Become a Catechumen Again

This Sunday marks the beginning of a new season in the liturgical year.  The liturgy is the official prayer of Christ through the Church, and our union with Christ in his prayer makes our prayers efficacious.  This is the season for us to prepare for Lent by reminding us why we must do penance.  In the beginning God created something good, but Adam fell and introduced sin into the world.  We live with the consequences of original sin every day.  We spend a lifetime trying to eliminate the selfishness with which we are all born.  We become keenly aware of our sins now, so we may fight them better during Lent.  We must continue to learn about our Faith as the catechumens and find out what attachments are holding us back from God.  Let us all embark on this retreat together.

The Hymn of Charity

We are judged primarily by love.  This Epistle for today tells us that charity removes anger and evil thoughts.  Although anger can be justified and good, it can also be inordinate and sinful.  We must be patient with others, but especially with ourselves.  When they fall, those who are full of pride become impatient with themselves.  The humble thank God even for allowing them to fall to teach them how dependent they are.  We should petition God for our needs with all patience, knowing that God will answer our prayers in His own good time.  We must have a constant resolution to reject our sins and even our imperfections.

Distrust of Self

Many of the Epistles of St. Paul were dictated by him and written by his fellow disciples.  He was being attacked by false Christians, so in this Epistle he attempts to bring back the faithful who were led astray.  St. Paul’s great lesson is to distrust ourselves.  This season is the realization of original sin, but this week we learn about actual sins.  We know that we suffer in this life because of sin.  In the Gospel for this Mass Our Lord demonstrates that there is meaning behind all the words of Scripture.  We must respond completely in giving ourselves to God.

May Darkness Be Dispelled

Feast of the Purification 2015
This is one of the earliest feasts in honor of the Blessed Virgin.  In the Mosaic Law women underwent a juridical purification after birth.  Although it was not necessary for the Blessed Mother to receive any purification, out of humility and submission to the law, she participated in this ceremony.  This is the Mass of candles, and from the earliest days of the Church the candle has been used as a sacramental representing Christ Himself.  Today we pray that the light of Christ will dispel the darkness of vice in our hearts and strengthen us against the temptations of the devil.

It Is Not Easy

The Epistle tells us that if we are to put our efforts into anything it should be something that really matters.  Not for the perishable rewards given in sports but for the eternal reward of Heaven.  These three Sundays are for an examination of conscience.  We should be asking during these days what we have done in our life that has truly mattered.  It is not easy to be a Catholic, because it means we will have enemies in this life.  The opinions of men do not affect our eternity.  It does not matter how we begin our life, but how we end it.  We must live with distrust of self and knowledge of our dependence on God.

Combating Evil

3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2015
In today’s Epistle St. Paul is telling the Christians of Rome to be at peace as much as possible with all men.  We must make an answer to God for all we do, even our idle words.  We make converts by the good example we give as Catholics.  During His public life, Christ desired to show that He was the Son of God and the only means of salvation.  The enemies of Christ, because of their jealousy, criticized Christ for the miracles He worked.  We must battle the evil of the world and within ourselves.

Pray Ardently

We must pray like we truly mean the words being said, and we must do so without ceasing.  We have a need to show forth the feelings that are deep inside us.  This is why we have external expressions of love and adoration to God, such as genuflections.  We must call out, as the blind man in the Gospel, “Son of God, save me!”  The prayers we offer with confidence, perseverance, faith, trust, and love are sure to be heard and answered.

Conversion of Life

We are reminded at this Mass that we are in need of a conversion of life.  However, since knowledge does not equal virtue, so we must place ourselves in a retreat from the world in order to accomplish this goal.  We must have a true desire to convert ourselves and we must pray earnestly.  Perseverance in prayer is our only assurance of salvation, but it must be with all our hearts.  We are all called to sanctity, and there is no better time to follow the examples of the saints that came before us.

We have begun a new season, and we are in a transition preparing us for Lent.  We must be aware of what we are struggling against in this season of examination.  This Sunday focuses especially on Original Sin and the story of Adam and Eve.  We have been thrown out of the Garden of Paradise in this season.  We live in a world where we are distracted and even addicted to games.  Sports and the worship of the body are not leading us to Heaven.  We must examine and remove our own addictions to these worldly idols.

A Heart of Virtue

We must remember that, in addition to the frequent reception of the sacraments, we should make use of the sacramentals of the Church. The blessed candle is one of the greatest sacramentals because it is a symbol of Christ, the Light of the World. Votive candles which are lit in the chapel represent our prayer even after we leave.

There are many lessons taught by the readings of this Mass. St. Paul tells us to put on a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. The practice of these virtues will bring us directly to Heaven when we die. Humility is particularly effective in overcoming sins of the flesh. It is only through these virtues and the love of God that we will have true peace.
