Septuagesima Sunday 2026
The season of Septuagesima begins roughly 70 days before Easter.  Through the Nativity season we witnessed the Son of God physically and literally come to Earth to save His children.  Now, God will lift us up by His divine power.  We have the privilege to reform our lives; we have the ability to become holy.  It is a struggle we must all pass through to reach Heaven.  Our God already won the prize which St. Paul refers to, yet we must still run the race on the road to Heaven.  We are called to change this season.  The lukewarm will become fervent, the fervent will become perfect, the perfect will begin to practice heroic virtue.

Holy Anticipation

Sermon on the 4th Sunday of Advent 2025
Although he is not commemorated when his feast falls on a Sunday, St. Thomas the Apostle is a great saint who should be remembered by all Catholics. Because of his doubt, we were all given a proof of the bodily Resurrection of Our Lord. To this day we repeat his beautiful words: “My Lord and my God!”
This day is all about sorrow for our sins and preparation of the coming of Christ. In the early years of the Church, the Christians would gather in the ancient St. Peter’s Basilica for a vigil Mass. We pray just as the early Catholics that we will remain as faithful as possible during these last days of preparation. After asking for forgiveness for our sins, with a contrite heart, we should not think of ourselves anymore but fix our attention on God alone.

The Spiritual Crusade

Gaudete Sunday – This day, which expresses a mitigated joy in the midst of suffering, has a more profound meaning for us now than ever before.  To suffer joyfully with Christ is truly what it means to be a Christian.  We have been given a wonderful example of this self-sacrificing love in Maria de la Luz who courageously stood against the enemies of the Church and willingly sacrificed her life for Our Lord.  In our current day, we must face persecution with the same steadfast spirit, and use every attack as a greater impetus to strive for sanctity.

The Church’s Glorious Crown

All Saints Day 2025
By instituting this Holy Day of Obligation, Pope Urban IV wished to supply for any deficiencies in the honor offered to the saints throughout the year.  Christ the King, Who has made all the saints, is celebrated immediately before the Church Triumphant.  This beautiful Mass is like entering the courts of Heaven.  The Epistle for this Mass is frightening, but those who strive to follow God throughout their lives have nothing to fear.  The eight beatitudes are the qualities of those who truly love Our Lord.  We have them inscribed on the walls of the chapel along with many statues of the saints to inspire and encourage us.  On this day, we participate in the Communion of Saints by praying to our friends in Heaven.  Our struggles in this life only last a moment, and they will be replaced by the rewards of a joyful eternity.

The autobiography of St. Thérèse is one of the most enjoyable books to read in our modern times.  Innumerable miracles have been granted to the faithful through her intercession.

In today’s Gospel, Our Lord tells us to sit in the lowest place at the table, not to win the honor of all present, but due to an honest estimation of what we deserve.  Those who live in humility here on Earth will one day obtain Heaven, the higher place at the table.  Although God and all the saints in Heaven want us to be saved, some will be lost because they lack the great desire necessary.  Heaven must be the one thing in life we desire.  Everything else is incidental.  This Sunday is all about our holiness of life, and if we make up our minds, we could begin to live a holy life starting now.  At every Mass we are called to lift up our hearts to Heaven, now is the hour for us to do so.

Knowledge of Self

St. Paul corrected the Corinthians who doubted the General Resurrection.  Not only was the Resurrection of Our Lord a type of our own, but without this dogma, our “faith is vain.”  It was St. Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, who brought the Faith to the non-Jewish world.  Yet, despite all he did for the Church, he knew himself to be the least of the Apostles.  With the help of a daily examination of conscience and true self-knowledge, we too will appreciate that all the good we possess and all we accomplish in this life is due to God’s grace.  Through our examination of conscience, God allows us to see ourselves as we really are, which prepares our path to perfection.  In the words of St. Augustine, “This is the very perfection of a man, to find out his own imperfections.”

Hail Mary, Full of Love

Feast of the Assumption 2025
In the Epistle for today’s feast, the applied sense of Scripture is used to connect Judith’s conquest over the prince of the Hebrew’s enemies in the Old Testament to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s victory over the Prince of Darkness.  The passive word Assumption is used to express the direct action of the Trinity on Our Lady in bringing her, body and soul, into Heaven.  One can only imagine the great joy in Heaven at the entrance of its Queen.  In the Hail Mary we are meant to greet the Holy Virgin with fervor and love.  Divine Charity, which we possess in Sanctifying Grace, far surpasses the greatest and most noble of human love.  The intensity of this Divine Love in the Blessed Mother is unimaginable, and it transformed even her smallest works into actions warranting the greatest merit.  What our Savior desires most from us is that we love Him in return.

To Bear Our Fruit in Due Season

The main theme of this Mass is the tree and the fruit it bears.  When we practice good works, we bear good fruit and edify our neighbor, but if we practice evil, we bear bad fruit and scandalize our neighbor.  Our Lord warns us to beware of false prophets and tells us to judge them by their fruits.  Immodesty among Catholics offends the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is a temptation to our neighbor, so we must strive to remain always modest, especially during the heat of summer.  It is important for all Catholics to read the lives of the saints so we might imitate their virtues and become “the tree planted beside the water, which bears fruit in due season.”

A Warning for Vocations

In today’s Epistle, St Paul speaks of the curse placed on all creation due to the fall of Adam.  All creatures desire to be freed of this curse.  With great hope, we look forward to the day when our bodies will be glorified and our adoption as sons of God complete.

The initial call of St. Peter in the Gospel account for today teaches us valuable lessons about the pursuit of a vocation.  The devil will do everything in his power to prevent a man from becoming a priest.  He frequently tempts the soul to delay his vocation needlessly, to substitute a vocation with a less-perfect life, or to be paralyzed by a feeling of unworthiness.  These temptations, as well as other attacks from the devil, can be expected by all who consider offering their life to God, and it is only through prayer and confident reliance on Our Lord’s assistance that one can persevere towards such a lofty calling.

Priestly Ordinations

During the ordination ceremony, it is as if Heaven is opening as our Divine Savior unites with the ordinands and fuses them to His priestly Nature.  From that moment, the new priests are able to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to renew all the divine mysteries of the Faith through the liturgy, to forgive sin, to govern, to teach, to baptize, to bring souls to Heaven.  The priest is called Father because he provides life to the people and spiritually nourishes them.  The Laity should look at the priest and see the likeness of Christ.  By the physical transformation of the soul through Holy Orders, for all eternity, the priest is now a relative – a brother – of Our Lord.
