19th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The 19th Sunday after Pentecost reminds us not to neglect the divine invitation to the marriage feast and to come prepared wearing our wedding garment symbolizing grace.  Clothed as a new man we will put aside sin and follow the commandments.  Today is also the feast of St. Jerome, the translator of our missal texts and patron of Scripture study.  This then provided an opportunity to refute several attacks against Catholics concerning the Bible.

We Cannot Serve Two Masters

14th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Epistle and Gospel for the 14th Sunday after Pentecost make as clear as black and white the battle between good and evil.  We must renounce our vices and not let anything stand in the way of our progress towards God and Heaven.  As we can fall by degrees from faults, to venial sins and finally mortal ones, so we can rise by degrees to sanctity.  Today is the day to start on the road to holiness.

Depart From Me For I Am A Sinful Man

4th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The humility of St. Peter in the Gospel is a virtue we all must practice as a promise of heaven.  We should be as attentive as possible at Mass so we can pray well.  We witness the death of Our Lord again during the Holy Sacrifice and we hear His last words “into Thy hands I commend My spirit”.

Your Treasure Is In Your Heart

Fourth Sunday after Easter 2018
In the Epistle for this Sunday St. James describes God as the immutable Father of Lights who wills the salvation of all men.  Any who are lost are victims of their own malice in refusing the graces offered by God.  Our response must be one of love which will guide us along the way to holiness and love of God and neighbor.

Strangers In This World

Third Sunday After Easter 2018
The Collect of the Mass for the Third Sunday after Easter instructs us to think of ourselves as passing through this life on the way to eternity.  The Gospel recounts the words of Our Lord at the Last Supper about the little while before the apostles will see Him again.  In comparison to eternity our lives are only a little while.  We must pray and be encouraged that our faithfulness for just a little while will gain us the happiness of heaven.

Do Not Be Distracted

Palm Sunday 2018
Palm Sunday is an encapsulation of all of Holy Week as the triumph of the Resurrection is seen with the entry of Our Lord into the Holy City and the sacrifice of the Cross in the Passion.  We must not waste this week nor be distracted.  We can win souls to Christ by imitating the virtues Jesus showed on this day: humility, meekness and obedience.

Be Prepared To Enter Heaven

Laetare Sunday 2018
At the midpoint of Lent we recall the greatest gift God has given after the Redemptive Incarnation – the Holy Eucharist.  The Gospel tells how Our Lord prepared the people for this Sacrament by the miracle of the loaves and fishes.  By reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ we are given the foretaste of heaven and so every Holy Communion is a preparation for our entrance there.

Confession, Contrition, Satisfaction

2nd Sunday in Lent 2018
During Lent it is important to stir up sorrow for our sins and to receive the Sacrament of Penance.  The older form for the penitent to use in the confessional expressed aspects of this beautiful sacrament that we should appreciate.  If received well,  this sacrament can even make us holier than just before we sinned, for example we have St. Peter.  The Gospel for this Sunday is about the Transfiguration and is meant to encourage us, as it did the Apostles, for the struggles we must face in the days ahead.

The Gift Of Lent

First Sunday in Lent 2018
Grace is present at every moment for us but especially during Lent.  We, as Christians, must not be a scandal to those in the world.  Lent is our retreat and it is dangerous to our spiritual life not to realize this.  The virtue of chastity cannot be practiced without constant help from grace.  We need the sacraments, prayer and spiritual reading to be holy.  Christ was tempted in three ways which are conquered by our penances of fasting, prayer and almsgiving.  Remembering the four last things will help save us.

God Will Hear Us

Ash Wednesday 2018
In 1741 the pope declared that Lent is the true sign of the Christian fighting for his salvation by means of penance through fasting which is understood by the receiving of the sacramental of ashes today.  The entire Septuagesima season focused our attention on sin and our identifying the predominant fault we want to eradicate now.  We begin our forty days of prayers, almsgiving and fasting with confidence that God will hear our plea and forgive us as He did with the Ninivites at the preaching of the prophet Jonas.
