All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven.  We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity.  The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives.  We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.

Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration.  Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations.  He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power.  Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all.

The Importance Of The Rosary

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and her feast is this week.  Her quotes show her to be a traditionalist and a teacher of prayer.  Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Last week was the feast honoring the Rosary and we are reminded of the importance of this powerful sacramental, what it is and how we should pray it efficaciously.  At Fatima the Blessed Mother revealed to the three children on October 13, 1917 when the Miracle of the Sun took place her identity as the Lady of the Rosary.  Besides the Rosary she taught them how to offer up their daily little sacrifices in reparation for the sins of the world and for their own sanctification.

Love Him In Return

Feast of the Sacred Heart 2015
“To have Christ dwelling through faith in your heart” refers to the abiding presence of the Divine Person of Christ in our souls while in the state of grace.  When St. Paul speaks of knowing God’s love, he does not simply refer to an intellectual knowledge, but rather a direct, immediate experience of the love of God, just as the great saints experienced.  This feast of the Sacred Heart was requested directly by Our Lord, and no man is free to ignore this devotion.  The original sketch of the Sacred Heart shows a great wound inside of which is written the word “caritas” – “love”.  This devotion was reserved for a time when the world had grown cold in its love that it might gain favor through the revelation of Our Lord’s Sacred Heart.

May Christ Triumph in Us

This is the most important week of the liturgical year, and we are reminded of the necessity of all the sacraments, but especially of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.  We begin this week with a look towards the future triumph when we celebrate Our Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem.  We meet Christ now with the palms and in the priest in the procession, and we will meet Him in the future when He leads us into the heavenly Jerusalem.  We must have the disposition that God desires when we received the palms, so we may be victorious over sin. Let us, by our fervor, make up of the sins for our life during this week.

Our Redemption Has Begun

What beautiful words the angel spoke to the Virgin Mary: “Nothing shall be impossible with God.”  Everything is under God’s power, and He is the Author of all.  We all exist to manifest the goodness of our Creator.  Evil is only permitted to occur so we may be sanctified by it.  This is called the Golden Mass because of its beauty and the many favors that are granted to those who pray fervently on this day.  This is the beginning of our redemption.  In the silent moment after the fiat of the Blessed Mother and the departure of the angel, the Son of God became man.  Christ became a priest at the moment of His conception, because in Him the whole cosmos is united.

The Everlasting Effect of Christmas

On this day the Son of God, after taking to Himself a human nature, entered the world.  The Virginal Birth is the cornerstone of this feast.  The Blessed Mother was virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ, and remained so perpetually.  We are Christians not because we admire Jesus Christ, but because we recognize Him as our God.  God entered the world and changed the destiny of the whole human race.  Despite all the world seems to offer, it ultimately only gives sadness and fear.  However, Christmas is the one day that brings a lasting joy to man, because it offers us true hope.  We pray that the joy of the manger remains forever in our hearts.

Fitting Mother for a Fitting Son

The words from the Sapiential books of the Bible are applied to the Blessed Virgin in the Epistle today.  Even before she was created, the Holy Virgin was in the mind of God and was given all the gifts for her calling.  The greatest of these gifts was the Immaculate Conception.  We too are given all the gifts we need to follow our vocation to sanctity.  About the Blessed Mother, there can ever be enough said.  Our redemption was liberative, but hers was preservative.  She possessed the indwelling of the Holy Trinity from the moment of her creation.  Sanctifying grace makes the inheritance of Heaven our right.  This day we celebrate the triumph over sin.

The King Of Saints

The purpose of human history is for the creation of saints.  The reason for all human existence is to reach the final end of sanctification.  The feast of Christ the King was instituted to combat secularism.  God is the efficient cause of everything, and because of this He owns everything.  There is a communal side to all men, but we are not only bonded to one another, we are bound to God.  Christ in His human nature is intimately united to the human race, and even more so after we are baptized.  God wants to be loved, and it is our obligation to do so.

Our Humiliations

This week we have the feasts of St. Helen and St. Bernard who entered religious life with thirty relatives and friends who accompanied him.  This is the Sunday of Humility when we remember where we came from so we do not fall.  St. Paul reminds Corinthians of their stupidity in worshiping rocks and how grace helped them.  We were called to a supernatural destiny from the beginning but Adam destroyed that for us.  Now we must overcome the inherited pride by the essential virtue of humility because unless we become like little children we shall not enter into heaven.

The Unity and Trinity of God

Trinity Sunday 2014
Today is also Father’s Day and we wish all the fathers a happy day.  This feast is considered the greatest in the Church because it celebrates the supernatural mystery about the Trinity’s own inner life which we could never even imagine without Revelation informing us of this secret of the Three Persons in One God.  The Old Testament gave indications of this mystery but it was reserved for the Second Person to reveal this personally when He walked among us.  Our Faith teaches this as a fundamental truth without which one cannot be saved.  Each Person of the Trinity has an internal mission and by attribution an external mission.  We are incorporated into this Trinitarian life by sanctifying grace and will see its fruition in heaven.
