Complete Trust In The Shepherd

2nd Sunday after Easter 2023
There is only one fold and one shepherd. We have complete trust in Christ as our Good Shepherd, and it is the call of all priests and bishops to watch over the flock and to bring those who are lost back to the true fold. As we have heard before and we continue to reiterate, the price of our salvation is the Blood of the Lamb – the Blood of Christ, shed for our salvation. The beautiful Paschal Candle stands as a consoling reminder of Christ’s presence with us for the forty days after His Resurrection.

Door To The Sheepfold

1st Friday Conference May 2022
The pagan view is that man is constituted by his work.  Without work, man is not human.  The Catholic view is that work is an expression of the man.  St. Joseph the “faber” is the example of all workers.

Good Shepherd Sunday gave place to the feast of St. Joseph this year, but the Gospel account would not be overlooked.  Christ identifies Himself as the door to the sheepfold.  In those days, the shepherds would build a corral to protect the sheep at night, with one shepherd chosen to guard the door so that he might only let in those who truly belong in the fold.  This example was used to combat those who were teaching without authority.  Christ is the Good Shepard, whom the sheep know, trust, and follow.  It was shocking for the people of Christ’s time to hear Him say that He loved His sheep to the point that He would give His life for them.  He feeds us through the Holy Eucharist and other sacraments and asks for only our heart in return.

Thou Art My Hope

3rd Sunday After Pentecost 2021
This Mass and the recent feast days are about union with God, His Love and His Mercy. The earliest depiction of Our Lord in the catacombs is taken from today’s parable of the Shepherd carrying the lost sheep on His shoulders.  This season after Pentecost is one of hope and shown by the liturgical color of green.  The devil tries to discourage us and drag us into despair or inflate us with presumption.  We must maintain our humility in the face of these diabolical attacks and will thereby receive mercy proportionately.  Always have confidence in the Sacred Heart and never in the world.

I, Myself, Will Shepherd My Flock

Good Shepherd Sunday 2021
Our Lord’s Resurrection is the foundation of our faith and so we celebrate this during Paschal time and on every Sunday.  Christ spent these forty days preparing His apostles and stirring their hearts with ardor and love.  This Sunday shows Him as the Good Shepherd Who gives His life for His Sheep and will ever protect and care for them.  Others He has entrusted with this task in His absence but woe to those who betray that trust.  Jesus assures us that He will shepherd His flock Himself.

The Intimate Love Of God

Good Shepherd Sunday 2020
The beautiful expanded account of the Gospel of the Good Shepherd is comforting and consoling.  We are free from fear and death.  As Catholics we do not simply submit to our demise as the animals do but we embrace it as Our Savior did.  A plenary indulgence is attached to such a heroic death. Christ suffered terribly to save us and speaks lovingly to us as our Shepherd.  His love will not permit anything truly evil to touch us.  Any cross He allows us the privilege to carry will bring us to a happier future.

Humility Turns Men Into Angels

3rd Sunday after Pentecost 2019
Although some might think it unbecoming for God to become a man, Our Lord chose this path to teach us humility.  All the saints excelled in this virtue and without it we cannot be saved.  Pride is the characteristic vice of Luther and all those who are lost.  Even in daily life people do not like those who are proud.  Some wonder why bad people prosper while the good suffer in this life.  The good are given the opportunity to imitate Christ and gain merit for heaven while the evil are given a reward in this life for whatever good they do because they cannot receive any reward in hell.  Practice humility and be assured of heaven.

Communion From Our Shepherd

Good Shepherd Sunday – First Communion Sunday 2019
Today is the first time we have had Good Shepherd Sunday also as our First Communion Sunday.  What a special day it is for all of us!  We recall the greatest day of our lives when we received Our Lord for the first time in Holy Communion.  Christ, the Good Shepherd, leads His sheep in the Faith, takes care of them by the sacraments and feeds them with His own Body and Blood.  We thank Him for His divine love.

We Have Reason To Hope

3rd Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Sacred Heart is shown to us in the Mass of this Sunday.  The texts emphasize the hope of this season symbolized by the color green.  Our Lord describes Himself in the Gospel as the Good Shepherd who carries His lost sheep home on His shoulders.  St. Peter warns in the Epistle that the devil is an obstacle on our path to heaven and we must know our enemy in order to combat him.  He was a murder and liar from the beginning and those are the evidence of his presence in the world today which is seen in recent news items.  Despite the dire circumstances we must have hope.

I Know Mine And Mine Know Me

Good Shepherd Sunday 2018
The Church continues to celebrate the Resurrection in the Mass texts for this second Sunday after Easter known as Good Shepherd Sunday.  The Epistle and Gospel highlight the beautiful aspect of Christ as the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls.  Psalm 22 expresses so well His care and love. The prophet Ezechiel prophesied that Our Lord, Himself, will shepherd His sheep.  These are consoling thoughts for all who follow our true Shepherd.

I Shall Reign Despite My Enemies

3rd Sunday after Pentecost 2017

There is a social dimension concerning devotion to the Sacred Heart which comes from Our Lord’s petition to King Louis XIV through St. Margaret Mary that he place the image of Christ’s Heart on his personal royal banner.  This sermon also explains the pursuing love of Our Savior through His mercy as described in the parables of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin and Prodigal Son.
