We should begin the new year with the greatest help at our disposal – Holy Communion.  The benefits given to Catholics through the Holy Eucharist are innumerable.  The Holy Ghost has awakened us and is calling us to draw closer to God.  We must pray to be delivered from temptations and we must be far more vigilant in attending Sunday Mass.  If we are not holier now than we were at this time last year, we have a chance to start our conversion now and follow the example of the saints.

Even though we are given great graces we still fall into sin, and many of these sins are committed out of weakness rather than malice.  We must never forget the great power of the sacramental of holy water, the use of which can take away our venial sins.  We have been given ample stories of the power of God and the aid He gives to the faithful.  Just as the enemies of Our Lord mocked Him, our enemies today do the same.  Throughout our life, it must be God alone who matters.

We Fear Our Mighty King

We often forget that Christ, as the Son of God, owns us completely.  We belong to Him because He created us.  All power on earth comes from above, because it all comes from God.  Although, we often remember the meekness of Christ, we should also be filled with holy fear when contemplating His might.  We read in the Scriptural account how an entire cohort of men, armed with weapons, drew back, and fell to the ground at the words and look of the Savior and how St. John describes a formidable image of the conquering Christ in his apocalyptic vision.  We desire the social kingdom of Christ in which Our Lord is obeyed by all nations and all governments throughout the entire world.

We Must Obey To Be Saved

The official in the Gospel for this Mass traveled a long distance to find Christ, but was rebuked for his lack of faith.  Yet, Christ rewarded the little faith he had, curing his child, and converting his whole household into some of the very first Christians.  St. Paul tells us that God’s Will is that we pray continuously and redeem the time we have wasted.  We must not be foolish with this precious gift of time.  What would the people in hell give for a little more time?  If we do not practice obedience and give up our will, we can be sure we lack the other virtues.  We must act for God and our neighbor, not for our own desires.

The Rosary Of Peace

“Pray the Rosary for peace…”  This was the instruction of the Blessed Mother at Fatima.  We were given this great sacramental for our protection, so that we might pray with the Holy Mother of God and through her, and she might supply what is lacking in our prayers.  In reciting the Rosary, the whole man is occupied – his body, his imagination, his intellect.  We need not focus on the individual details of each mystery, but rather let the mysteries envelop us, removing all earthly ambitions and fears, and granting us a taste of the love of God.

Peace Is Restored Through The Cross

The Exultation Of The Holy Cross 2022
We honor the Holy Cross with a spirit of joy in this liturgy.  It is important for us to know the history of this feast.  The first victory under the banner of the cross was that of Emperor Constantine, in which he conquered the powers of evil by God’s help.  His mother, St. Helena, led the expedition to recover the true Cross from Jerusalem and centuries later, Emperor Heraclius led his armies to combat the pagan world and return the Cross to its rightful home.  This instrument of torture has become the instrument of our salvation, and it is only through the Cross that true peace is restored.  “For the sake of Jesus, let us persevere on the cross.”

Enthronement Of The Holy Infant Of Prague – The popularity of the devotion to Our Lord in the image of the Holy Infant of Prague has spread worldwide.  After the original image had been treated with disregard and forgotten for many years, through the miraculous direction from Heaven, it was restored to its former place of honor.  The inviting words of encouragement spoken by Christ, “the more you honor Me, the more I will bless you,” have touched the hearts of so many faithful who now approach the Holy Infant in the hopes that He grant them the love and simplicity of little children so that they may enter with Him into the kingdom of God.

A More Perfect Humility

This Mass is a Mass for the proud.  Every aspect of this liturgy has some reference to the superior moral virtue of humility.  The Gospel exemplifies humility in the publican, but as we advance in the practice of this virtue our understanding of it must develop as well.  Not only must we acknowledge our nothingness and need, but we must appreciate God’s gifts and benefits to us all the more.  This is how we prevent our humility from remaining focused on self, and this is why the Epistle of this Mass focuses on God’s many gifts.

We must not neglect the saints.  We should know something about the great saints this week like Saints John Vianney, Lawrence, and Clare.  But we must not forget those saints that are especially attacked in our day, like St. Philomena and St. Christopher.  Those who speak ill of God and His saints blaspheme and will not go unpunished.  We know that God rewards the good and punishes the evil and only permits evil to bring forth a greater good.  Just as He cleansed His physical temple of thieves, so He will one day cleanse the world and the Church of all corruption.

Fall Forward

6th Sunday After Pentecost 2022
This Sunday brings our minds back to the two great sacraments of Holy Week: Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.  Through the former we are given life in the Mystical Body and by the latter that life is nourished and grows.  Those who fall short in attempting to “walk in newness of life” have the example of the reparation of King David along with the conversions of so many saints.  Just like those saints, we must use our falls to our advantage, being urged on with greater zeal to fight harder than ever.  In doing so, our frailty becomes our strength, and our falls only propel us forward to our goal.
