Have We Progressed?

This Epistle is beloved among all Christians because of its beautiful explanation of charity.  We can see from St. Paul’s words how far-removed true charity is from the false notions held today.  In our days, great emphasis is placed on giving aid to the poor, which is a truly important work of mercy, but we are seldom reminded that if these works are not done with love of God for His own sake, and love of neighbor for God’s sake, they will profit us nothing.  As we approach the season of Lent, we must ask ourselves if we have improved in our spiritual life over the last year.  If we have not, then we have great work ahead of us.  However, we are not alone.  Our Lord and His Mother stand by our side to lift us up.

Love Christ As He Loves Us

St. Paul wrote this Epistle in answer to those who criticized him and to show his zeal for the salvation of souls.  To hear all that St. Paul endured makes us feel ashamed when considering how little we have suffered for the love of Christ.  Many today have a very confused idea of what Heaven is.  We can only have a true notion of Heaven through infused faith and prayer, and those lacking the true Faith cannot have a correct appreciation of eternal happiness.  Our union with Our Lord in the reception of the Holy Eucharist gives us a foretaste of eternal beatitude.  God desires that we have an ardent love for Him and that our love for Him reflects, in some small way, the love He has for us.

Uncompromising Faith

2nd Sunday after Epiphany 2016
St. Vincent was ordained a deacon and was arrested with his bishop under Roman persecution. While imprisoned St. Vincent began preaching to those around him, and even the tortures he endured did nothing to silence him. St. Vincent resisted the slightest compromise. It was only by his continuous prayers that he remained faithful to Our Lord. May we all be as faithful as this great saint.

The theme of the feast of the Epiphany is continued in the text for today’s Mass. St. Paul instructs the converted pagans in Rome to be patient with their neighbors. At the wedding feast of Cana, Our Lord made it clear to His holy Mother that the will of His Father came before every other consideration. The first miracle He performed sanctified marriage in a special way and increased the faith of the Apostles.

Faith: The Beginning of Heaven

Our Lord worked the miracle recounted in the Gospel because of the strong faith of the men who brought the paralytic to Him.  We are only capable of doing evil by our own power, but all the good we do is because of the help of God’s grace.  The Church has taught for 2,000 years without error.  Through this we see the truth of St. Paul’s rhetorical question, “what grace are you lacking?”  Christ came to bring us to Heaven.  And our faith, when it is enlivened by charity, allows us to begin to experience Heaven while we are still on earth.

Bearing Our Burdens with Christ

The Holy Ghost tells us, through the words of St. Paul, that we die to sin and rise with the new life of Sanctifying Grace.  We endure a daily struggle to endure and overcome our faults.  Depression and anxiety have no place when we remember that God remains with us at every moment.  Tepidity must be combatted, because those who are lukewarm are, in a certain way, the farthest from God.  Let us make every effort to honor God in the best way we can, to express our unspeakable gratitude for everything we have received from His hand.

Upon The Rock

Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2015
As Roman Catholics, our home is Rome because it is the symbol of the Eternal City.  St. Leo the Great tells us that God did not want the story of the murderous Romulus and Remus to remain the foundation of the city that people remember, but God would send two other brothers who were bound together in their love of God – Saints Peter and Paul.  This is the day that we celebrate these two brothers in Christ becoming perfect Christians through the shedding of their blood.  It is truly amazing that we know so much about these two men who lived so long ago.  St. Peter’s great heart was the essential aspect of his character that Christ loved so much.  We must possess the same confidence that St. Peter showed in the face of adversity.

God Will Win

Fraternal charity is a theme of this Mass. Tomorrow is the feast of St. Peter and he is a great person who was trained well by Our Lord. A test of courage is the ability to endure challenges patiently. We should imitate the saints in seeking peace and pursuing it. Our love of God is seen in how much we love neighbor too. Our society is deteriorating and is seen in its acceptance of the four sins that cry out to God for vengeance. A heavy chastisement is awaiting us. The Sacred Heart lamented that even consecrated souls are guilty. By our baptisms all of us have been dedicated to the Blessed Trinity and should fulfill our vows of fidelity. God will triumph in the end with a victory as seen by Gideon.

No Fear of the World

There are Catholics who are giving their lives for the Faith in our own day.  What a powerful lesson that should encourage us to stand courageously with Christ in our own lives.  St. Thomas Aquinas is an excellent example for us of humility, obedience, and the need for spiritual reading.  Spiritual reading lays the foundation for mental prayer.  In the Epistle for today, St. Paul warns us about sins of the flesh and the need to preserve our bodies as the dwelling place of the Blessed Trinity.  We should have a holy fear of God and His law, but never fear of the world.

Distrust of Self

Many of the Epistles of St. Paul were dictated by him and written by his fellow disciples.  He was being attacked by false Christians, so in this Epistle he attempts to bring back the faithful who were led astray.  St. Paul’s great lesson is to distrust ourselves.  This season is the realization of original sin, but this week we learn about actual sins.  We know that we suffer in this life because of sin.  In the Gospel for this Mass Our Lord demonstrates that there is meaning behind all the words of Scripture.  We must respond completely in giving ourselves to God.

The Growth Of The Inner Man

St. Paul tells us that he belongs to us.  He was made a saint for us, and he continues his intercession for us to this day.  We are told to grow in the inner man, to grow in Sanctifying Grace.  The breadth of God’s love is the magnitude of His love.  The length its eternity.  The height of God’s loves refers to the fact that His love surpasses all understanding.  The depth of His love refers to its sincerity.  We can never thank God enough for the least of His gifts.
