We Must Desire Sanctity

All Saints Day 2015
Today we rejoice because this is the day on which the Church celebrates all her children who have overcome the world.  In the process by which a saint is canonized, it must be determined that they expressed nothing contrary to faith and morals, and that they practiced virtue in a heroic way.  After this, the Church waits for God to affirm the individual’s sanctity by miracles attributed to their intercession.  It is not enough for a Catholic merely to recite the Creed, he must believe it and practice it.  For every walk of life, there is a saint who has lived it as an example to follow.  Today we adore God as we honor His saints, and desire to make the little sacrifices necessary on our road to holiness.

The Master Of The Universe

All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven.  We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity.  The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives.  We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.

Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration.  Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations.  He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power.  Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all.

Pray for a Merciful Heart

Most of us can think of a time during our life when we were slow to forgive one who asked for forgiveness.  The terrible crime of refusing forgiveness to those who sincerely ask for it is in direct contradiction to the Our Father, in which we ask that God forgive our trespasses as we forgive others.  Spiritual reading and the Holy Rosary are powerful weapons against the devil, as well as some of the greatest aids to living a true Christian life.  Every Catholic should be familiar with the 15 promises that the Blessed Mother made to those who devoutly pray the Rosary.

The Importance Of The Rosary

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and her feast is this week.  Her quotes show her to be a traditionalist and a teacher of prayer.  Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Last week was the feast honoring the Rosary and we are reminded of the importance of this powerful sacramental, what it is and how we should pray it efficaciously.  At Fatima the Blessed Mother revealed to the three children on October 13, 1917 when the Miracle of the Sun took place her identity as the Lady of the Rosary.  Besides the Rosary she taught them how to offer up their daily little sacrifices in reparation for the sins of the world and for their own sanctification.

Spiritual Childhood

St. Francis is universally esteemed by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  Despite living many centuries apart, the lives of St. Frances and St. Thérèse share many similarities, particularly in regard to their practice of spiritual childhood.  The origins of this doctrine can be found in Our Lord’s words, “unless you become like this little child, you will not enter the kingdom of God.”  Spiritual childhood is closely linked to poverty of spirit, by which one receives a deep understanding of his need and utter helplessness.  This leads to childlike dependence on God’s grace.  Spiritual childhood is indispensable for all who wish to possess the Kingdom of God.

Our Faithful Angels

So many Catholics desire a greater understanding of the Mass.  The Consecration of the Mass is surrounded by rituals and rubrics that are filled with meaning.  When you appreciate the meaning of these rubrics you see the true beauty of the Mass and the great evil of those who would wish to destroy it.  There is no dogma of the Faith which teaches infallibly the doctrine of Guardian Angels, however, the evidence from Scripture and Tradition is so overwhelming that it is considered infallible.  When Christ speaks of the angels watching over the “little ones,” He is not speaking only of children but of all who are innocent.  Our Guardian Angels preserve us from dangers to our body and soul, as well as temptations from the evil spirit.  They inspire holy thoughts and aid us in performing virtuous acts.  From the testimonies of many saints, we know that our angels never tire of being with us all day long and watching over us at every moment.

Our Guides on the Way to Perfection

Since at least the fifth century, St. Michael the Archangel has been given widespread honor in the Church.  We have this feast to thank God for creating the angels, and to help us rejoice in their happiness and imitate their great love of God.  Although they were not redeemed as we were, the angels receive all their virtues from Our Lord, making each of them a reflection of His perfections.  We also honor the angels today because of the pivotal role they played in our Redemption.  When reciting the Gloria at the Mass we should remember we are reciting the prayer of the holy angels, and if we ask them to, they will join us in our prayers.

No Lasting City

This is the last day of the liturgical year, which is given to us as a reminder that we do not have our permanent home here on Earth.  We are reminded to be thankful and to be prepared for our coming judgment.  We stand during the Gospel to remind us that we must always be prepared to fulfill the will of God expressed in those words.  We learn of everyone’s sins at the Last Judgment.  We have been given great hope and expectation of being saved and that Christ will bring us to Heaven, so we may see the Trinity and be enraptured in that vision for all eternity.

We live a lifetime in a single year through the liturgy.  The liturgy inspires us to great confidence because it gives us trust in God.  By ourselves we are lowly and incapable of doing anything.  The Gospel demonstrates this great confidence which stems from faith.  We must pray for absolute faith in our God.  It is important for us to know why we are Catholics, and to review the many proofs of the one, true Church.  Unless a person comes to the conviction that the truths of the Catholic Faith are revealed by God, he cannot make an act of faith.

Mercy For The Living And The Dead

The books of the Machabees are read in the Divine Office during this time.  We are given an important instruction from the Machabees, especially during the month of November, to pray for the dead.  We are fighting a seemingly impossible enemy to conquer.  But we must think of God, not of ourselves, and rely on His help and the help of the good angels.  We will be punished if we are hardhearted and do not forgive those who ask for mercy, or do not pray for the souls in Purgatory who are so much in need of our help.
