St. Paul wrote the epistle to the Colossians while he was imprisoned.  In it, St. Paul emphasized the supremacy of Our Lord over all creatures and His equality with God the Father.  Mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience are virtues rarely found among Catholics today.  It is through charity that we reach perfection, the intimate union with God.  Charity unites and informs all the other virtues, changing them into true expressions of love.  A gift is only valuable when it comes from love.  If we do not increase in charity, the good works we perform will not increase our glory in Heaven.  We should consider how much we have grown in holiness after so many years of being a Catholic.  This Gospel contains one of the few parables for which Christ gave a direct explanation. It is the perfect parable for our own time.

Love Never Fails

This beautiful Mass for the Holy Souls in Purgatory has its own sequence entitled “Dies Irae” which means the Day of Wrath.  It is a warning to the living of the judgments of God but ends with hope of happiness in heaven.  Today is proof that the debt for our forgiven sins can be removed and that Divine Love has in fact created Purgatory for that purpose.  Obstacles still persist in the soul after death and impede our entrance into glory.  These can and will be removed by a purification that severs souls from anything that still holds them from ascending.  What do non-Catholics do in the face of death?  Our consoling doctrine can teach them about God’s merciful love.

St. Francis & St. Thérèse

St. Francis is greatly misunderstood in our day but was, in fact, a true son of the Church.  By his words and example, he made innumerable converts.  The Gospel for the Mass of his feast day emphasizes his charity.  He was an utterly selfless man.  The Little Flower, St. Thérèse, despite all the differences between her life and St. Francis’, shared many similarities to him in spirit.  She promised to spend her Heaven doing good on Earth.  Poverty of spirit makes one recognize his nothingness.  We must remember that sometimes God sends us suffering to open our eyes to the truth.

Surprising Apostle

This sermon tells the story of Saint Matthew who was unique and unlike any of the other disciples chosen by Our Lord.  However, this sermon includes multiple talks including loyalty and friendship with the example of the friends to the man who was lowered down to Christ in today’s Gospel.  Also, the vice of covetousness is warned against as seen in people of pride and those who have a grasping desire for power and wealth.  We are instructed to pray with faith because our prayers lack faith and this is the cause of the lack of miracles today.  Lastly, we are reminded that repentance for sins is paramount and a clear conscience allows one to pray better.

Our Lady’s Sovereignty

The time between the Assumption and the feast of the Seven Sorrows is considered Our Lady’s thirty days.  The Mass texts of these feasts and that of the Immaculate Heart show her quality as Co-Redemptrix.  This adds fervor to the devotion we already have to our heavenly Queen and Mother.  The depictions of her most pure Heart, as in the Miraculous Medal, show her dependence on the Redemptive Incarnation even more than ours.  We are given confidence to draw close to her as our essential intercessor with her Divine Son.  Theologically we are speaking of her as the secondary instrumental cause of our salvation.  From here we are moved to join her in her sorrows and we practice mortification in union with Our Lord’s sacrifice on the cross.

Much Is Forgiven Those Who Love

Tomorrow is the feast of the great penitent, St. Mary Magdalen.  Early in life she fell into sin which made her like Satan.  However, Our Lord’s love frees us from sin.  Some, like the Pharisees, rejected His love.  Even mortal sins can be forgiven by a perfect act of contrition.  The Blessed Mother will help us as St. Mary Magdalen discovered.  Christ praised our saint for choosing the better way in contemplation and giving all as shown by her anointing Him with oil.  After the Epistle and Gospel follows an instruction on the priesthood and religious life which stresses the importance of zeal for the commandments as expressed through the vows so thereby we lay up treasures in heaven.

Her Extraordinary Magnanimity

Among the peoples living at the time of Our Lord’s coming, there was an anxious anticipation of great change for the world.  We are once again living in a time when the world anticipates a coming change.

This day commemorates the day on which the Virgin Mary became the Mother of God.  It was in the midst of prayer when the angel appeared to her.  When she is referred to as “full of grace” it implies that she was pleasing to God in the highest degree.  The angel did not command Our Lady but requested her consent to this greatest of all vocations.  It was only because of her esteem for the angelic virtue of purity that she asked how this could happen.  The Virgin Mary was truly heroic by choosing to sacrifice her life of secluded contemplation for a life fraught with sufferings.  She realized the dignity and responsibility of the path laid out for her, yet she had no hesitation because of her absolute trust in divine assistance.

His Last Will and Testament

Despite being the season of the Passion, the altar and celebrant are draped in white, because the Church cannot conceal her joy and gratitude for the gifts she has received today.  In preparation for His death, Christ promulgates His last will and testament for His offspring, but unlike an earthly father who can only pass on his wealth, Our Lord gives His children His enduring presence in the Holy Eucharist, and the means of perpetuating it in the priesthood.  All the gifts we receive from Christ, especially those of this day, are given freely and lovingly.  We should value these gifts above everything.  The institution of the Mass is the supreme gift of Christ.  Through this sacrifice the Son offers homage and adoration to His Father.  Through it we make reparation for our sins.  In the Sacrament of the Altar is truly present, not only grace, but the Author of all grace.  Now that the priesthood is so reviled and attacked, we should appreciate it more than ever.  Christians of the past were willing to shed their blood in defense of these awesome gifts – are we?

The Guardian of Vocations

Feast of St. Joseph 2013
St. Joseph is called true spouse of the Blessed Mother and foster father of the Son of God.  Whatever their vocation in life may be, the reason many do not follow their calling is because they lack confidence.  It is true that we should not trust in ourselves, however we must never forget that we can do all things in Him Who gives us strength.  It is the combination of humility and magnanimity that makes a truly great man.  God gives to each vocation what that person needs to accomplish his or her destiny, and we see this especially in the singular gifts given to St. Joseph.

The Queen of Angels loves him for all eternity in a way different than she loves the rest of mankind.  She loves him as a wife.  The marriage was true and real, although unconsummated and virginal, and without this marriage there would be no Incarnation.

We are in a war with the enemies of Christ who have seized control of the Church.  Even the so-called traditionalists are self-righteous and lacking in charity.  However, we are given a leader who has not abandoned us in these desperate times – the Holy Protector of the Church, St. Joseph.

King and Lawgiver

4th Sunday In Lent – Laetare Sunday 2013
We pray for the election of a holy pope, which is so necessary in these times of unprecedented crisis in the Church.  Although we have little confidence in any natural means to accomplish this desire, we place our hope in God and His divine intervention.

This is one of the two days when rose, the liturgical color of mitigated joy, is used.  It is also called the “Day of the Golden Rose.”  On this day a papal procession carried a golden rose, which had been blessed and placed on the altar during the Mass, and gifted this rose to a certain Catholic monarch as a sign of the pope’s favor.

We are given a foretaste of the pleasure and joy of Eternal beatitude with every reception of the Holy Eucharist.  How many people join the Catholic Church for the simple reason that they desire to be intimately united to Christ in this sacrament?

Every part of the Bible is true, but we must remember that it can be interpreted in the literal, the applied and the typical sense.  Events of the New Testament are foreshadowed by the events of the Old Testament.  The readings of the Divine Office this week give an example of the typical sense of Holy Scripture in Moses, who foreshadows Our Lord in our redemption.
