The Epiphany And The Holy Family

Feast Of The Holy Family 2021
The crèche is a composite of many events surrounding the Nativity and culminating with the adoration of the Magi which is celebrated on the feast of the Epiphany.  The first Sunday after this feast is that of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  The Gospel tells the story of the finding of Our Lord in the Temple at the age of 12.  The Holy Family is a model of liturgical prayer for our families because of its fidelity and devotion to all the celebrations of the Old Testament like the Passover.  Our religious community has enjoyed the patronage of the Holy Family for 44 years and we are grateful for that and for all the assistance we have received from the faithful.

Language of Love

The Epistle for today points us to the Catholic Church which we are blessed to have.  It has the one true Faith and a unity of belief, worship, sacraments and hierarchy.  Christ gave us this as a means of fulfilling the two great commandments of love which He repeats in the Gospel for this Sunday.  In this kingdom we learn to speak the language of love so that we will be fluent when we reach heaven.  We must prepare now for our death which will usher us into heaven.  Pride is the obstacle and we have time now to remove this from our spiritual life.

Friend, Come Up Higher

This week we have the Ember Days and the feasts of St. Matthew and the North American Martyrs.  St. Paul in the Epistle for today’s Mass writes about God the Father as the source of all fatherhood in the world.  Our Lord in the Gospel teaches the importance of humility in the parable of the wedding feast.  Pride is the vice that is the worst obstacle we face in our spiritual life.  The Collect for today is about grace and how it inspires us in good works and helps us complete them.  Always follow the motions of grace that God sends.

We Will Reap What We Sow

Our Lady’s 30 days end this week so we must be grateful for the graces received through her intercession.  The Introit shows how God allows us to pray with confidence because of Christ the High Priest.  St. Paul warns us to labor for spiritual rewards so we will received incorruptible merits and never to forget from where we come.  In commenting on the Gospel St. Augustine reminds us that the miracle of raising those dead in mortal sin is greater than the raising of the widow’s son.

Love God With Your Whole Being

The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and we should imitate our Blessed Mother whom Our Lord said “heard the word of God and kept it”.  This Gospel about the Good Samaritan reminds us that we can see how much we love God by how we love our neighbor.  Christ summarized all the law by saying that we must love God with all our being and our neighbor as ourselves.

The Mass Is Theocentric

Conference After Mass
After the Epistle and Gospel, Father spoke about the care he received the last few weeks and his attendance at Mass and how much it is centered on God.  Then he spoke about today’s feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori who is the patron of moral theologians and who propagated the system of probabilism through his newly founded congregation and its priest members.  St. Alphonsus’ father opposed his vocation to the priesthood until he heard his son’s first sermon and then he approached him in sorrow and repentance for causing him difficulty in pursuing it.  St. Alphonsus wrote many devotional works, was the instrument of miracles and the example for other saints like St. Gerard Majella.

Keep The First Fervor

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost 2020
After hearing about Saints John Gualbert, Veronica, Bonaventure, Henry, the Carmelite Sisters of Compiegne and Camillus we had a renewal of the Paschal sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist in the Epistle and Gospel.  The Divine Office recounts the story of King David and how his sloth led to sins of adultery and murder.  His meekness saved him when his crimes were exposed by the prophet Nathan.  We should imitate his repentance and reject the devil and all his works.  Receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion faithfully will lead us to union and heaven one day.

Are We Afraid Of Battle?

In the Gospel Christ condemns unjust anger and asks us to love our enemies.  Will we shirk this duty as a soldier who refuses to go into battle?  In the Epistle St. Peter writes that we should be merciful and in return we will receive mercy.

Our Most Sublime Prayer

The Gospel shows Our Lord coming to protect us and this is perfect for Father’s Day as well.  When asked how to pray Christ gave us the Our Father.  When we receive Holy Communion we are united with Our Lord.  We are meant to be saints and must pray and strive for that always.  Not to desire sanctity is a sin.  We should do everything for our Heavenly Father and someday reach eternal happiness.

The Essential Devotion

Feast Of The Sacred Heart 2020
Love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus must be part of everyone’s life, especially the consecrated who are baptized, confirmed or ordained.  The reason for this is that His Human Heart belongs to God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, and contains those mysteries that St. Paul alludes to in today’s Epistle.  The Mass texts for today tell us more about the Heart of Jesus as revealed starting with the opening of It on the Cross.  Private apparitions to St. Margaret Mary gave the impetus for spreading this devotion and the popes have encouraged it throughout the centuries.  Many benefits accrue to us by practicing this love and one is the peace and rest that comes to our own heart and soul by learning to be meek and humble like Our Lord.
