We Thirst For The Water

Easter Vigil 2026
We are a liturgical people and during this week we are living the liturgy at its highest level.  Throughout this ceremony we will be taught repeatedly about the mysteries and sacraments.  Unafraid, we go out into the darkness of the devil’s world and ignite the Light of Christ to shine through that darkness.  Holy Mother Church reminds us of the power of the light and the power of the waters.  Because of the doubt of Moses, he was not permitted to lead the people into the Promised Land.  The enemies of the Church cannot make us doubt.  The propaganda of the devil will not succeed.  When the water has been anointed it becomes Christ’s and, after we are sprinkled with His water, we renew the promises of our baptism.  Christ then comes to us in the greatest of the sacraments – the Holy Eucharist.  Tonight we thirst for His arrival.

We Must Aim High

Good Friday 2026
On this day of great sorrow, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is considered too consoling.  This ceremony is so ancient that we can trace its origins back to the Apostolic age.  In the first part of this ceremony, we see the celebrant prostrate himself on the floor in an expression of the greatest sorrow for what we have done.  We should not be deluded into thinking we would have been heroic if we had lived alongside Christ.  At best we would have been cowards like the Apostles, at worst we would have been Judas.  May our Redeemer cast a look at us as He did for St. Peter, so we might be forever changed.  Our Lord is praying for us during this ceremony.  Christ chose to die in this way, not out of necessity, but so He might win our hearts.

Hail Our Triumphant King!

Palm Sunday 2026
The purpose of the liturgy is to enter into the life of Christ, and it is through the liturgy that we are sanctified.  In the Liturgy, time ceases and Heaven is brought to earth.  Unlike the triumphant, military marches which took place during Our Lord’s time, when He entered His city, it was in humility.  He did not lead His conquered, enslaved enemies in parade, but led His willing servants and followers.  A king can reign by right of birth, by right of conquest, or by election.  Our Lord is King in all three ways.  He is and will always remain King – King of those who accept Him and King of those who reject Him.  When we receive our palms and carry them with us into the world, we proclaim without hesitation or shame that we are followers of our triumphant Monarch, and we look forward to the day when the whole world will be forced to acknowledge His dominion.

Our Everlasting Reward

2nd Sunday in Lent 2026
Today’s liturgy recounts the Transfiguration of Our Lord so we, as the Apostles who witnessed it, may be encouraged by this vision of glory.  It is only in keeping our eyes fixed on our eternal goal that we will be able to endure the trials of our life.  We can gain some understanding of Heaven when contemplating the beauty of this world.  If God has made our land of exile so pleasing to behold, what must our eternal reward be like?  We are offered eternal life, in exchange for so little.  If we are to follow our Savior to Heaven we must take up our cross, especially during this Lenten season.  By participating in the ancient devotion of Stations of the Cross, we better appreciate the price paid for our redemption.

We Shall Perish Without Penance

1st Sunday in Lent 2026
We see in this Gospel account, not only how easily Our Lord overcame the devil, but also how we are to respond when faced with trials and temptations.  God permits us to be tempted in those areas where we are the weakest.  Although Christ did not feel the pull to commit sin, He was nevertheless assaulted by the evil spirits.

Christ told us, “Unless you do penance, you shall all perish,” and we make a firm resolution to do penance every time we make the Act of Contrition.  Penance is an infused virtue which inclines a man to hate his sins because they offend God.  We see the example of true penance in St. Mary Magdalene, who bears the title of “penitent.”

After the fall of Adam, all of creation turned against him.  All evil in the world is the consequence of sin.  We are all bound together through the solidarity of the human race, and we cause others to suffer, directly or indirectly, due to our own sins.  We must first turn away from evil and then we must do good.

The works of penance include the reception of ashes, the admission of our sins, and the acceptance of death as a punishment.  Our other works are prayer, fasting, alms, and study.

In the temptation of Christ, the devil first attempts to cause doubt in God’s help.  The devil attempts to make Christ compromise for power here on Earth.  There is no compromise with evil if we wish to enjoy a clear conscience and the happiness of Heaven.

No More Self-Sorrow

Ash Wednesday Evening 2026
Through the sacramental of ashes, we are reminded of our end.  We came from the dust, and because of our sins, we are destined to return to dust once again.  If we hope to be prepared on our deathbed we must make prayer second nature to us.  We are called to imitate the Son of God always, but especially this Lent.  The purpose of the penances of this season is not simply to suffer, but to suffer with the goal of raising our souls to heaven.  “In all thy works, remember thy last end and thou shalt never sin.”

Give All To Obtain All

Septuagesima Sunday 2026
The season of Septuagesima begins roughly 70 days before Easter.  Through the Nativity season we witnessed the Son of God physically and literally come to Earth to save His children.  Now, God will lift us up by His divine power.  We have the privilege to reform our lives; we have the ability to become holy.  It is a struggle we must all pass through to reach Heaven.  Our God already won the prize which St. Paul refers to, yet we must still run the race on the road to Heaven.  We are called to change this season.  The lukewarm will become fervent, the fervent will become perfect, the perfect will begin to practice heroic virtue.

The Eternal Wedding Feast

2nd Sunday after Epiphany 2026

St. Agnes had many suitors who asked for her hand in marriage, but she desired to remain a perpetual virgin.  The governor said that if she did not submit to marriage, they would forcefully take her virginity.  But she replied that God would protect her, and so He did.  Virginity is a virtue that is particularly pleasing to God.

This Gospel is a perfect example of the Virgin Mary fulfilling her role as Mediatrix of All Graces.  Those who would deny her this role are enemies of God.  The miracle of turning water into wine is a promise of the Mass which would be instituted, in which wine is turned into Christ’s Blood.  The entire universe revolves around the Mass.  Here on the altar we have Heaven renewed.  Heaven will be the eternal Mass and the eternal wedding feast.

Holy Anticipation

Sermon on the 4th Sunday of Advent 2025
Although he is not commemorated when his feast falls on a Sunday, St. Thomas the Apostle is a great saint who should be remembered by all Catholics. Because of his doubt, we were all given a proof of the bodily Resurrection of Our Lord. To this day we repeat his beautiful words: “My Lord and my God!”

This day is all about sorrow for our sins and preparation of the coming of Christ. In the early years of the Church, the Christians would gather in the ancient St. Peter’s Basilica for a vigil Mass. We pray just as the early Catholics that we will remain as faithful as possible during these last days of preparation. After asking for forgiveness for our sins, with a contrite heart, we should not think of ourselves anymore but fix our attention on God alone.

Requiem Æternam

All Souls Day Evening 2025
Although this is not a Holy Day of Obligation, faithful Catholics flock to the churches today so they may help the holy souls in Purgatory, who cannot help themselves.  Purgatory is a creation of love.  One must be perfect to enter Heaven, so God in His mercy gives souls a way to burn out the roots of their vices so they may freely receive their eternal reward.  This may be our very last All Souls’ Day Mass before we die.  The words “Requiem æternam done eis Domine” were found on the tombs of Christians of the third century.  The Church has adopted those words for this Mass.  We must take up the standard of the Catholics of years past and fervently pray for the dead.
