Our Lord shows great mercy to us because He knows man’s nature so well.  God has given us great gifts of grace but because they remain invisible to us, He performed miracles to show what is taking place in souls.  God’s grace returns life to our souls just as Christ raised Lazarus from the dead.  When we have the Gospel preached to us, we must not twist it to suit our opinions.  We can only be perfect as our heavenly Father when we, as sons of God, cooperate with God’s Grace.

Our Humiliations

This week we have the feasts of St. Helen and St. Bernard who entered religious life with thirty relatives and friends who accompanied him.  This is the Sunday of Humility when we remember where we came from so we do not fall.  St. Paul reminds Corinthians of their stupidity in worshiping rocks and how grace helped them.  We were called to a supernatural destiny from the beginning but Adam destroyed that for us.  Now we must overcome the inherited pride by the essential virtue of humility because unless we become like little children we shall not enter into heaven.

Fear And Encouragement

We are given tremendous encouragements in this Mass.  Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it is that fear which we are taught today.  Even as the elect, we can still be lost, but God is faithful and will not abandon us.  Just as Christ wept over the city of Jerusalem, we feel sorrow for those who have turned away from God and will endure His just punishments.  We are all soldiers of Christ who must remain strong and continue to pray for our enemies.

This week has the beautiful feasts of St. Dominic, Our Lady of the Snows, the Transfiguration and St. John Vianney.  Man by nature has the need to be religious and bind himself to that which is greater, namely God the Creator.  For Catholics this is enhanced as we are bound to God our Father.  For these reasons, and because of God’s own commandment, we must worship Him publicly and should not permit anything to prevent us from attending Mass on Sundays and Holydays of obligation.  Real men sacrifice all for family, and are willing to do the same for Almighty God.  St. Augustine said it famously, “Lord, you have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”

Surprising Apostle

This sermon tells the story of Saint Matthew who was unique and unlike any of the other disciples chosen by Our Lord.  However, this sermon includes multiple talks including loyalty and friendship with the example of the friends to the man who was lowered down to Christ in today’s Gospel.  Also, the vice of covetousness is warned against as seen in people of pride and those who have a grasping desire for power and wealth.  We are instructed to pray with faith because our prayers lack faith and this is the cause of the lack of miracles today.  Lastly, we are reminded that repentance for sins is paramount and a clear conscience allows one to pray better.

The Collect for this Mass is short but important because it is praying for grace.  What is grace?  How does it work?  Why does God continue to give us grace?  All these questions and more are answered and explained in this veritable tract on Grace which includes actual, sanctifying and cooperating grace.  This week’s feast of the Holy Name of Mary was the result of thanksgiving for her saving intercession in the battle of Vienna which preserved Christendom.  The account of this inspiring story is given to help appreciate how serious was the crisis and the power of the Blessed Mother.  Finally, today’s Gospel story of the cure of the dropsical man follows upon the recording of Our Lord’s table talk as an invited Guest.  After the miracle Jesus taught how simplicity of soul counters Phariseeism.

Meekness And Humility

Catholics should know the true purpose of the daily missal.  It should be used primarily as a prayer book to help us elevate our hearts to God while we assist at Mass.

The hallmark of the Gospel can be summed up in the words, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart.”  Pride is the greatest obstacle to union with God.  All vices are rooted in pride.  Sometimes God allows a person to fall, especially into sins of the flesh, to make him humble.  We must be on guard lest we use virtue as a means of feeding our pride – practicing virtue simply because it makes us feel good.  Pray that we love God for His own sake.

Today’s announcements have details about the upcoming confirmations.  Also, there is an instruction on Holy Communion and the dispositions necessary for its reception and how wrong it is to assume what the state of soul is for a non-communicant.  We have many beautiful feasts this week and we learn about St. Dominic, Our Lady of the Snows, the Transfiguration, St. John Vianney, the 14 Holy Helpers, St. Lawrence and St. Philomena.  Finally, we are reminded that, unlike non-Catholics, our belief, as prayed in the Act of Faith, is based on God Who can neither deceive nor be deceived.  This is supernatural faith.  Others believe in their own study of the Bible etc. and that is only natural faith.

The One Most Like God

Feast of Saint Michael 2012
This feast has been celebrated for nearly 1,500 years.  The existence of angels, or some form of spiritual guardian, has been affirmed by people of every culture and religion.  We have not only been told about their existence through Divine Revelation, but God has allowed them to visit us innumerable times throughout history.  The angels are quasi-infinite in number, because each of them was made to reflect a perfection of God.  We will never appreciate all our guardian angels have done for us.  We give our good angels great joy when we are virtuous, and we give them great power to aid us when we invoke their help.  St. Michael was chosen as God’s great defender, not because he was the most powerful, but because he was most Godlike in his love.

Everything from God’s Hand

St. Paul tells us that we must live the life of holiness to which we have all been called.  When we speak of our neighbor we refer to both our friends and enemies.  Everything that happens to us comes from God.  He controls the universe and wills everything except for sin itself.  It should be easy for us to practice patience and forbearance, if we see all the actions of our neighbor as directly willed or at least permitted by God.  Our enemies provide crosses for us to carry with patience and provide us with the opportunities to practice virtue.  We do not know the conscience of our neighbor, but we know all the graces we have received and the malice of our own souls.  How easy it should be to judge ourselves harshly while being slow to judge our neighbor.
