Quinquagesima Sunday 2018
This season is almost over and our training for Lent should be completed. Abraham is emphasized during these days because of his fidelity to God when so many others were not. He was willing to sacrifice his own son, Isaac, who was a willing victim as Christ would be in the future. Today strengthens our faith and spurs us on to love God better.
Seek first God’s holiness and that begins with the virtue of Faith. We need that to achieve everything worthwhile in our daily activity. We should strive to learn more and more about God. The acts of the virtues produce the fruits of the Holy Ghost which give us a certain sweetness in living the spiritual life and thereby encourage us to draw closer to the Blessed Trinity.
St. Joseph was a holy man who fulfilled the law with devotion and heart-felt piety. He was chosen to be the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to be the foster-father of the Son of God. In that capacity he was the image of God the Father. As the redemption depended on Our Lady’s “Fiat” at the Annunciaton so it was protected by her marriage to St. Joseph and his protection of her and the Holy Infant.
Our sins have caused the death of God on the cross and from the Sacred Heart comes the means of repairing this. Ash Wednesday is the call to conversion and the ashes we receive remind us of our own death and that this may be our last opportunity to change. Pope Pius X said Ignorance is the greatest of our time for Catholics so study of the Faith during Lent is an important penance.
Father speaks on the topic of our fallen nature versus grace, wherein grace acts as a curb to our tendencies to rail against and provoke our neighbor. As Christ was often criticized by the crowd while he was preaching, so we are subject to the same sort of provocations by our neighbors. As He bared wrongs patiently, so must we with the help of grace that He sends us. It’s easy to fly off the handle but far more difficult, and profitable to our souls, to suffer in silence and leave the matter to God Himself. Jesus was moved by the tears of the widow and so will be moved by our tears and sufferings at Judgment time.
Ash Wednesday 2016 We hear the words of Genesis today that we are dust and unto dust we shall return. The Church tells us these words to help us remain humble. Following the example of Job, even in the midst of troubles and sufferings we must remain docile to God’s will. Practicing penance will avert the punishments of God, but we must have sincere sorrow from the depths of our heart for having offended Him. Fasting, almsgiving, prayer, and spiritual reading, are powerful means of sanctification. However, we should never allow these good works to become a show or hypocritical. God gave us a free will so that we may choose to love Him. This is not a time of sorrow, but one of inner peace and happiness. #20160210K
2nd Sunday after Epiphany 2016 St. Vincent was ordained a deacon and was arrested with his bishop under Roman persecution. While imprisoned St. Vincent began preaching to those around him, and even the tortures he endured did nothing to silence him. St. Vincent resisted the slightest compromise. It was only by his continuous prayers that he remained faithful to Our Lord. May we all be as faithful as this great saint.
The theme of the feast of the Epiphany is continued in the text for today’s Mass. St. Paul instructs the converted pagans in Rome to be patient with their neighbors. At the wedding feast of Cana, Our Lord made it clear to His holy Mother that the will of His Father came before every other consideration. The first miracle He performed sanctified marriage in a special way and increased the faith of the Apostles. #20160117K
At the beginning of the new liturgical year, we are reminded of many great truths. Advent is a time of preparation. God had His Chosen People wait in anticipation of His first coming in mercy, and He has His chosen people once again waiting for His return in glory. Our Lord, as the great Pontiff, bridges the gap between the Creator and the creature, between the infinite and the finite, in His Incarnation. With the beginning of the liturgical year, our journey to become more Christlike is renewed once more. This progressive incorporation into Christ can only be accomplished through participation in the Mass, devout reception of the sacraments, and unceasing prayer. #20151129M
Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men. In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us. We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell. Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them. If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God. #20151102
Sermon From The 5th Sunday After Pentecost 2015 Fraternal charity is a theme of this Mass. Tomorrow is the feast of St. Peter and he is a great person who was trained well by Our Lord. A test of courage is the ability to endure challenges patiently. We should imitate the saints in seeking peace and pursuing it. Our love of God is seen in how much we love neighbor too. Our society is deteriorating and is seen in its acceptance of the four sins that cry out to God for vengeance. A heavy chastisement is awaiting us. The Sacred Heart lamented that even consecrated souls are guilty. By our baptisms all of us have been dedicated to the Blessed Trinity and should fulfill our vows of fidelity. God will triumph in the end with a victory as seen by Gideon. #20150628M
