What the Transfiguration Promises

At the Transfiguration, Christ took three apostles that represent three virtues. St. Peter represents duty, St. James represents knowledge, and St. John represents love. It was as if Christ relaxed and allowed His Divinity to shine through His human nature. This was shown to the apostles and to us to save us from discouragement in suffering. We see the glory that is in store. It is an insight into Heaven. We should not be fooled by the world and its false promises but always remember that in our Communions we received the Source of all good.

Lent Has Formally Begun

Our sins are an infinite offense, because they offend an infinite God and although we cannot make adequate reparation, Our Lord has still instructed us to do penance.  This penance can only be performed with God’s supernatural help of grace.  We are guided by the Church throughout Lent and given the weapons of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.  When we use these weapons well, Lent becomes the best time of the year.  It is the time when we are preparing for our heavenly delights.

Penitential Mercy

Although many outside the Faith look askance at the penances Catholics perform, they are unable to explain the meaning of Christ’s words, “unless you do penance you will perish.”  We have great attachments to our vices, and it is only through grace and penance that we can learn truly to hate our sins.  The season of Lent is a time of mercy.  We receive this mercy through confessing our sins and receiving the sacraments.  We must pray the Confiteor and beg God to help us, with a true conviction of amending our lives.

We have begun a new season, and we are in a transition preparing us for Lent.  We must be aware of what we are struggling against in this season of examination.  This Sunday focuses especially on Original Sin and the story of Adam and Eve.  We have been thrown out of the Garden of Paradise in this season.  We live in a world where we are distracted and even addicted to games.  Sports and the worship of the body are not leading us to Heaven.  We must examine and remove our own addictions to these worldly idols.

Believe And It Shall Be Done To You

We must first love God, then our neighbor, and then love ourselves according to God’s Will.  The three theological virtues are freely given, not earned.  When we reach heaven, faith and hope will no longer be needed, only charity will remain.  We practice charity, which is true love for neighbor, even when we do not like him – even when he attacks us.  Just as Our Lord saved the Apostles who were in danger on the stormy sea, we should never feel as if we are doomed.  We must tell God how deeply we believe and ask Him to increase our belief.

Love Never Fails

This beautiful Mass for the Holy Souls in Purgatory has its own sequence entitled “Dies Irae” which means the Day of Wrath.  It is a warning to the living of the judgments of God but ends with hope of happiness in heaven.  Today is proof that the debt for our forgiven sins can be removed and that Divine Love has in fact created Purgatory for that purpose.  Obstacles still persist in the soul after death and impede our entrance into glory.  These can and will be removed by a purification that severs souls from anything that still holds them from ascending.  What do non-Catholics do in the face of death?  Our consoling doctrine can teach them about God’s merciful love.

Surprising Apostle

This sermon tells the story of Saint Matthew who was unique and unlike any of the other disciples chosen by Our Lord.  However, this sermon includes multiple talks including loyalty and friendship with the example of the friends to the man who was lowered down to Christ in today’s Gospel.  Also, the vice of covetousness is warned against as seen in people of pride and those who have a grasping desire for power and wealth.  We are instructed to pray with faith because our prayers lack faith and this is the cause of the lack of miracles today.  Lastly, we are reminded that repentance for sins is paramount and a clear conscience allows one to pray better.

Much Is Forgiven Those Who Love

Tomorrow is the feast of the great penitent, St. Mary Magdalen.  Early in life she fell into sin which made her like Satan.  However, Our Lord’s love frees us from sin.  Some, like the Pharisees, rejected His love.  Even mortal sins can be forgiven by a perfect act of contrition.  The Blessed Mother will help us as St. Mary Magdalen discovered.  Christ praised our saint for choosing the better way in contemplation and giving all as shown by her anointing Him with oil.  After the Epistle and Gospel follows an instruction on the priesthood and religious life which stresses the importance of zeal for the commandments as expressed through the vows so thereby we lay up treasures in heaven.

The shedding of Our Lord’s Precious Blood is a sublime and essential truth of our Faith.  Many clergy and laity have easily fallen away because they did not appreciate this and other truths of God.  We fall by degrees and not mortally immediately.  We must maintain our fervor and love in this life because it is more important on earth than knowing much.  We can only love that for which we have suffered.  The history of this feast shows its importance in modern times to overcome the particular dangers that attack Christ and His Mystical Body.  The Blood of the Savior redeemed us and is the everlasting token of how much He loves us.  We are granted to receive this life giving refreshment whenever we receive Holy Communion.

Why God Permits Suffering

Today is also Father’s Day.  This vocation is attacked in our society and only adds to the suffering and sacrifices that fathers must endure for the sake of their families but God always hears their prayers and heaven awaits them.  The Black Forest fires that have been destroying many homes in our area have even threatened us but God has preserved us.  We have many spiritual helps to protect us and all are welcome here in case of danger.  Things like this make people wonder how evils exist in a world created by our heavenly Father Who saw that all was good.  Non-Catholics are at a loss to answer such questions and some conclude that God cannot exist.  We know that there are many reasons why we suffer and imitating Our Lord on the cross and winning eternal glory is certainly one of them.
