The Devil Hates Us

First Sunday In Lent 2022
This Friday begins Stations of the Cross and this is an appropriate devotion for Lent that was begun by our Mother of Sorrows.  Fasting and abstinence began on Ash Wednesday and their origins go back to Noah.  These practices are essential to our Lenten retreat days.  This week is the feast of St. Dominic Savio who was a student of St. John Bosco and died young at the age of 15.  This account of his spiritual life is moving and an exemplary example for the young of all ages.  Finally, we learn from today’s Gospel about Our Lord’s temptations in the dessert after His forty days of fasting at the beginning of His public life.  The devil was permitted to tempt the Son of God without the least degree of success; however, the devil vents his anger against God now through his attacks on us, especially during holy times like this season preparing us for Holy Week and Easter.

The Church Endures

24th Sunday After Pentecost 2021
Today’s Gospel is warning and a consolation that the good and evil grow together but are separated at the end and receive different rewards based on their deeds in life.  The Church has gone through troubles in the past and present but will always survive because of God’s preserving grace.  The enemies will have their apparent power stripped away.  We should not assume that we are the wheat and neglect to watch over our hearts and have weeds grow there instead.  The most successful apostolates are good example and prayer.  The virtuous life becomes easier as we practice it.

Our King

Feast Of Christ The King 2021
We are subjects of Christ, our King, and as such we are grateful to assist at this feast day and to follow Him faithfully.  Pope Pius XI instituted this feast almost a century ago and placed it before All Saints day.  This highlights His authority over the saints and encourages us to pray to them for their intercession.  The encyclical of the pope teaches about the basis of Our Lord’s Kingship in the Incarnation.  It explains His three fold powers as executor, legislator and judge.  His is a gentle rule over the hearts of men and in due time He rescues us.  On our part, we must never compromise what our King has asked us to do and the best way to honor Him is by denying ourselves, taking up our crosses daily and following Him into His heavenly kingdom.

Thou Art My Hope

3rd Sunday After Pentecost 2021
This Mass and the recent feast days are about union with God, His Love and His Mercy. The earliest depiction of Our Lord in the catacombs is taken from today’s parable of the Shepherd carrying the lost sheep on His shoulders.  This season after Pentecost is one of hope and shown by the liturgical color of green.  The devil tries to discourage us and drag us into despair or inflate us with presumption.  We must maintain our humility in the face of these diabolical attacks and will thereby receive mercy proportionately.  Always have confidence in the Sacred Heart and never in the world.

Baptism Rite Is A Mini-Lent

Today is also the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas who is a model of many things including fidelity to a vocation.  The Liturgy of Lent continues to prepare the catechumens and penitents for the Sacred Triduum.  The daily Masses for this week are geared by the Church for this purpose.  Today’s Gospel returns our attention to the enemy of our spiritual life, namely, the devil.  We can draw all the defense we need against this foe from the Mass and Sacraments, especially the exorcising power of priests.  We are reminded at the end of this account from St. Luke of Our Lady’s role in combating the evil one.  The Blessed Mother has empowered us with the Holy Rosary which carries the mysteries of our Faith in our hands whenever we are unable to be at the altar.

Consolation of the Transfiguration

Our Lord took the three apostles who would soon be tested during His agony in the garden and showed them a glimpse of His divinity during the theophany on Mt. Tabor so they would be strengthened by the remembrance of it at that crucial time.  We too are consoled by this sight as we struggle through Lent with our eyes always fixed on the goal which is our glorification in the end with our Risen Savior.

The Conversion of St. Paul

The showing of Our Lord’s divinity through the time after the Epiphany continues this Sunday with His cures of the leper and the centurion’s servant. Tomorrow is the feast of the conversion of St. Paul and because Christianity hinges on this event it is described in detail for us to appreciate it.  Because of the miraculous nature of this, the sermon during today’s Q&A teaches us about miracles, their purpose and how to judge them.  We then learn more about Saul, the persecutor of the Church, and what he accomplished for God after the unexpected and dramatic moment of his meeting Our Lord on the road to Damascus.

Warning Signs Of The End

Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas and the second coming of Christ.  The sacred liturgy has the ability because of God’s power to relive a past event like the Nativity, bring its graces to us in the present and prepare us for its fulfillment in the future with Our Lord’s return.  St. Matthew’s Gospel about the signs at the end of time is meant to warn us for the trials of those days.  St. Luke also gives these signs and encourages us to lift up our heads knowing that our redemption is near.  This conference then contains a listing and description of the signs of the times so we can be ready.

Pontius Pilate acted cowardly in today’s Gospel and what happened to him as a result is a good lesson for all of us.  This feast was established by Pope Pius XI who saw the attacks against Our Lord as undermining the fabric of civilization also.  This feast cries out to brave souls to defend Christ’s Kingship and restore society to the excellent footing it once had.

Joy And Fear

Feast of the Divine Maternity
Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity which was clearly taught at the Council of Ephesus to correct the errors of Nestorius.  The Holy Virgin is the Mother of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity Who has a divine and a human nature.  St. Paul in the Epistle encourages us to put on a new life of grace and abandon lying, stealing, anger and all other vices incompatible with God’s life in the soul.  Our Lord tells the parable of the marriage feast in today’s Gospel.  This was spoken on Tuesday of Holy Week to those about to kill Him.  To the saved it was the promise of enjoying the heavenly banquet one day but to the unrepentant evildoers it was a warning of being cast out for eternity.
