2nd Sunday After Easter – Good Shepherd Sunday

Today’s sermon delves into why there is One we call the Good Shepherd who is willing to die for His sheep and also why there are hirelings who abandon the flock in need.  The Introit of today’s Mass clearly invokes Mercy under the Banner of the Good Shepherd who, in fact, gave up His life for His sheep and continues to do so at every Sacrifice of the Mass.  For a further contemplation we are referred to Chapter 34 of the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel, for in it God declares against false shepherds and promises to care for the sheep Himself.

Lumen Christi, intoned by the Celebrant three times with increased vigor as he approached the Altar during the Easter Vigil, is a reminder to us that the Light of Christ will remain with us even in the darkest hour – that period of time between Christ’s Death and His Resurrection.  And He showed this Light to His Blessed Mother, to those at the cross and to the many of the faithful so as to confirm their Faith and leave no room for discouragement – that indeed, they might spread the Good News to all nations.  Will we spread the Good News despite the efforts of many who would dispel it in our times?

The Triumph of the New Eve

Although the Blessed Mother was given the unique privilege of being preserved from Original Sin, this does not mean that she was not redeemed.  It simply means that she was redeemed in a more perfect, anticipatory manner.  She was conceived with an initial plenitude of grace, yet her share in God’s life continually increased in her until she was taken back to Heaven.  Adam was made God-like with the gift of Sanctifying Grace and mankind was meant to remain in perfect harmony with the Divine.  Because Adam was made master of creation, he was given a sign to show his subordination to God – the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  The devil brought evil into the world by convincing Eve to tempt Adam.  We see in the book of Genesis how quick God is to offer mercy after we fall.  Immediately after the sin of Adam was revealed, God promised a Savior who would come through the new Eve, the woman never touched by sin.

The Secret To Sanctity

When Our Lord raised the son of the widow of Naim to life, the miracle was instantaneous, with the child restored as if he were simply waking from sleep.  As Christians we know that all suffering is sent for a reason, and sometimes the greatest joys come from times of sorrow.

The Epistle for this Mass speaks about fraternal correction, a teaching so often misunderstood by Catholics.  Remember Our Lord describes himself as meek and humble of heart.  The virtue of meekness is related to clemency, which gives us the ability to forgive easily insults.  A man who is humble recognizes what he is of himself.  This is what made the saints lowly as the dust.  Pride is the most deceptive of all vices, even disguising itself as humility.  We should be well instructed about this vice so we may recognize it better and more effectively uproot it from our souls.

The Thirteenth Apostle

St. Mary Magdalene is one of the only saints given the title of “Penitent.”  After living a life of great impurity, she became one of the most dedicated disciples of Our Lord.  She is sometimes called “The Thirteenth Apostle” because of the great privileges she received in witnessing the death of Christ and announcing His Resurrection.  When she heard Our Lord call her name after He had risen, she fell at His feet and embraced Him, in a gesture which implied her unwillingness to lose Him again.  She was later arrested and sent off in a boat without oars, so that she and her companions might die at sea, but she was miraculously carried to the south of France where she lived in contemplation of God to the end of her days.

Distinguishing Truth From Error

Why is the month of May dedicated to the Blessed Mother?  The practice began by the efforts of a Jesuit priest of the 18th century in Rome, who dedicated the youth of his time to the Virgin Mary.  By devoutly reciting the Rosary during this month we will remain under her protection as well.  The instruction of this Epistle urges the practice of the great virtue of patience to combat unjust anger.  The virtues and gifts of the Holy Ghost which we possess allow us to hear the word of God and to recognize the false teachings of the world.  We want to express our faith in the Resurrection and assert our trust.

The Lasting Joy of Faith

Today’s Epistle tells us of the importance of good example.  Many more conversions are made by good example than by preaching.  The “little while” during which the disciples would not see Christ described His passion, death, and descent into limbo.  The disciples were so attached to Our Lord that it was like death for them to be separated from Him.  After this “little while” in the tomb Christ predicted that He would rise again and would be seen by His followers once more.  Faith is a supernatural power that permits us to ascent with the mind and embrace with the will everything God has revealed, simply because He says so.  The fact of the Resurrection gives assurance to our faith and fills us with lasting joy.

The Sun of Justice Rises

We call this day Sunday because the early English-speaking Christians kept the pagan name of the day to honor the “Sun of Justice” Who has risen.  This is common practice of Catholicism, to Christianize every culture.  Easter Sunday is the day of the Light of the Sun of Justice.  We are more sons of God then even sons of our parents.  Because we have a share in God’s life, our only desire should be to obtain Heaven. Our three infallible Witnesses are in Heaven Who give testimony of the truth that Christ is both God and man.

The Only Acceptable Worship

We are privileged to be a part of the unbroken history of this liturgy. Catholic worship is more than merely a compilation of rituals. It is a true reliving of the past. Because of our fallen nature, and the sins we commit, we are not placed in friendship with God but in enmity with Him. Merely human worship, therefore, does not suffice in pleasing God. There is only one worship that is acceptable to Him and that is the worship of His Divine Son. Every act of the Divine Son is infinitely holy. In the instant when His death on the cross took place, the destiny of the universe was changed, and the true Promised Land of Heaven was opened to us.
