This week has the beautiful feasts of St. Dominic, Our Lady of the Snows, the Transfiguration and St. John Vianney.  Man by nature has the need to be religious and bind himself to that which is greater, namely God the Creator.  For Catholics this is enhanced as we are bound to God our Father.  For these reasons, and because of God’s own commandment, we must worship Him publicly and should not permit anything to prevent us from attending Mass on Sundays and Holydays of obligation.  Real men sacrifice all for family, and are willing to do the same for Almighty God.  St. Augustine said it famously, “Lord, you have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”

The Veiling Ceremony

This week we have the feasts of St. Mary Magdalen, St. James the Greater and St. Anne.  This Mass repeats Holy Week for us and its sacraments of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.  Today is also the veiling day for one of the Carmelite Sisters which is rare in our world.  The veil is the sign of consecration to Our Lord as the true Spouse of souls and the reserving of the look of the countenance to Him alone.  Do not deny Jesus anything because no amount of generosity on our part can outdo that of the Savior.  All the elements of this beautiful ceremony express the joy, peace, sacrifice and eternal reward that a contemplative vocation embodies.

Our Mediator To God

The Feast Of Saints Peter & Paul 2014
The gates of hell will not prevail against the Church because Christ protects it and has built it on the rock of St. Peter.  We know much about St. Peter from the Gospels and about St. Paul from the Acts and the Epistles.  They mirrored Christ.  St. Peter is highlighted by his conversion which drew Our Lord to his humility and sincerity.  St. Peter as Vicar of Christ on earth is the the means of our relationship with God.  Saints Peter and Paul are models of the priesthood and religious life.  Vocations should be inspired by this feast to follow their example.  St. Ignatius says that we should presume to be a priest unless told by competent guides that it is not for us.  All are called to the priesthood and/or religious life.

Come To The Feast

2nd Sunday after Pentecost 2014
This Sunday sets the tone for the rest of the year.  The liturgical color of this season after Pentecost is green, which represents hope.  The Mass is filled with all the tools necessary to make us saints.  Just as we read the Gospel account, we too receive invitations from God and we can choose to ignore them if we wish.  This Mass is for all of us: the poor, the lame, the blind.  We must have a great fear and a great love of the Holy Name.

Giver Of Life

Pentecost Sunday 2014
The Father is the Unbegotten, the Son is the Only-begotten, and the Holy Ghost is the unifying and personal Love which unites both the Father and the Son.  The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Unction, the Finger of the Right Hand of God, and the Giver of Life.  Today is the birthday of the Church and we see all of Christianity spring from the graces the Holy Ghost gives to the Church.  There is one Faith and there is one Lord.

Niceness vs. Sanctity

Melchisedech was a priest, prophet and king so his life is a perfect foreshadowing of Christ.  The only record in the Old Testament of a sacrifice of bread and wine was offered by him.  St. Norbert lived a sinful life far from God but miraculously converted.  This saint is a beautiful example of great generosity of soul.  Saints are not “nice.”  We can be very misled by judging souls by externals.  It is not the niceness of a person and not even his knowledge that determines the sanctity of his soul.  It is the love of God which makes the difference.

Everlasting Pleasure

St. Peter reminds us in the Epistle for today that our obligation is to become saints.  Our Lord compares our relationship with Him to the relationship between Him and His Father.  The world mistakenly teaches that life is all about pleasure and worldly goals.  We either think as God thinks or as the world does.  If we seek the everlasting pleasure of Heaven, rather than the passing pleasures of this life, God will begin to reward us even now.

Our sins are an infinite offense, because they offend an infinite God and although we cannot make adequate reparation, Our Lord has still instructed us to do penance.  This penance can only be performed with God’s supernatural help of grace.  We are guided by the Church throughout Lent and given the weapons of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  When we use these weapons well, Lent becomes the best time of the year.  It is the time when we are preparing for our heavenly delights.

Conversion of Life

We are reminded at this Mass that we are in need of a conversion of life.  However, since knowledge does not equal virtue, so we must place ourselves in a retreat from the world in order to accomplish this goal.  We must have a true desire to convert ourselves and we must pray earnestly.  Perseverance in prayer is our only assurance of salvation, but it must be with all our hearts.  We are all called to sanctity, and there is no better time to follow the examples of the saints that came before us.
