Do Not Put Off Your Salvation

4th Sunday of Advent 2016

The upcoming Feast of the Nativity celebrates not only Christ’s birth on earth but His Second Coming at the end of time.  As the Gospel says: the Word came to St. John as the Voice of One Crying in the desert, make straight the paths of the Lord… for all mankind shall see the Salvation of God.”  The Ember Days this past week gave us the opportunity to do penance in preparation for this great feast of the Nativity.  It is important for us to realize that sorrow in itself, though necessary and good, is not enough.  Our Lord gave to the disciples the power to not only forgive sins but to retain them in the Sacrament of Penance.  This is why the firm purpose of amendment attached to the Act of Contrition is so necessary.  For we must not only show sorrow for our sins and confess them to the priest, acting as Christ in the confessional, but we must resolve to live out our lives by doing good works and making reparation for our sins.  It is also important for us to realize that Our Lord is the Supreme Judge who will judge definitively at the end of time.  Withholding personal judgments in this life is our only safe course.

The Peace Of God Surpasses All Understanding

Gaudete Sunday 2016

“Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say rejoice.  Let your modesty be known to all men: for The Lord is nigh.”   These words taken from St. Paul’s epistle to the Philippians for the Third Sunday of Advent may seem strange in today’s times because of all that is wrong in today’s world   However, they are as true now as they were when they were first written because they refer not only to the upcoming Feast of the Nativity but to the Second Coming of Our Lord and Savior at the end of time.  We can be joyous because we have already been saved through Baptism.  The promise of what lies ahead for us, if we are faithful, is far greater than any of the problems and sufferings that we endure in this life.  The Lord is indeed nigh and all we have to do is recognize His presence in our midst and pray that He keeps us true to our baptismal promises.

Go To Heaven For Christmas

Second Sunday of Advent 2016

“Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?”  This question posed to Our Lord by the disciples of St. John the Baptist in no way implies that St. John himself had any doubts about the Divinity of Our Lord.  St. John had been informed by revelation who Jesus was: “This is My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” but John knew that he must decrease so that Christ must increase and he wanted his disciples to follow Jesus, not himself.  In today’s Mass we have both the Joy of Christ’s coming on earth and the forewarning of Christ’s Second Coming in the scriptural readings for the Second Sunday of Advent.  The big question is: will we be prepared for both?  Unless we pray that we will be among the elect, it will not happen – so now is the time to do so.

Christ And His Baptist

Question and Answer Session June 26, 2016

Father speaks about the blessing of articles, modest dress during the summer, the reason women wear veils in Church and the striking parallels in the lives of Our Lord and St. John the Baptist.  The hymn for his feastday was the origin for the musical scale that we use today.

God Created Us to Pray

2nd Sunday of Advent 2015
St. John the Baptist did not doubt that Christ was the promised Messiah when he sent his followers to question Him, but rather he wished that his followers would recognize Our Lord and follow Him instead.  We are all preparing for the coming of Christ and do penance so we might receive Him worthily.  Advent is the season to give up our sins.  The graces and virtues God gives us are a pledge which reminds us how much God desires our salvation.  Even if we feel our prayers have little effect, they are far more powerful than we believe, especially when they are united to the prayers of Christ.  In union with all Catholics through the history of the Church, we beg God to grant us the victory which we cannot achieve on our own.

What Is Promised Through Her

Feast of the Assumption 2015

This Gospel recalls the mystery of the Visitation, in which we see Elizabeth as an old woman humbling herself before the young Virgin Mary.  A momentary gift of reason was given to the infant, St. John the Baptist, in the womb of his mother when he received the revelation that he was in the presence of the Redeemer.  On that day the Blessed Virgin was recognized for the first time as the Mother of God.

The Dogma of the Assumption was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in modern times, but it was held, from the earliest days of the Church, that those who dared to question this dogma were enemies of God.  Even the saints are looking forward to that final day when their souls will be united with their bodies in Heaven.  This feast is a proclamation of that future day on which we will feel for the first time the embrace of our Blessed Mother.

Penance and Preparation

Sermon From The
4th Sunday of Advent 2014
✟Father Violette
This is the last day of preparation for the birth of Christ.  To talk about penance, conversion, and self-purification is not opposed to the joy of Christmas, but necessary for true participation.  Even the Child Jesus had His Passion in mind when He first entered the world.  St. John the Baptist was the holiest man who had ever lived up to that point, yet he was not given power to change the soul through his baptism.  It is only through the merits of Christ that the sacrament of Baptism gives us new life.  Without prayer and penance, we will surely lose our way.

Theological In Prayer

Sermon On The
2nd Sunday of Advent 2014
The liturgical year begins with a consoling view of the end from the prospective of those who are faithful.  This Advent prepares us for the coming of Christ on Christmas and at the end of time.  The “People of Sion” are called to exult and be joyful, knowing that God is coming to save us.  God has been faithful to His promise in sending the Redeemer.  St. John the Baptist, who was soon to be martyred, sent his followers to Christ so they might follow Him.  If we wish to be saved, we must pray theologically.

Prepare for Christ’s Coming

Sermon From
4th Sunday of Advent 2013
Father Violette✟
We have weeks to prepare us for the major feasts of the Church to wake us up and ensure we are ready.  From all eternity God has a special grace for each one of us – the grace of Christmas.  We have ample time to prepare so that we may be drawn directly to heaven when God calls us.  Although St. John the Baptist’s life was short, he accomplished all that God wanted in the time allotted to him.  We pray that God may do the same with our lives at this Mass.

The Honor of Our People

Sermon From
The Feast Of The Assumption 2012
At the moment of the Blessed Mother’s visitation, when St. John the Baptist leapt in the womb of Elizabeth, Our Lord was only three days old in the womb of the Virgin Mary. This is a biblical condemnation of the modern belief that the life of the child only begins after birth – an argument used to excuse the murder of the unborn.

The Blessed Mother did not carry herself to Heaven by her own power, she was assumed, body and soul, by the power of Almighty God. She was raised to the highest position in Heaven, second to the Holy Trinity, because of the degree of divine life she possessed. Sanctifying grace makes us lovable in the eyes of God, and it is the greatest of God’s gifts. The first fruit of Sanctifying Grace is sublime and supernatural divine love. We are not meant for this life. There is a place destined for us where there is no more sorrow or fear, and the Assumption of the Blessed Mother is the promise that one day we might enjoy it.
