No Longer Servants But Friends

Feast of Saints Peter & Paul 2025

Priestly Ordinations

During the ordination ceremony, it is as if Heaven is opening as our Divine Savior unites with the ordinands and fuses them to His priestly Nature.  From that moment, the new priests are able to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to renew all the divine mysteries of the Faith through the liturgy, to forgive sin, to govern, to teach, to baptize, to bring souls to Heaven.  The priest is called Father because he provides life to the people and spiritually nourishes them.  The Laity should look at the priest and see the likeness of Christ.  By the physical transformation of the soul through Holy Orders, for all eternity, the priest is now a relative – a brother – of Our Lord.

The Birthday of the Church

Pentecost Sunday 2025
The Holy Ghost is often referred to as the “forgotten Person of the Trinity.”  However, without Him we would have no Church.  When Our Lord died on the Cross all the merits He won remained within Him, and it was only when He opened the gates of Heaven that all those merits could be shared with us.  All that He won is dispensed to us during the visible reign of the Holy Spirit.  Today the Church made its first physical appearance in the world.  The Apostles gathered with the Virgin Mary in the Upper Room, where the first Mass had been offered, and prayed for nine days in preparation for the coming of the Holy Ghost.  A miraculous wind drew crowds of thousands to the very first church.  The appearance of the tongues of fire expressed the consuming fire of God’s love.  The ultimate gift of the Holy Ghost is for each of us to be filled with the very love God has for Himself.

The Removal of All Doubt

Low Sunday 2025
We must put out of our minds all distractions while we attend the Holy Mass, so that we may focus solely on the Son of God Who is sacrificing Himself before our very eyes.  When God was creating the cosmos, He had the future sacrifice of His Son in mind.  Everything the Son of God did was for love of His Father.  God permitted the sinful doubt of St. Thomas the Apostle to assist in the fulfillment of His plan.  We thank St. Thomas for his doubt because due to it, Our Lord proved His bodily resurrection and removed any doubt from our own hearts.  If any man sincerely looks for the truth and prays to God to help him find it, God will surely give it to Him.  Let us imitate the great saints and martyrs of the past in their desire for salvation and remove everything from our lives which stands between us and Heaven.

I Have Overcome the World

Easter Sunday Morning 2025
Despite what the nonbelievers may say, Our Lord truly and bodily rose from the dead.  Our faith is vain without the Resurrection, because this miracle is the greatest proof that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  Although no one can see the Divinity of Christ, this act shows that He has power over life and death.  Even in the face of these great wonders, just like the Apostles before us, we must still believe.  This great day is dependent on the victory of the Cross.  We are united to our Divine Redeemer in Baptism, and we will be united with Him in our own resurrection.  In this world we have affliction, but we take courage because He has overcome the world.

The Value of Penance

1st Sunday of Lent 2025
We must imitate the example of Our Lord in the face of temptation.  When we are afflicted by evil thoughts we should turn to the powerful defense of Sacred Scripture.  Christ’s victory over the devil in this Gospel foreshadows His ultimate victory on the Cross.  Unless we do penance, we will surely perish.  We should have a thorough understanding of what the word “penance” means.  Lent is a time of joy, when we shake off sin and prepare for Heaven.  This season presents to us God’s mercy and gives us the opportunity to obtain a peaceful conscience.  God in His justice is bound by His very nature to punish sin, but when we punish ourselves with works of penance, even our smallest acts have great value, if they come from the heart.  There are many such acts that every Catholic should know and put into practice during this season.

The Holy Family Provides

Feast of the Holy Family 2025
The Blessed Mother kept the mysteries of Our Lord’s life in her heart, and we should invoke her help whenever we meditate on those mysteries.  Holy Scripture shows St. Joseph to be the clear head of the Holy Family, not by his words but by his actions.  The event recorded in the Gospel took place when Christ was twelve years old, at the time when He became a “Son of the Law.”  By His words Christ makes it evident to the whole world that He knew He was God at every moment of His life.  St. Paul tells us in his Epistle the virtues of the Holy Family which we must imitate and use in examining our consciences.  The father is the head of the family and must be the example of the virtue of religion.  The mother is the heart of the family, who keeps all the spiritual and material needs of the children in her heart.  God has given us parents to assist us in attaining Heaven, and children are called to submit to their parents in holy obedience.  Nothing bad will ever happen to us but that which our loving Father allows.

His Birth in Our Hearts

Christmas Day 2024
Although all three Masses of Christmas refer to the birth of Our Lord in the hearts of mankind through grace, this is the Mass which is particularly focused on that aspect of Christmas.  The indwelling of the Son, with the Father and Holy Ghost, in the souls of the just, was promised by Christ while He was on Earth.  When the Holy Trinity make Their abode in us, Their vital presence communicates a created share of God’s life to our souls.  Our Lord did not choose to be born in the palace of a King, nor in the bustling environment of the inn, but in a secluded cave.  If our souls are as proud as a royal palace, or as filled as the inn with the distractions of the world, Christ will not seek admittance.  But if our souls are emptied of worldly attachments and as humble as the cave, Christ will not resist in entering.

Hope In The Darkness

Christmas Midnight Mass 2024
This is the day for which we have been preparing for so long.  This Mass is one of the three Masses of Christmas, because one Mass is not enough for this great feast.  The first Mass is particularly special, because it has been believed from the earliest days of the Church that Our Lord was born at Midnight.  The first Mass remembers the eternal generation of the Son from the Father – His birth in eternity.  The Mass at Dawn commemorates the birth of Christ in time.  The Third Mass celebrates the birth of Christ in the hearts of mankind.  This Mass dispels the darkness of the world, of the devil, and of sin.  Our Lord is the Light of the World, and He is the sole path to salvation.

The Dogmas of Christmas

Christmas Conference 2024
In a moment in time the Word assumed a human nature and from then on, He was completely God and completely man and will be so for all eternity.  This feast of Christmas also includes the doctrine of the Virgin Birth.  The Blessed Mother was virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ.  This miracle foreshadowed the Resurrection, in which Christ passed through His tomb while leaving it shut.

The reason why the Son became man was first to honor His Father, and only secondarily for the salvation of mankind.  All things were made as an expression of His goodness, and all mankind was made for God first.  God became a Father in a new way on Christmas, because it was only then that He became Father in the flesh.  Our Lord came to dwell forever in our hearts as the King of Peace.  This is a feast of hope which offers a foretaste of the final victory at the end of time.  The three Masses of Christmas focus, first on the eternal birth of the Son from the Father, then the birth of the Word in the Flesh, and finally the birth of the Word in men’s hearts.  Christ appeared as a helpless child, and all are drawn to the innocence and purity of an infant.  It teaches each one of us to become like little children so we might enter the kingdom of Heaven.

He Is in Our Midst

3rd Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday 2024
This is a season of penance, but today we have a glimpse of the coming joy of Christmas.  On this day, the Holy Ghost instructs us to rejoice.  The Blessed Virgin is one of the models for this season, especially during the Ember Days of Advent.  We are part of those generations prophesied in Holy Scripture who would call the Virgin Mary blessed.  St. Paul instructs us not to be anxious nor attached to the passing things of this world.  We must make the right choices, not because it will benefit us financially, but because of our love for God.  Although we are joyful on this day, we still have work to do.  Let us detach ourselves from the money and pleasures that so easily control us and follow Christ Our Lord to freedom.
