The Fool’s Thoughts Are In His Mouth

Day 25th Sunday after Pentecost

The scripture passages remind us not to be guilty of detraction by speaking of the faults of others.  We are told that we may not like another person but we must still love that person in that we fervently desire and pray for their salvation.  Once a person’s reputation is damaged how can it be repaired?  A person who reveals the faults of others without cause is a fool who has his thoughts in his mouth whereas a wise man has his thoughts in his heart.  It is difficult sometimes to keep control of our tongue but this is precisely why we must do it so that the adage “we are Christians by our love” is truly the one we live by.  We must “sow the seeds of love not hate” to use an analogy from today’s gospel, lest we be among the “weeds gathered up to be burned at the harvest.”

Our Citizenship Is In Heaven

23rd Sunday after Pentecost 2016

St. Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians informs us that there were enemies of the cross even at that time in the early Church.   One example is Tertullian who was considered a father of the church but lapsed into heretical ideas later in life.  So, the inference for us is that we must not think too highly of ourselves lest we fall, especially in today’s world where there are so many temptations to draw us away from the Faith.  In the Gospel reading we see the immense power of Faith by the fact that the woman who simply touched the hem of Our Lord’s garment was healed of a troublesome issue of blood.  Her ailment had existed for twelve years and it was her Faith that healed her.  So much so shall we be healed of our imperfections through touching Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist through Faith in His healing power.

Bear Wrongs Patiently

15th Sunday after Pentecost 2016

Father speaks on the topic of our fallen nature versus grace, wherein grace acts as a curb to our tendencies to rail against and provoke our neighbor.  As Christ was often criticized by the crowd while he was preaching, so we are subject to the same sort of provocations by our neighbors.  As He bared wrongs patiently, so must we with the help of grace that He sends us.  It’s easy to fly off the handle but far more difficult, and profitable to our souls, to suffer in silence and leave the matter to God Himself.  Jesus was moved by the tears of the widow and so will be moved by our tears and sufferings at Judgment time.

Swaddling Clothes and a Manger

Christmas Midnight Mass 2015
We should pay special attention to the repetition of the phrase “swaddling clothes” in the Gospel account for today.  The importance of these swaddling clothes is found in the care and love shown to the Holy Infant.  Even though this Child was rejected by so many and was forced to be laid in a filthy feeding trough for animals found in a dark cave, there are those who still loved Him and cared for Him.  This is the story of Christ’s entire life – rejected by many but ardently loved by a few.  The Savior entered the world through the painless, virginal birth of His Mother.  This birth prophesied the Resurrection, in which Our Lord passed through the tomb with new life, while leaving the tomb shut.  On this feast, we celebrate the stupendous moment in which our Redeemer first appeared to mankind in the Flesh.  God the Father became father in a new way today, and all Heaven celebrates the birth of His Son.  On this feast, our sorrows are lifted and we look forward to a greater day to come.

Rededicate Yourselves!

1st Sunday of Advent 2015

At the beginning of the new liturgical year, we are reminded of many great truths.  Advent is a time of preparation.  God had His Chosen People wait in anticipation of His first coming in mercy, and He has His chosen people once again waiting for His return in glory.  Our Lord, as the great Pontiff, bridges the gap between the Creator and the creature, between the infinite and the finite, in His Incarnation.  With the beginning of the liturgical year, our journey to become more Christlike is renewed once more.  This progressive incorporation into Christ can only be accomplished through participation in the Mass, devout reception of the sacraments, and unceasing prayer.

The Remains of Sin

All Souls Day 2015

Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men.  In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us.  We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell.  Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.  All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them.  If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God.

We Must Desire Sanctity

All Saints Day 2015
Today we rejoice because this is the day on which the Church celebrates all her children who have overcome the world.  In the process by which a saint is canonized, it must be determined that they expressed nothing contrary to faith and morals, and that they practiced virtue in a heroic way.  After this, the Church waits for God to affirm the individual’s sanctity by miracles attributed to their intercession.  It is not enough for a Catholic merely to recite the Creed, he must believe it and practice it.  For every walk of life, there is a saint who has lived it as an example to follow.  Today we adore God as we honor His saints, and desire to make the little sacrifices necessary on our road to holiness.

The Master Of The Universe

Feast of Christ the King 2015
All Saints Day celebrates the canonized saints as well as the unknown saints in Heaven.  We are all called to imitate their virtues in our lifelong pursuit of sanctity.  The process of progressive incorporation into Christ mirrors the development of our natural lives.  We show reverence to the images of the saints because of what they represent and because of the favors that are given to us through them.

Catholics do not believe in freedom of religion or religious indifference but rather religious toleration.  Pope Pius XI wrote the encyclical Quas Primas in which he denounced men’s refusal to recognize God’s rights over all nations.  He instituted this feast to assert the truth of Christ’s royal power.  Catholics know that they belong to their Divine King, Who is God and Master of all.

Pray for a Merciful Heart

21st Sunday after Pentecost 2015
Most of us can think of a time during our life when we were slow to forgive one who asked for forgiveness.  The terrible crime of refusing forgiveness to those who sincerely ask for it is in direct contradiction to the Our Father, in which we ask that God forgive our trespasses as we forgive others.  Spiritual reading and the Holy Rosary are powerful weapons against the devil, as well as some of the greatest aids to living a true Christian life.  Every Catholic should be familiar with the 15 promises that the Blessed Mother made to those who devoutly pray the Rosary.

Spiritual Childhood

19th Sunday after Pentecost 2015
St. Francis is universally esteemed by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  Despite living many centuries apart, the lives of St. Frances and St. Thérèse share many similarities, particularly in regard to their practice of spiritual childhood.  The origins of this doctrine can be found in Our Lord’s words, “unless you become like this little child, you will not enter the kingdom of God.”  Spiritual childhood is closely linked to poverty of spirit, by which one receives a deep understanding of his need and utter helplessness.  This leads to childlike dependence on God’s grace.  Spiritual childhood is indispensable for all who wish to possess the Kingdom of God.
