sacramental of the palm is a sign of victory and means of grace.  Use it and the liturgy to fight off the devil who tries to separate us from the Mass and its ministers.  Christ planned His triumphant procession into Jerusalem, the Holy City, to proclaim His Kingship clearly.  This was so evident that He was condemned later in the week for being the King of the Jews.  Today is the original feast of Christ the King but because of the note of sorrow the new feast was instituted.  The entire Holy Week is encapsulated in today’s Mass and ceremonies.

Be Hopeful

2nd Sunday in Lent
St. Paul is preaching to people of his time who were being dragged down by the pagans, mostly by sins of impurity.  In visions, the saints have seen children and young adults in Hell for sins of impurity so we must combat this.  The Transfiguration is when Christ allowed His divinity to shine forth through His humanity.  This was to strengthen the apostles for the trials ahead.  We take the same encouragement for the rest of Lent.

His Kingdom Of Love

Feast Of Christ The King 2018
After a preview of All Saints and All Souls Days, the sermon proper for the feast of Christ the King begins after the Epistle and Gospel.  Pope Pius XI established the feast in 1925 to counter the secularism that permeates our society.  After an examination of the causes leading up to our modern errors we are given the teaching on the social kingdom of Christ which frees us from the shackles of sin.  Our Lord has given us a kingdom of peace, unity, holiness and above all love.  We must love in return and not despise His love.

We Are The Coin Of Tribute

22nd Sunday after Pentecost 2018
In the Epistle for the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost St. Paul gives us consoling words from his place of imprisonment.  God will see the good work He has begun in us reach its perfection. On our part we need to pray for final perseverance.  In the Gospel Christ is not making a political statement as much as one of prioritizing our concerns – starting with God in the first place.  This hierarchy of values will guide us in our daily lives and especially assist us when voting.

God Is Love

Trinity Sunday 2018
The beautiful feast of the Blessed Trinity dates from the fourteenth century and not from the Apostles.  The importance of a special celebration in honor of this most fundamental revelation of the Christian dispensation was increased through the centuries by heresies like Arianism.  Although we can come to the knowledge of the truth and reason to the reality of the existence of God we can never figure out that God is Three in One.  This doctrine is so sacred that it was reserved to the Son of God to reveal it while He walked on earth.  We must love the God of love in return.

Confession, Contrition, Satisfaction

2nd Sunday in Lent 2018
During Lent it is important to stir up sorrow for our sins and to receive the Sacrament of Penance.  The older form for the penitent to use in the confessional expressed aspects of this beautiful sacrament that we should appreciate.  If received well,  this sacrament can even make us holier than just before we sinned, for example we have St. Peter.  The Gospel for this Sunday is about the Transfiguration and is meant to encourage us, as it did the Apostles, for the struggles we must face in the days ahead.
