The Language of Lent

Penance has a variety of meanings.  It refers to the infused virtue that inclines a person to hate his faults, the sacrament of penance, and the works we perform to make up for our sins.  Mortification refers to works which put to death evil inclinations.  Propitiation is an act by which someone who has been offended is now appeased.  The Mass and our prayers are great works of propitiation.  When we make satisfaction, we punish ourselves for our sins.  Our sufferings may be offered to God as a form of satisfaction.  Atonement refers to the union with God which is achieved when our sins are expiated or wiped away.  This is the Sunday of the Golden Rose, on which the pope would take a golden rose and give it to a privileged monarch, who was favored by the pope.  The rose is seen as a foretaste of the happiness of Heaven.

Ask In His Name

All Catholics bow their heads in reverence when they hear the name of Jesus because it is the name of God.  It is only in the name of Jesus that we will be saved.  When St. Peter says that “God the Father raised His Son from the dead,” he is simply expressing the Trinitarian doctrine.  We must pray that we are given the virtue of supernatural prudence.  We must pray the Rosary daily – that prayer which is responsible for so many miracles.  In the Old Testament the Hebrews could not even utter God’s name, so we must never take the name of God in vain.  His very name is a prayer.

The Depths of Christ’s Humility

Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.  If we want to know how much God loves us, all we need do is think of the Incarnation.  In all humility the Son of God bridged the infinite gap between God and man.  The closer we come to God the more we realize we are the lowest of all beings.  Pride tells a lie, which is why God answers the prayers of the humble.  This day celebrates the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin and the Circumcision of Our Lord.  As we enter a new year, we confide our past faults to God’s mercy and live in the present.  We must be recollected and prayerful, and we must see reality as it is – even if it is unpleasant.  This is the way to peace and happiness.

He Rules Our Souls

Because the feast of the Nativity is so important, the Church celebrates throughout its octave, each day of which emphasizes different aspects of the Nativity.  We are given a great example of the staunch defense of the Faith on the feast of St. Stephen.  We are shown Our Lord as an infant, how He is seemingly helpless and most deserving of our love.  It is a privilege and honor to assist at the true Mass.  When we receive the Sanctifying Grace the Trinity is active in our souls.  The Holy Spirit establishes His home within us, and we are called to be His faithful children.

The Everlasting Effect of Christmas

On this day the Son of God, after taking to Himself a human nature, entered the world.  The Virginal Birth is the cornerstone of this feast.  The Blessed Mother was virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ, and remained so perpetually.  We are Christians not because we admire Jesus Christ, but because we recognize Him as our God.  God entered the world and changed the destiny of the whole human race.  Despite all the world seems to offer, it ultimately only gives sadness and fear.  However, Christmas is the one day that brings a lasting joy to man, because it offers us true hope.  We pray that the joy of the manger remains forever in our hearts.

The Smile Of The Universe

There are four marks of the true Church: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.  However, the most appealing mark is holiness.  The stories of the saints are innumerable and are a beacon of light to the world.  This is the feast which celebrates the holiness of the Church.  A saint is one who has practiced heroic virtue.  We must thank God for the saints and every detail of their lives.  We must be inspired by these great models of a holy life.  We must study how to reach Heaven.  Heaven is wide open today to offer us a vision of our goal.

The King Of Saints

The purpose of human history is for the creation of saints.  The reason for all human existence is to reach the final end of sanctification.  The feast of Christ the King was instituted to combat secularism.  God is the efficient cause of everything, and because of this He owns everything.  There is a communal side to all men, but we are not only bonded to one another, we are bound to God.  Christ in His human nature is intimately united to the human race, and even more so after we are baptized.  God wants to be loved, and it is our obligation to do so.

Our Immovable Cross

The object which was deigned from all eternity to be the instrument of our redemption, an instrument of torture and death, is the holy sign venerated today.  The Cross of Christ should stand immovable in our souls.  On this day we celebrate the victory of the Cross over all the enemies of the Church.  St. Helena led an expedition to the Holy Land and miraculously discovered the True Cross.  History has shown that God will not be defeated.  The Sign of the Cross is a proclamation of our Faith.  It is through this sign of death that we are given life.

Gratitude: The Unknown Virtue

With the approach of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows we are reminded of Christ’s final gift to us from the Cross.  As we prepare to resume catechism classes it is important for parents to realize their serious obligation to train their children for heaven.  Our Lady’s 30 days are ending soon so we need fervor this week.  In the Gospel we learn the power of faith in the healing of the lepers but it is supernatural faith which is a theological virtue and can only be given by God.  Christ also teaches us about a part of the virtue of justice which few appreciate and even less practice and that is being thankful to God for the favors He grants us and showing gratitude to others for their kindness and charity towards us.

Fear And Encouragement

We are given tremendous encouragements in this Mass.  Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it is that fear which we are taught today.  Even as the elect, we can still be lost, but God is faithful and will not abandon us.  Just as Christ wept over the city of Jerusalem, we feel sorrow for those who have turned away from God and will endure His just punishments.  We are all soldiers of Christ who must remain strong and continue to pray for our enemies.
