22nd Sunday after Pentecost 2018 In the Epistle for the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost St. Paul gives us consoling words from his place of imprisonment. God will see the good work He has begun in us reach its perfection. On our part we need to pray for final perseverance. In the Gospel Christ is not making a political statement as much as one of prioritizing our concerns – starting with God in the first place. This hierarchy of values will guide us in our daily lives and especially assist us when voting.
Sacred Heart 2018 Christ requested this feast of His Sacred Heart to assure us in the latter days of His most merciful love. This is not an optional devotion because it is the core of the Redemption. Our Lord has made twelve promises to those who practice it which culminate in the pledge of future glory in heaven. Now when the world has grown old and cold in its evil the Sacred Heart appears as the cause of hope for all. For those who wish to draw close to His Heart, the masters of the spiritual life counsel self-denial, constant recollection and prayer.
As we conclude the liturgical year, we should still be praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory while examining our lives to test whether or not we have grown in love of God and neighbor. Christ in today’s Gospel prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world. He warns us to be ready always and to avoid any false Christs and false prophets who are people and organizations that are not Catholic.
The feast of Christ The King sums up our faith in the Incarnate God and makes us pray “Thy Kingdom Come.” As good subjects we should know the catechism, pray and give ourselves in return for the divine self sacrifice of Our Lord. We have the examples of the saints who have done so and were the means of the miraculous in this world. Such are needed today when Christianity faces its bleakest future.
During the current crisis a spirit of normalcy has pervaded this chapel but it is good to remember that we are in the midst of a tremendous struggle for the Christian world order and the salvation of souls. Parents have a particular responsibility in preparing their children well to live in this society while not being dragged down by it.
Feast of the Holy Family 2016 In this Gospel, the Holy Family went to Jerusalem for the Bar Mitzvah of Jesus Christ because He had reached the age required to become a “Son of the Law.” This was the moment when a Jewish boy would take on the responsibility of an adult. For Our Lord it meant that He officially and juridically became the public and formal representative of God, His Heavenly Father. The reason Christ stayed in the Temple was because from that moment the Temple was His true home. Our Lord’s “Father’s business” was liturgical worship. The actions of Christ are a clear lesson to us that our obligations to Almighty God exceed all other obligations, even those towards our family. When the Gospel says that “He advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God,” it means that as His humanity developed, He manifested more perfectly His wisdom and perfections.
This feast was instituted as a defense against the attacks on the family, and to combat the errors taught about the family’s purpose in society. It teaches us the sublimity of the passive virtues of family life: silence, humility, and fidelity to duty. These virtues, so often scorned by the world, are the very foundation of a holy human existence. #20160110
At the beginning of the new liturgical year, we are reminded of many great truths. Advent is a time of preparation. God had His Chosen People wait in anticipation of His first coming in mercy, and He has His chosen people once again waiting for His return in glory. Our Lord, as the great Pontiff, bridges the gap between the Creator and the creature, between the infinite and the finite, in His Incarnation. With the beginning of the liturgical year, our journey to become more Christlike is renewed once more. This progressive incorporation into Christ can only be accomplished through participation in the Mass, devout reception of the sacraments, and unceasing prayer. #20151129M
Feast of Christ the King 2015 All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven. We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity. The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives. We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.
Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration. Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations. He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power. Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all. #20151026
Sermon From 20th Sunday After Pentecost 2015 This year marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and her feast is this week. Her quotes show her to be a traditionalist and a teacher of prayer. Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Last week was the feast honoring the Rosary and we are reminded of the importance of this powerful sacramental, what it is and how we should pray it efficaciously. At Fatima the Blessed Mother revealed to the three children on October 13, 1917 when the Miracle of the Sun took place her identity as the Lady of the Rosary. Besides the Rosary she taught them how to offer up their daily little sacrifices in reparation for the sins of the world and for their own sanctification. #20151011M
17th Sunday after Pentecost 2015 There was only one religion started by Our Lord, and we should never be swayed to think otherwise. Centuries ago, when devotion to the Holy Rosary had begun to decrease, a terrible plague was sent throughout Europe as a chastisement. The Blessed Mother and Our Lord appeared to Blessed Alan de la Roche and instructed him to promote the Rosary through his preaching. By his efforts, this devotion was restored. In our own day the Holy Rosary is often ignored or suppressed. We should be on fire for the defense of Our Lord and His Mother and use the Holy Rosary as a prayer of penance to make up for the sins of mankind. #20150920K
