This season is almost over and our training for Lent should be completed. Abraham is emphasized during these days because of his fidelity to God when so many others were not. He was willing to sacrifice his own son, Isaac, who was a willing victim as Christ would be in the future. Today strengthens our faith and spurs us on to love God better.

During this sacred time before Lent we should examine our conscience so we know the predominant fault we will battle through penance once Ash Wednesday arrives. St. Paul is our spiritual director for this as we think about original and actual sin. The young especially have an opportunity to respond to grace and be instruments of sanctity in the world today.

Septuagesima Sunday 2018
This talk after Mass begins with the reasons for arming the faithful against the pernicious innovations that they face today. Then the Gospel for Septuagesima Sunday is explained. The parable about the hiring of workers to go into the field is the story of how Christ through His Church seeks to save souls. First there is the invitation which is a divine power to follow Our Lord. This impulse can come at anytime in life, even at the eleventh hour. Once accepted the recipient of this grace must correspond to it and work out his salvation. Heaven is earned through cooperating with the actual graces God sends us.

3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2018
This is the Third Sunday after the Epiphany and the theme of the season is still proclaimed: undying faith in the Son of God becoming Man. St. Paul, whose feast this week celebrates his conversion, reminds us in the Epistle to be, as much as possible, at peace with all men. In the Gospel Our Lord performs a miracle in curing the leper and then another miracle for the servant of the centurion. This account again emphasizes the showing of His Divinity through His Humanity to the Jews in the leper and to the Gentiles in the servant of the pagan centurion. We should take up the prayer of the soldier, especially at Holy Communion, and ask that our souls may be healed. Then we can hear those beautiful words to the leper that made him clean of that terrible disease.

Gaudete Sunday 2017
As we approach Christmas, St. John the Baptist is our example of how to come closer to Our Lord. We have grace and should never be discouraged because victory is ours. Beg God for great love just as the saints did. Receiving Christ in Holy Communion should change us and His coming in Bethlehem should do the same.

To encourage us during this penitential season preparing for Christmas the Church reminds us, especially the Gentiles, of God’s mercy and the reason for us to hope. Despite all the difficulties of life we have tremendous confidence that Our Savior will take care of us because His upcoming birth is proof of that. He is the Light of the World and dispels the darkness outside.

Advent is a time of penance and this year it is a shorter season to prepare for Christmas. We need to appreciate everyday as a gift enabling us to pray and grow in spiritual progress. Ask the Blessed Mother and the saints to help us in this important task.

Pray for the faithful departed, especially those from this chapel. We must appreciate how perfectly pure and reverent one needs to be in order to enter Gods presence. Holy Souls are in peace and depend on the living to be purified. Have mercy on them because the hand of the Lord has touched them. Have Masses offered for them. Our known vices must be eliminated now with merit or else they will be the cause of our punishment without merit. A word to the wise is sufficient.

The Roman officer in today’s Gospel had to have his faith perfected by Our Lord and once that was done then Christ cured his son and his whole household believed. We must appreciate the precious commodity of time and use it well, especially by learning to pray always.

The Introit tells us that God is the salvation of His people and anyone can call upon Our Lord and be converted. The Epistle teaches us about the need to control anger and not let it be excessive. It is also part of the teaching that one must be angry when it is justified in the case of an evil situation. Christ directed the parable in this Gospel to all of us. As being part of the Mystical Body of Jesus we are subject to persecution in a similar way to our Head who offered Himself on the cross for our sins.
