1st Sunday of Advent 2015

At the beginning of the new liturgical year, we are reminded of many great truths.  Advent is a time of preparation.  God had His Chosen People wait in anticipation of His first coming in mercy, and He has His chosen people once again waiting for His return in glory.  Our Lord, as the great Pontiff, bridges the gap between the Creator and the creature, between the infinite and the finite, in His Incarnation.  With the beginning of the liturgical year, our journey to become more Christlike is renewed once more.  This progressive incorporation into Christ can only be accomplished through participation in the Mass, devout reception of the sacraments, and unceasing prayer.

The Remains of Sin

All Souls Day 2015

Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men.  In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us.  We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell.  Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.  All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them.  If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God.

We Must Desire Sanctity

All Saints Day 2015
Today we rejoice because this is the day on which the Church celebrates all her children who have overcome the world.  In the process by which a saint is canonized, it must be determined that they expressed nothing contrary to faith and morals, and that they practiced virtue in a heroic way.  After this, the Church waits for God to affirm the individual’s sanctity by miracles attributed to their intercession.  It is not enough for a Catholic merely to recite the Creed, he must believe it and practice it.  For every walk of life, there is a saint who has lived it as an example to follow.  Today we adore God as we honor His saints, and desire to make the little sacrifices necessary on our road to holiness.

The Master Of The Universe

All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven.  We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity.  The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives.  We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.

Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration.  Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations.  He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power.  Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all.

The Kingdom of the Cross

We are in a battle between those who fight for the Holy Cross and those who oppose it. This day commemorates historical events which are tied to the Cross of Christ, including the conquest of Emperor Constantine, the discovery of the Cross by St. Helena, and its rescue by Emperor Heraclius from the infidel Persians. In the ancient world, the cross was a sign of shame and torture, but at the end of time it will appear in the sky as the sign of salvation to the faithful and conquest of the powers of evil.

Deliver Us from Pride

When we see the moral attacks on society, and especially on the sacrament of Matrimony, it should be a wake-up call for all of us. We should strive to pray better and attend Mass more frequently when we witness how dire is our situation.

This Mass is given to us to counteract pride. Our Lord is drawn to the humble and repulsed by the proud, just as all of us are. God must give us grace to move us to perform a good action, He must give us grace to sustain us in doing what is right, and a grace to bring the good work to completion. This is how utterly dependent we are on His continuous help.

Our Heavenly Father’s Care

St. Raymond Nonnatus is celebrated this week by the Church, and presented to us as an example of generosity and love of neighbor that we are all called to imitate.  If God created you, how much easier is it for Him to provide your material needs.  Our Father in Heaven is truly our Father, more than even our biological father, because He has given us a share in his life.  Our sanctification should be the number one priority in our lives.  We are aided in avoiding sin and striving for virtue when we recall the remorse of the damned.  The lost souls have great remorse for three reasons: for the shortness of their sin, how easily they could have changed their lives, and their knowledge of the happiness of the saints.  We must spend our life preparing for our death.

The Divine Power Of Faith

The body of doctrines that all Catholics must believe is called Objective Faith, which is distinct from the virtue of faith.  This virtue gives us the ability to ascent with the mind and adhere with the will to all the truths revealed by our Divine Savior.  We do not appreciate the great privilege we have been given through faith.  It is an act of the greatest love of God for Him to share the mysteries of His life so that we might believe in them.  The gift of faith is offered to even the worst among us.  The Gospel today displays the great power of intercession, because it was due to the friends of the deaf and dumb man that he obtained his cure.  This teaches us to pray perseveringly for the conversion of our neighbor.

The Results of Pride

The Gospel for this Mass warns us of the catastrophic results of pride.  Firstly, God does not hear the prayers of the proud man.  Secondly, pride leads to hatred of God and neighbor, due to our inordinate love of ourselves.  We should think often of our death and judgment, especially when we are tempted to the sin of pride.  How beautiful it is to see someone accept humiliation with a smile.  Everything that happens to us comes from God.  Even the evil in the world is permitted by Him for our good.  Our Lord endured humiliation to serve as an example for us to follow.

All Is Fulfilled

Feast of The Precious Blood 2015
When Christ said the words, “It is consummated,” He expressed the fact that His entire life on Earth had led to this one moment in which all was fulfilled.  The culmination of His mission was the Redemption of the human race.  The devil never tempts a soul as much as at the moment when a man is dying.  This is why we constantly pray for final perseverance.  Christ died with full knowledge and full control of His senses.  The feast was instituted by Pope Pius IX in response to the attacks of Freemasonry.  This is a feast for our times, because we fight the same enemy today.
