Reading the lives of the saints reminds us that we too can become saints. Lent is about to begin, and we should be looking for ways to pray, fast, and give. We should go to Mass more often, pray the Rosary daily, and practice spiritual reading to learn about the God we wish to love.
We have been under the guidance of St. Paul, and he has told us that we are called to conquer ourselves. The only thing that counts in the end is sanctifying grace and our sanctification. Charity is the motive for everything we do during this season. This week’s great patriarch is Abraham, the patriarch of faith, because coupled with our charity we must believe. If we live correctly this Lent, we will be able to truly mean what we say when renewing our baptismal vows this Easter.

My Grace Is Sufficient For Thee

Catholics should familiarize themselves with the lives of great saints like St. John of Matha, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Apollonia, St. Scholastica, and St. Valentine.
The readings from the Divine Office over the last week teach us about Original Sin, while this week’s focus on Actual Sin.  This Sunday we are called to make an examination of conscience.  In today’s Epistle St. Paul is not boasting; he is simply establishing his credentials as a true Apostle and follower of Christ.  He was only able to accomplish these deeds by God’s help.  Our Lord always gives us sufficient graces to resist temptations as well as graces to call back those who have already fallen into sin.

His First Offering

Feast of the Purification 2026
The season of Septuagesima gives us a reason to examine our consciences.  We learn that God created all things good, including man, but through the devil Adam fell, and sin was introduced to the world.  Grace will not work in us if our concupiscence remains untamed.

Because the womb of the Immaculate Mother was never opened and no blood was shed at the Nativity, she was exempt from the law of purification.  It was due to her humility and desire to be united with sinners that she underwent this ceremony.  When one becomes a parent, he or she is a caretaker of the child, but that child still belongs to God.  Parents are bound to love their children as God does, not to indulge their every desire.  This day the Virgin Mary became our Sorrowful Mother in anticipation of her suffering at the foot of the Cross.  Just as the Temple of old could not be entered without first offering sacrifice, we cannot enter Heaven without the sacrifice of Christ which opens its gates to us.

Give All To Obtain All

Septuagesima Sunday 2026
The season of Septuagesima begins roughly 70 days before Easter.  Through the Nativity season we witnessed the Son of God physically and literally come to Earth to save His children.  Now, God will lift us up by His divine power.  We have the privilege to reform our lives; we have the ability to become holy.  It is a struggle we must all pass through to reach Heaven.  Our God already won the prize which St. Paul refers to, yet we must still run the race on the road to Heaven.  We are called to change this season.  The lukewarm will become fervent, the fervent will become perfect, the perfect will begin to practice heroic virtue.

Love for Our Enemy

3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2026
Those who refuse to forgive the offenses they have received will not be heard when they ask God to have mercy on them.  Christ told us that we must love our neighbor as He has loved us.  We should not allow ourselves to become bitter but should have pity for, and even empathize with, those people of the world who are so lost and confused.  St. Paul tells us that we must feed our enemies, and if we are not able to do this materially, we must do so spiritually.  Those who live a good Catholic life experience the joy and peace of a good conscience and have a desire to bring that lasting peace and joy to their neighbor in the world.  Untold numberers of souls have been saved by Catholics who truly love their enemies.

Trade Nothing and Gain All

In today’s Epistle, St. Paul teaches us about the greatest of the theological virtues.  In Heaven there is no need for faith nor hope, but charity will last for all eternity.  We are told by the Church Fathers that the blindness of the man in this Gospel represents our own blindness, and we too should cry out today for Christ’s help.  The work we put into any effort in life, apart from that which aids in the salvation of our souls, will eventually be taken away from us.  The saints realized that they could trade those things that have no value here on Earth to gain everything for all eternity.  Not only the one who desires riches, but also those who work tirelessly just to survive, must not lose perspective.  We should never care for sustaining our temporal lives so much that we risk losing our eternal life.  Today we come to the end of this season of examination of conscience.  We ask that God open our eyes and give us true sight, so that in seeing God we may love Him, and in seeing ourselves we may cease to love ourselves.

We Must Be The Fertile Ground

The season of Septuagesima is a very ancient season of the liturgical year.  The color violet reminds us to examine our consciences and reflect on our lives.  In this season, the Divine Office calls to mind the history of man’s creation and fall, and the Gospel last week instructed us that it is never too late to labor for Christ and gain Heaven.

In today’s Epistle, St. Paul gives his credentials to the gentiles to convince them of his authority as a true minister of Christ, yet all he accomplished was made possible only by the grace of God.  In the Gospel of St. Luke, Our Lord tells us to possess a good heart so that the word of God might bear fruit in our souls.

Her First Great Sorrow

Feast of the Purification 2025
This feast marks the end of the Nativity and Epiphany seasons. Today we remember both the purification of the Blessed Virgin and the presentation of Our Lord in the temple. The Mother of God was exempt from the legal requirement of purification, however she still submitted to the law due to her humility and desire to be united to sinners. In the Old Law, parents were required to present their first-born son in the temple and to offer five shekels in order to “buy back” the child who was being loaned to them for a time by God. This should remind all parents that your children are not yours but belong to God first. St. Simeon prophesied that Our Lady’s life would be filled with sorrow. This is how she merited the title of Queen of Martyrs and Mater Dolorosa.

Blessed candles, one of the great sacramentals of the Church, are blessed today in the ceremony which has existed from the earliest days of the Church.

Cry Out to God!

Abraham is our patron today.  His willingness to sacrifice his only begotten son was a type of the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  In today’s Gospel, the Apostles did not understand Our Lord’s words.  To remove any doubts, Jesus performed the miracle of curing the blind man, demonstrating His divine power.  We also must cry out as this blind man did.  We need God to cure our blindness of heart and mind.  Our good works become void if they are not for the love of God.  Our intentions must be pure.  Today’s Epistle is a great aid to meditation and will help us obtain divine charity.

The Call To Sanctity

St. Gregory tells us that this Gospel needs no explanation, because Our Lord explained it Himself.  We must ask ourselves, are we the “good ground” or are we the “bad ground”?  It is a dogma of our Faith that everyone, without discrimination, is given the chance to be saved.  If we are saved, God saves us; if we are lost, we have lost ourselves.  St. Paul teaches us in his Epistle to follow his example.  He encourages us to abandon our sins, and become great saints, willing to suffer for Christ.  It is essential that we practice mental prayer and spiritual reading and think of God frequently throughout the day.  Without these helps it is difficult to be saved.
