A Share In His Strength

11th Sunday after Pentecost 2024
Confirmation Sunday August 2024In Confirmation one receives a character, an increase of sanctifying grace, as well as special sacramental grace.  Through this sacrament we receive a greater share in Christ’s strength and victory on the cross.  Those confirmed are now adults in the Faith and are enabled to defend the Church publicly.  Confirmation is known as the Sacrament of the Holy Ghost because through it we are given a perfection of His seven gifts.  The Holy Ghost is the Person of Love and, if we pray for it, He will give us a share of the bond of union which exists among the Persons of the Trinity.

An Audience With The Almighty

10th Sunday after Pentecost 2024
Today’s liturgy is directed towards the proud.  St. Paul corrects the Corinthians who took pride in the gifts given to them by God and reminds them that these gifts are for the assistance of our neighbor.  An imperfect form of humility begins with a focus on self – our weakness, dependence, and need.  A more perfect humility remains focused on God and acknowledges both our gifts and shortcomings, without allowing pride to enter.  With prayer we can obtain true humility.  God offers us an audience at all times of the day or night.  Without asking Him for the graces necessary, we will not obtain salvation, but when we pray in all humility, we invite His assistance into our lives.

Our Hope in His Blood

Feast of the Precious Blood 2024
The devotion to the Most Precious Blood encompasses every aspect of our Faith, because it is through the merits of Christ’s Blood that all good things come to us.  The sacrifice of the Son of God surpasses all the sacrifices of mankind in every conceivable way.  Just as the Blood of Our Lord flowed from the wound in His side, the devotion to the Precious Blood flows from the devotion to the Sacred Heart.  In honoring the Sacred Heart, we honor Our Lord’s great love and mercy, while devotion to the Precious Blood pays homage to the fruit of that love in the Redemption.  Even our ability to give adequate thanksgiving to our Redeemer comes through the Eucharistic Body and Blood of the altar.  It is only in the infinite merits of the Precious Blood that we have hope for the future.

Separated From Our Father

4th Sunday after Pentecost 2024
St. Jerome explains the meaning of Our Lord’s quote, “Call no man Father,” telling the faithful that it refers to giving man the honor due to God alone.  The theme for this Sunday is hope.  We have much to endure in this battle we wage against the devil.  After Adam fell the world was thrown into chaos and we struggle interiorly with concupiscence and the pride of life.  We remain hopeful because Our Lord told us that if we ask the Father anything in His name, it shall be given to us.  True Catholics believe what we are instructed to believe and obediently conform our intellect to the teaching of the Church.

The Compendium of All Religion

Feast of The Sacred Heart 2024
This feast was created relatively recently in the history of the Church, yet it was foreshadowed even in the Old Testament.  As God took the rib from Adam’s side while he slept to form his great love, Eve, so while Christ slept in death on the Cross the Church was brought forth from the wound in His side.  In this Epistle St. Paul speaks in utter amazement about the love of the Sacred Heart.  The essence of religion is found in the love of God the Son for God the Father, and all our prayers find their value when they are united with this love.  Even if we possess all the faith in the world, we will still not be saved if we do not have love.  Anyone who has loved has known the pain of love.  Can we even imagine the pain of Christ’s Heart when He saw how little He would be loved in return?

Communion of Reparation

Feast of Corpus Christi 2024
We should strive to better understand the feast of Corpus Christi from both a historical and doctrinal perspective.  The Church is called to celebrate today with even greater joy and reverence knowing that the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist is so ignored, unknown, and attacked.  The Holy Eucharist is both a sacrifice and a sacrament.  The sacrifice is remembered on Holy Thursday, while the sacramental aspect is celebrated today.  Christ deliberately called for two consecrations at the Mass, so that under the separation of these signs the mystical sacrifice would take place.  We are at the Cross in a mystical way, and receiving God in this sacrament brings us into the Trinitarian life.  We must not only adore Our Lord and thank Him today, but also make reparation for all our sins and those of our fellow man.

Lest You Lose Your Way

Confirmation Sunday 2024
The youth of our day are in the greatest need of the sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Ghost gives an outpouring of strength and a unique participation in the share of Our Lord’s passion and death in this sacrament. In His weakness we receive our strength. The Gifts of the Holy Ghost are made far more active in our souls. It is only with these helps that we may combat the attacks of the devil and his human agents in the world. The youth are the particular victims of these dangers, and it is only with God’s strength that they will stay faithful.

Milites Christi

Confirmation Saturday 2024
Confirmation marks a new outpouring of the graces of the Holy Ghost.  At Baptism we are able to teach the Faith in our own name, but with Confirmation we are given a new strength and the ability to teach and defend the Faith in the name of the whole Church.  In days of persecution, it was the Confirmed who refused to flee and remained to defend the Faith and suffer for Christ.  Those who are Confirmed are made instruments for the spread of Our Lord’s kingdom on Earth.

The Prerequisite of Charity

Holy Thursday 2024
These are the most sacred days of the liturgical year, because they make present the very act of our Redemption.  The Holy Oils, from the Mass of the Chrism, receive their efficacy from the Holy Eucharist.  Today is the birthday of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which was offered in anticipation of Christ’s death on the Cross the following day.  A gift of Faith is required to believe the dogma of the Holy Eucharist.  The Holy Oils made this morning are prepared to sanctify us.  The exorcisms performed over these oils drive away the influence of the devil from the oils themselves and from all whom they will anoint.

From Dust to Dust

Ash Wednesday 2024
The Church reminds us of the fate that awaits all men.  We are mortal and destined to return to dust.  The sacramental of blessed ashes reminds us of our mortality and also the transient nature of worldly glory.  From the triumphant Roman generals to the Byzantine emperors,  a Memento Mori has been a common practice to remind men that if their hearts are set on perishable things, their souls will perish with them.  For good Catholics this is not a season of sorrow but of liberation from the attachments of the world.  We should see every day we are given as a merciful call from God for a conversion of life.
