The Davids Of The Future

4th Sunday after Pentecost 2023
This is a Mass of great courage and hope.  We know that even when the enemies are encamped around us, they will weaken and fall.  God allows us to see our weakness so that we may turn to Him in prayer.  This is the Mass which tells us not to be afraid.  The evil powers will continue to attack and their propaganda is stronger than ever but if we walk with God, they cannot stop us. We must be faithful to the sacraments and attached to the teachings of Christ.

Soul Of My Soul

Pentecost Sunday 2023
The Jewish feast of Pentecost celebrated the reception of the Old Law, which God gave to Moses.  During the nine days between the Ascension of Our Lord and this feast of Pentecost the apostles prayed the first novena, which was led by the Blessed Mother.  If we wish to progress swiftly in the spiritual life, we must follow the example of the apostles and go to Our Lady.  It is foolish for any priest to rely on his own skills as a preacher because just as it was with the first sermon of St. Peter on this day, it is the Holy Ghost Who moves the hearts of men.

Victory Over Death

Easter Sunday Morning 2023
We pray that this Easter will give us a greater attachment and devotion to our risen Lord.  Christ would have given His life even if it was to only redeem a single soul.  This day gives us the hope that the promises of Christ will be fulfilled.  God loves each one of us, even His enemies.  Our souls should dwell in Heaven even while we live on Earth.  We must be baptized to enter Heaven, which is why we go to such lengths to ensure baptisms are performed validly.  We are buried with Christ in the waters of baptism and rise with new life just as He did.  We must never lose hope.  “Risen with Christ, the Christian must raise his desires to Heaven and detach himself from worldly pleasures.”

The True Passover

Easter Vigil 2023
Everything is dark at the beginning of this ceremony, just as it was before the creation of the cosmos.  The darkness is representative of the Old Testament, while the Lumen Christi, or Light of Christ, is the New Testament.  The completion of the Passover takes place this evening.  Evidence has been found in recent years of the passage through the Red Sea, but tonight, in a real way, we celebrate the true Passover, which is renewed through the liturgy.  All of creation is made clear to us this night.  Our faith is made perfect in the Resurrection.

The Fight for Salvation

Laetare Sunday 2023
As we pass the middle of Lent, we are given this Sunday a spirit of joy.  The Holy Catholic Church is the new Jerusalem, and we, as the Church Militant, are called to fight for our salvation with the use of prayer and the sacraments.  There are no exceptions when it comes to accepting God’s Word and the articles of Faith.  In the miracle of this Gospel account, we see the figure of the Eucharist and Baptism in the multiplication of the loaves and fishes.

Season of Consolation

Ash Wednesday 2023
We think of the sins we must avoid but rarely do we think of the virtues we must practice.  How often when we confess, we think of the sins we commit but not the reasons why we commit them.  We forget that all the hardships we face in life are given to us directly by God.  Lent is the season of charity, comfort, and consolation.  Charity unites us to God and it will last for all eternity.  It is charity that gives this season its purpose.  We must use this time to express our sorrow for offending Our Lord, to obtain mercy, and receive the sacrament of Penance.

Danger in the Calm

4th Sunday after Epiphany 2023
This season reiterates the Church’s teaching that Jesus Christ is both human and divine, a belief which is under attack in our day.  We see both natures of our Redeemer on display in the Gospel account for this Mass.  God sends storms and trials into our lives to shake us from our apathy, purging us of our attachments, and drawing us to Himself.  When we live lives of relative peace, we must be on guard against allowing our fervor to diminish.  Let us use the difficulties of life to stoke the fire of devotion in our hearts.

Loving God Through Neighbor

3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2023
Before we make our offering at the altar we must first reconcile with our neighbor, and we also have an obligation to thank God and our neighbor for the gifts we have been given.  All the miracles of Our Lord recounted during this season after Epiphany teach us Christ’s motivation.  He performed them to confirm the words that He taught.  From the humility of Christ, we learn spiritual childhood and our dependence on God.  Let us pray for both the conversion of our neighbor and the conversion of ourselves.

Ponder This in Your Hearts

2nd Sunday after Epiphany 2023
This Epistle tells us that we should bless and not curse our enemies.  We see this exemplified in the story of St. Maria Goretti, who wanted her murderer to be with her in Heaven.  We see it in the prayer of St. Stephen offered for Saul, which led to his conversion.  We see it in the prayer of Christ Himself from the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for the know not what they do.”  The miracle at the wedding feast of Cana was the first of Christ’s miracles, and it reminds us that marriage was lifted from the natural to the supernatural order when it was made a sacrament by Our Lord.  Prudent deliberation must be made when searching for a spouse.

We Must Obey To Be Saved

20th Sunday After Pentecost 2022
The official in the Gospel for this Mass traveled a long distance to find Christ, but was rebuked for his lack of faith.  Yet, Christ rewarded the little faith he had, curing his child, and converting his whole household into some of the very first Christians.  St. Paul tells us that God’s Will is that we pray continuously and redeem the time we have wasted.  We must not be foolish with this precious gift of time.  What would the people in hell give for a little more time?  If we do not practice obedience and give up our will, we can be sure we lack the other virtues.  We must act for God and our neighbor, not for our own desires.
