The Power of an Act of Mercy

At this time of the year, the Church, by means of her liturgy, begins to bring our attention to the last judgment and our end.  We must prepare at all times for our death.  How much time do we set aside for prayer every day?  If we are not prayerful in life, we will not be prayerful at our death.  All Catholics have the obligation to bring others to the true Church.  This great act of mercy could win someone the gift of faith.  We cannot do anything pleasing to God without His help, so let us beg Him at this Mass to bestow that help upon us.

The Leprosy of Sin

The undying devotion of even a brute animal towards its master puts us to shame.  How much should we love our Savior and how unwilling should we be to leave His side?  Today we are reminded of our need for God’s help.  The disease of sin that we carry is far worse than that of the lepers in the Gospel.  Their disease did not make them enemies of God as ours does.  We act as if there is nothing wrong with us, despite our sins.  We must never forget what we owe to God, so that we will not remain ungrateful in the face of God’s generosity in our lives.

Separated From Our Father

St. Jerome explains the meaning of Our Lord’s quote, “Call no man Father,” telling the faithful that it refers to giving man the honor due to God alone.  The theme for this Sunday is hope.  We have much to endure in this battle we wage against the devil.  After Adam fell the world was thrown into chaos and we struggle interiorly with concupiscence and the pride of life.  We remain hopeful because Our Lord told us that if we ask the Father anything in His name, it shall be given to us.  True Catholics believe what we are instructed to believe and obediently conform our intellect to the teaching of the Church.

The Compendium of All Religion

Feast of The Sacred Heart 2024
This feast was created relatively recently in the history of the Church, yet it was foreshadowed even in the Old Testament.  As God took the rib from Adam’s side while he slept to form his great love, Eve, so while Christ slept in death on the Cross the Church was brought forth from the wound in His side.  In this Epistle St. Paul speaks in utter amazement about the love of the Sacred Heart.  The essence of religion is found in the love of God the Son for God the Father, and all our prayers find their value when they are united with this love.  Even if we possess all the faith in the world, we will still not be saved if we do not have love.  Anyone who has loved has known the pain of love.  Can we even imagine the pain of Christ’s Heart when He saw how little He would be loved in return?

Where Are The Martyrs?

Pentecost is called the birthday of the Catholic Church because, although it was conceived on the Cross, this is the first day the Church manifested herself in the world.  Not only every human being, but all nations and governments are called to convert to Christ.  True Catholics reject the false tenets of religious indifferentism.  The Holy Ghost expresses God’s love for us because He is the Person of Love.  In these days when there is such great cowardice within the Church, we pray for the virtue of fortitude to help us persevere in the face of adversity.  The Holy Ghost will provide us with the strength of the saints and martyrs.

The youth of our day are in the greatest need of the sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Ghost gives an outpouring of strength and a unique participation in the share of Our Lord’s passion and death in this sacrament. In His weakness we receive our strength. The Gifts of the Holy Ghost are made far more active in our souls. It is only with these helps that we may combat the attacks of the devil and his human agents in the world. The youth are the particular victims of these dangers, and it is only with God’s strength that they will stay faithful.

Confirmation Saturday 2024
Confirmation marks a new outpouring of the graces of the Holy Ghost.  At Baptism we are able to teach the Faith in our own name, but with Confirmation we are given a new strength and the ability to teach and defend the Faith in the name of the whole Church.  In days of persecution, it was the Confirmed who refused to flee and remained to defend the Faith and suffer for Christ.  Those who are Confirmed are made instruments for the spread of Our Lord’s kingdom on Earth.

The Great Evil of Venial Sin

St. Paul calls us to make “even greater progress,” but in order to do so, we must begin attacking our habits of venial sin.  Mortal sins kill the soul,  but venial sins are the great obstacle to sanctification.  These lesser sins can easily be overlooked if we are not on guard against them.  They lessen God’s grace in our soul and they kill fervor, making spiritual practices difficult.  Our habits of venial sin will inevitably lead us to serious sin.  This disease of the soul must be combatted with custody of the mind, sincere desire of amendment, and with hatred and horror of any offense against God, no matter how slight it may appear.

Impurity and Penance

We are particularly the objects of temptation during this season in which God is calling us to sanctity.  During the temptation of Christ in the desert, Our Lord was not drawn to the evil as we are.  St. Margaret of Cortona after discovering her lover’s body, made a complete conversion of life.  The great sin combatted during Lent is impurity.  Many vocations and many marriages are destroyed by pornography, which is now so accessible, even to little children.  Parents will be greatly punished if they are not vigilant in protecting their children from this danger to their souls.  Penance is a virtue that is infused by almighty God, which inclines a soul to hate its sins, because they offend almighty God.  It is up to us to make up for the sins we have committed.

The Real Battle

Our heart should remain forever in the chapel with Our Lord.  Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the great practices of Lent.  The words that were spoken by God to Adam and Eve after the Fall are repeated for us today with the distribution of blessed ashes.  We are reminded of our mortality and the passing glory of this world.  If we always remember our mortality, we will certainly avoid sin.  When we fast it not only makes us weak, but it also brings us closer to God.  Christ came to Earth to suffer and die for our sins, and without His suffering we would not be saved.  How much do we owe Him in penance; how much do we owe Him in love?
